CP3 Ethernet Issues

Hi all,

Any ideas why I'd be getting these errors constantly on a CP3? The program only has TCP connections to 2x TSW-750s and a BSS BLU-100, and the BLU code works 100% on other systems.?

FECTimer: Ethernet disabled by watchdog

FECTimer: ETH RX re-enabled by watchdog?

Is it possible for the CP3 to have a bad Ethernet card? I will try a INIT, RESTORE.?

Going this route before pointing fingers at bad network cables or switch.?

Hi Nick,

Even i am facing the same problem now. The CP3 is throwing thousands of error saying ethernet disabled by watchdog. Were you able to find a fix for this?
If anyone else knows about the issue, can you guys please help?

Hi Guys,

Even I facing the same issue in couple of places, the CP3 errlogs is flooded with watchdog errors. I don't know how to resolve this. When I asked help? from the crestron true blue support they just say its the network issue, the network is getting flooded with traffic. I don't think that's the case because the sane issue cannot be happening in all my clients place at the same time.

FECTimer: Exceeded Receive Packet Trip Count, dwRxPacketReceived: 4408 in 1000 milliseconds
FECTimer: Ethernet disabled by watchdog
FECTimer: ETH RX re-enabled by watchdog

It would be great If anyone could help me out in this issue.

Ethernet watchdog is virtually always a network issue, specifically broadcast/multicast storms.

Do you have AVoIP devices (e.g. NVX, Dante, etc. on the same VLAN)? If so make very sure that IGMP, etc. is properly configured on all switches.

?

If I recall correctly the dwRxPacketReceived values indicate that it’s receiving more than 4400 packets per second which is not typical.

?

If you fire up wireshark on a hardwired connection on the same VLAN it should be largely quiescent – some ARPing and other housekeeping traffic at? trickle – if you are seeing a constant stream from one or more IPs/MACs, there’s hard evidence of the problem I’m describing.

Like Lincoln said, you have a network issue that has more traffic than CP3 can handle.?

Usually it is because of a broadcast storm that is caused by a loop in your network.? Common sources of devices that cause network loops if not configured correctly are? , TiVo players with MoCA built in and Sonos systems.? I suspect the same thing can happen with DirecTV systems with an Ethernet bridge installed.? But if you have a DM-NVX in the system and you don't have your Ethernet switch configured correctly, the DM-NVX can flood your other devices with multicast traffic.

Or you may have a loop in your network switches (assuming one or more of them don't support spanning tree protocol).? For example, Switch A has a connection to Switch B and Switch C and there is also a connection between Switch B and Switch C.? When a broadcast packet occurs, it will start traveling in a loop around between Switch A->B->C->A->B->C and so forth forever.? But that same type of loop can occur with other devices such as Sono in the mix that have multiple network adapters.

But I have also seen a failing network switch or a customer device such as a blue ray player fail and flood the network with packets and Wireshark may not show the issue.? In this case, I usually just have to just disconnecting devices until the network starts working again.

Sonos in particular uses an older STP protocol that is incompatible with a lot of network devices.? They will create a loop between Sonos wireless link and the Ethernet connection.? Your best bet with Sonos is to go in all the Sonos devices with an Ethernet connection and disable the WiFi adapter in them.

We saw this issue occur in a system where we had 4 Shure MXA910 Dante ceiling mic arrays and a QSC Core110f DSP.? We had to configure IGMP snooping and multicast forwarding on the managed switch port that the CP3 was connected to or it would shut off the LAN port.

But the thing is, the project was installed long back and the problem started recently. So need to check with the client if any new device was installed which is flooding the network. Is there a possibility that this kinds of error is caused by the SPLUS modules?

In? word, no.

Hopefully you are not exposing your CP3 ports to the Internet.? If you are, those error are likely being cause by someone overseas hammering your CP3 in an attempt to break in.

If not and no network changes have occurred, then there may be an equipment failure or worst yet someone has hacked into your client and is flooding your network with packets in an attempt to make it reveal it's secrets.

I've been battling this issue intermittently with a site for the last few months also...
After a CP3 reboot, things are stable for some period of time (sometimes for months), then the system will grind to a halt.
we don't seem to see general network issues, just issues with the rack equipment which has its own switch and the TSWs with are served from the main network switch...
When I see the issue I also have the same stuff in the logs:

? ?FECTimer: Exceeded Receive Packet Trip Count, dwRxPacketReceived: 4200 in 1000 milliseconds

? ?FECTimer: Ethernet disabled by watchdog

? ?FECTimer: ETH RX re-enabled by watchdog

No streaming AVoIP stuff. Just one sonos player and DirectTV (Moca, but no ethernet connection), Middle Atlantic RackLink devices, DM8x8, (2) Episode AVRs (IP), x52 series TSWs, Luma NVR, etc.
Program is pretty standard for me, nothing like this at other sites.
NO PORT FORWARDs!!!!

It seems weird that rebooting the CP3 would eliminate the issue, for? days, weeks, and sometimes months if it somehow wasn't related...
Anyone found any more info on this??

Had a similar issue.? In my case, my client would reboot the network to resolve and we wouldn't have any switch logs to review.? Once I got to it before he was able to reboot, the switch log showed that a WATTBOX connection kept going up and down and was flooding the network with traffic.? Once the flood started the WATCHDOG would shut down the ethernet port on my CP3.

What do others think?
Could a bad network connection (RJ45) cause this kind of issue??

Nope, I would bet on some equipment is flooding the network and the cp3 gets affected.?
If this happens in your install “often”, try to sniff the network with wireshark or similar software to see ?if suddenly there are any broadcast storms and maybe you could isolated the ip origin of it.

Check your network switches and recently auto firmware upgrades..?
i’ve a similar issue with a system (cp3, nexia, nvx, unifi switches) that worked perfect 1 year, and suddenly something started to shutdown the tcp connection between the biamp and cp3.

The combination of an auto firmware update happened on the unifi switches, and an out of date firmware version on the nvx caused flooding all over the network.

CP3 firmware issue?? You might try downgrading the firmware to a version from a few years ago and see if that make a difference.? I myself haven't seen this issue -- but for Series 3 devices, I use Crestron firmware/software back before the Series 4 came out.? Particularly now that the Series 3 has been discontinued.? I only use the latest and greatest firmware/software for Series 4 devices.

You also might try putting the CP3 on its own subnet and point all the end points to the new IP address -- that would shield the CP3 from other devices flooding the CP3's network port.? I had an issue back a few years ago with Haiku fans flooding the network with packets and messing up my Series 3 devices.? Landed up putting the Haiku fans on there own subnet to fix the issue.
