New Programmer

If you can afford it, buy an RMC3. If not, get a QM-RMC off of ebay (should be able to get one for under $50). You can do almost all of the entry level Smart Graphics stuff with it on an Xpanel or via the iPad/Android app. ?

I dont think anyone would be "crazy" to learn on discontinued equipment.? I work on discontinued equipment all the time,? Stuff we havent even finished installing yet is discontinued before its signed off. Its crazy how fast things come out and then are gone. You can always learn the basics on older equipment...Not to mention that if you are in the business, many customers will call looking for work to be done on their discontinued hardware.? I have jobs that i need to start now that still use quickmedia.? Even if the system isnt ethernet, you can learn alot about relays, making IR files, serial control.? very important basics that you will always need in your tool belt.

The programming fundamentals are identical between a 2 series and a 3 series. ?Sure they both have their own quirks and nuances but theres absolutely no reason one cannot learn Crestron programming on a 2 series processor. ?

You can pick up a Pro2 on eBay dirt cheap and running the latest fw you can do most SG programming. As I discovered on labs recently the only thing you can use are the Media players as these require s#. Don't forget to make sure your Pro2 has an ENET card fitted.

I would recommend starting with an MP2E.? Cheap as dirt, has ethernet, has audio, does some video switching.? I see an auction on ebay right now for $45.? Can't beat that to learn almost all of the basics in one box.? With xPanel you can do smart graphics and you get the bonus of learning how Crestron deals with audio levels and A/V switching.? IIRC programming an MP2E to switch is exactly like programming a DM switch.? At that price buy 2 and learn EISC too.

Pretty ideal.

Thanks to all who posted on this, some useful tips that I will follow up.
