New member looking for some guidance...

Hello all!
?
First off, thanks for accepting me as a member here.
?
I'm a relatively new Crestron user/owner.? I acquired a LOT of MD8x8 switchers, DMPS-300-C, and a slew of RMC's/TX's a number of years ago.? Haven't done anything serious with any of it until recently.
?
I was using the DM8x8's just to switch my video manually in my home lab setup through the front panel.? Ultimate goal is to setup my home lab to basically be a KVM switch for my computers and various electronic repair equipment to do video streaming of my repair jobs.? I'm trying to start up a small vintage electronic repair business out of my home. I left the IT community a decade ago to help my parents in their final years, and now I have zero desire to go back to corporate IT, but I do have plenty of IT networking experience. I'm going back to my roots of electronics repair and vintage computer systems, with emphasis on industrial gear and the unusual.
?
Fun back story; I first got introduced to Crestron gear in the early 2000's. I was assigned to do a network redesign for our CEO new home office, who had purchased Glen Campbell's old house (yes, the country singer). When I got there, they had a complete home office installation of Crestron gear (four full height racks) that I had to integrate into the rest of the network.? So I had to get a little familiar with how it worked.? I was pretty impressed with the level of integration and sophistication that presented to me.? The whole ball of wax, lights, curtains, screens and speakers in the ceiling and floors that automatically opened closed, raised lowered, lights, climate, security cameras, etc.? Seriously was impressive in 2000! That was the fun part, the not fun part was digging a trench between the house and the garage/operations center in 115F weather in Phoenix. None the less, when I had the opportunity to pick up a bunch of Crestron gear a few years ago, I jumped on it.
?
Anyhow, I have a few questions that have been lingering and hoping maybe someone here can help point me in a direction to research some more.
?
I joined because I'm coming to the exhaustion of my searches and due diligence before I ask for help.? I'll follow up with specific questions I have separately.
?
Oh, and speaking of that, I was reading the FAQ, and it referred to a document "CNX cook book" to read before posting questions.? I couldn't find that document, is it possibly called something different, or renamed?? I'd certainly like to read up on it if it's available.
?
Thanks in advance!
?
Cheers,
?

I started out with a CNXSX "Six Pak" and have copy of the "CNX Cook Book" by David Webster. Before I upload it, can the moderator tell me if that is ok to do? I don't want to violate a copyright or Crestron rule.

Hello Dano!
Welcome to our crazy world!!?
1. Though the CookBook is truly ancient, the cool part is that much of the programming (SimplWindows, Simpl+) info in that doc is still relevant in many ways...But it is voluminous and certainly based on its vintage will not help with IP related stuff. But still would be good for logic and basic programming architecture understanding...? ? I haven't even heard someone mention that in 20 years!! So thanks for bringing us back to some good memories!!? ?Perhaps the Admins might know where to find it...
2. If you're only looking to learn how to program Crestron for yourself and your home Lab, it will likely be a fair amount of time/work to get things going. As with any complex environment, there are many subtleties and 'Tribal Knowledge' that will add to the lift.? That said, having programmed Crestron for over 30 years, It's actually really fun!
3. Your primary challenge is getting the software to work with and access to firmware, etc. You may want to find a local small Crestron dealer to see if you can work with them. I have had clients that wanted and were capable to programm their own systems and we created a nice, long-term working relationship...
?
HTH,
Chris K...:)

Sure, feel free to upload it. I actually thought it was already in the Files section.

However, as Chris mentioned, it's over 20 years old and some of its information is no longer relevant. It also doesn't touch on newer technologies. Still a good read, though.
