Laptop suggestion for Crestron and AMX

Dear all,

I'm looking to buy a new laptop for crestron and AMX programming purpose, I'm wondering which model to choose so please assist in this

Looking for your suggestion?

Thanks
Raj

Raj,

? I am looking for a new Laptop for this purpose as well. ?Did you find something? ?I know that the Crestron Owners Group on LinkedIn has a discussion on this. ?Most folks seem to be going with Microsoft Surface Pros for fieldwork, while a list of others are using Macbook Pros, but have to run some type of Windows emulation to get the software to run.

I am interested to see if you have purchased anything yet, and if others have any recommendations.

You don't need a ton of processing power for Crestron software, other than some programs being single threaded, where core speed will launch apps faster.?

Definitely get a SSD and 8GB RAM is fine.?

I would actually keep to a 1080p display as Crestron programs don't HiDPI scale that well. I end up running my Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro @ 1080p even though it has a QHD+ display.?

Speaking of which, I'm loving my Yoga 2 Pro. It's outdated now but still performs great, and my backpack has never been lighter. You do have to use a USB3 Ethernet dongle but it's no big deal. I bought two of them so I can even do dial NICs, WiFi, and USB Tethered phone (for Internet) all at the same time (Yes, there are situations).?

I'm a big fan of Dell laptops, when purchased direct, and mostly their Latitude, Precision, and XPS lines. Vostro is nice for the price point. Their store-bought is OK but nowhere near the level of support.?

Touch screen is nice for when you run XPANEL for testing... which is partly why I went with the convertible.?

"others are using Macbook Pros, but have to run some type of Windows emulation to get the software to run"

Hmmm...? Many are happy with running a virtual machine - I'm running Bootcamp, which is Windows running right on the hardware - no emulation...? (Seems like a dirty word)

I have an Asus i7 17" laptop. 16 gb ram, 5gb video, SSD ?main with hybrid secondary. Get as much ram as you can, makes a big difference. My desktop has 32gb and compiles much faster than my laptop.?

I'll second the MacBook Pro. I run in both Boot Camp and Parallels running the BootCamp partition. I like being able to run any Mac or PC software I like. Plus, since Mac's are very particular about HDCP, a Mac laptop makes a great test signal generator. I have been called out to several jobs where someone eventually (weeks or months later) brought a Mac to plug into a conference system at it would not work due to HDCP.

Plus they look cool.

I'm using a Lenovo X1 carbon.. performs amazingly! Small display but I do all of my UI work at the office or at home on a larger monitor, then create a Theory of Operations document which the client signs which has drastically reduced the on-site UI work. But when it comes to compiling and such my X1 carbon kills it! I switched from Dell due to price and functionality, I would recommend Lenovo for sure

I've got a Lenovo W550s, 12GB RAM, i7-5600 (2.6GHz) Win10 that I'm really enjoying. ?Love the build quality, keyboard and trackpoint particularly. ?

Switched from over 10 years of Thinkpads to a MacBook Pro with Parallels about a year ago.
No problems and really enjoying it.

Good luck!

1 year post Mac switch and I still am annoyed that I can't Delete or Page Up/Down/Home/End with one hand. Grrrrr

HP Zbook series

I feel your pain.
Most of these I can get with one hand expect for the ones with fn.

Delete is cmd + backspace
home/end is cmd + arrow up/down
page up/down is fn + arrow up/down

Windows usb keyboard. ?Bam!

I use a Surface Pro for everything. Works well for me docked on my desk doing the bulk of programming work, and works well in the field too.

+1 for Lenovo X1 Carbon 1080p

Just the right size/weight (14") for lugging around the jobsite, but you can still do something productive with it while sitting at a table.? 1080p isn't quite high enough for editing TSW1052 panels comfortably, but anything higher, without going to a larger (heavier) screen size, is hard for me to see.

All -?

You don't NEED more than 8GB RAM for Crestron software. I haven't seen 16GB beneficial even in Studio. Speed per core WILL help since SIMPL isn't multithreaded to my knowledge. Core i7 is definitely recommended, but an i5 will do.

DEFINITELY get an SSD, and if you can make it a NVMe (PCI speed, not SATA speed... HUGE difference). Absolutely NO HDDs should be allowed in laptops anymore. Sure you can't get a cheap 1TB SSD, but that's too much data to trust to a laptop or a single HDD in my opinion without redundancy.?

I have a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro I got almost 2 years ago and STILL love it. It's Core i7, 8GB RAM, SSD, QHD+ screen. Unfortunately, I'm running the screen at 1080p because Crestron hasn't implemented any HiDPI work arounds for their outdated software.?

I recently got a Dell Precision 7710 and it's a gorgeous, ridiculous fast system (with Thunderbolt 3), but I won't be carrying this around to jobsites unless I'm parked all day long. That has a UHD screen, but again, can't run Crestron software on it.?
