OT: webcam extension

I need to set up a simple webcam (Logitech HD C615) with a laptop.? Webcam will sit above projection screen and laptop will be at the back of?a small conference room.? Total wire run is about 45 feet.? Is there a known reliable Cat5 balun system (or any other extender)?to do this??

Logitech warns that they don't support any 3rd party extenders but that some may work.

Thanks.

We have had luck with the **tron USB transceivers with Logitech cams

SFP

The distance is ok for a long usb cable when considering the data pair, but the power pair is probably too small. ?I did some SmartBoard extensions a while ago using cat5 with one pair for data and 2 pairs for power, about 50 feet by the time they were plugged in on both ends, and the SmartBoards worked just like they were using the short cable. ?I had to look up where to buy USB connecters and boots and solder them up myself but they worked out great. ? If you want to use an extender B&B Electronics is a great vendor for that sort of stuff - industrial strength-.

IO Gear and Icron both produce good quality USB over CAT5 extender products, the Icron products are powered at both ends and provide a very fast and stable USB 2.0 connection up to 100 meters.

One thing to keep in mind if you are flirting with the limits of distances with USB extenders is that the 3?or 6 foot (or longer) USB cables at both ends of the extended USB connection MUST be added to the total length so a 45 foot CAT5 cable with a standard 6 foot USB cable at each end makes a total of 58 feet.

?

Also be advised that?each physical connection (PC USB to USB extender and CAT5 to USB extender to USB device, so a total of 6 connections) introduces a 3 db drop in data signal strength and the initial connction USB handshake is only about 100 microseconds long so a low performance CAT5 extender may result in the USB devices failing to connect, requiring multiple unplugs and replugs before the USB periperal device "speaks" properly to the host device.

?

I have found the Icron USB Ranger line of products to ve very stable and robust.
