CRESTRON CONSTRUCT first impressions

If anyone have feedback please share! Curious to see if it's working well.

Causes a JAVA script error at first run, hit OK, then splash screen shows up, which needs to be ended via task manager.

Too busy to figure it out right now (maybe reinstall or Java update?) -? something on my list to look at next week.

first impressions ...

1. most important it brought the news that it can be done a gui designer as vtpro to html5?
2. the license for html5 will be gone shortly, then i will go back to using it because until now i did not use web for last 2 years and css&html5 too time-consuming like smpl# for my line of work.
3. u can import vtpro file ....that is a big plus very close to the way we did old file change before cgd.
for ths construct it self its still work in progress:
1.list still dont work as vtpro .
2.the import is still need alot of work .
3.text entry dont work as good as before .
4.on tsw 760 the gui looks like u have a scroll bar and no matter what resolution i choose nothing seem to help .
5.no images or theme - u need to import all from vtpro theme .
6.it very heavy? and slugsh - remind me the studio
7. compile time very very long .
8.sometimes the gui on the web does not update and u get button on buttons and then you need to zoom in and out to fix .
7.gauge dont work as smooth as vtpro

that some of my first impressions?
i most excited no more license

Out of curiosity I imported a recent TSW-770 project.
Well, I won't be using it to modify existing projects that's for sure.
Some quick observations:
* Animation object style changed from ring to spinner
* Animation object size changed
* Rectangular gauges changed to rounded rectangle
* Rectangular Advanced buttons changed to rounded rectangular
* Imported project did not respect hidden subpages - every subpage is visible - very slow to load

Overall the software is painfully slow on my Dell XPS i7.
Choosing to close the subpage I was looking at I was prompted to save or discard changes. I selected discard and it took about 30s to decide to close the page.
After those initial observations I simply gave up and closed the application.

Hopefully it can only get better, but for now I'll leave it alone.

Yea I tried importing one of our templates which is very graphics heavy and it completely destroyed it. Half of the objects didnt come thru or arent supported yet. We are far away from being able to import existing VT files. Unless maybe you have cookie cutter basic UI projects. No Media Player makes it a non-starter for now for any of our deployments anyway.?

First compile of any project will be slow in Construct while it sets up the build environment.? Second compile should be much snappier.

With the TST-902's being discontinued, it appears that the TST-1080 is the only replacement??(TST-1080 cannot do smart graphics).
I was hoping that there would be more overlapping time between the phasing out of smart-graphics and gradual phase-in of Construct, a tool that cannot *yet* be a one-to-one replacement for VTPro ( or can it?)
?
We have a project with several TSW-1070's and a single TST-1080.? We wanted to stick to smartgraphics for the time being, but the fact that the TST-1080 can only do HTML throws a big wrench at the whole thing.??
Are there any alternatives for a wireless touchpanel that can still do Smart Graphics?

The obvious choice is an iPad in a launch port case. The TST is ridiculously over priced if you ask me, in the UK at least, at more that triple an iPad solution.

I think Construct has the ability to replace VTPro in some use cases, mainly commercial with many important resi essential features still to come.

I remember a big todo being made about how many icons were included for buttons. I went looking and noticed there was no projector icon, I did how ever find a poo storm icon. That seems accurate.?

Yea the icons are quite lacking. Who the hell needs Emoji icons? They really should include icons that miror the Crestron Transports/AV/etc. We use them throughout or projects and I have found many I need missing.?

I think that the big missing piece for Resi is the lack of the MPO at the moment, unless there's been some movement on this...

TBH, we arent even messing around with Construct until there is a viable port over from our current package of interface options.? There needs to be a way to crossover for clients with older systems and clients with new requests.? This whole releasing of panels not capable of running VTPro projects just reeks.

Yep, sales is super excited about the new wireless hotness but they don¡¯t have to try to program it

So agree with you.

I tried to to make one very simple project in Construct... and It is no so easy and so fast than doing it in Vt -pro... no images import.. no themes... you cannot change the differents icons of a Tab Button... netiher the text for each button. I don`t really understand.. It seems not to be finished or maybe misfinished... The idea seems to be good but I think It is not a good tool by the moment..?

For the tab and other similar items you need to select that item and then go to the layer manager. You can now pick which item in that tab/list you?want to work with and adjust the text-icon... A bit painful way of doing it, but you can do it.

The Z-Order changing is what is painful for me. If there is a background image that controls are on, the image tends to float to the top of the stack. Changing to another page and coming back will usually reset the order, but it is a pain while trying to get stuff done. What is worse is that I have seen that happen on a CH5 Webpage and the page needed multiple refreshes for it to draw correctly. I can't imagine putting a customer through that. It's one thing while creating it, but quite another to see at run time.

Ouh mama! Thanks for the tricky way for the tab...Can you give another advice to load a image for the background or image for the buttons or how can i do it without editing CSS.

And another question .. how can I get an XPANEL web with Crestron Construct? If I build the project I don`t know where to find it if It generates it. And the same question for a touch panel. I have seen that if you don`t work with joins you can enable the contract parameter. But for me I was not a problem using joins, I am very used to work with them.

How can you upload the xpanel or the project for a touchpanel compatible with Crestron Construct. I think that there is not much info in Crestron official web.?

I am not yet with you Z-Order pain yet.. but if I continue playing with Crestron Construct for sure that I will get there... bufff

Do you recommend any more tricks or where can I find more useful info?

Many thanks,

Watching the Construct video from last years Masters is probably the easiest way to get a quick grip on how to use Construct vs VTPRO-e. It's available via the Online Help part of the Crestron website.

Many thanks for the info. I `ll try to take a look to them to try to understand Construct better.

But I hope and suppose that VtPro will be with us til Construct will be a better option...

I still remember the crash of the Studio and the System crazy Builder...

Totally agree...! Where are the AV icons???

You can use FontAwesome (), which is way better than AV icons
