Denon avr2311 stops answering to rs232 after a while while still obeying

Second time within a few weeks : I go to a customers and he says theres a source he can't switch to..

I'm using the Crestron module for the 3806 or something, customized for the new inputs of the Denon.

Since source selection mutes the receiver for a couple of seconds, I only send the source select command if the active source is different -as reposted by the module.

Here comes the fun : both problems were coming from the same cause : the receiver not sending any feedback anymore. While still being controlled by the serial commands.

On the first job I thought the rx wire was broken or disconnected. Removed the current source check as a quick fix.
But on the second job I had more time to investigate. And it took a power cycle on the Denon to restore proper feedback. Not to standby but with the on/off button.

Ever observed that ?
Since the driver was not designed for that receiver, maybe it keeps sending a wrong command and the receiver eventually gets tired of it ?

Anyway, that's bad.

Seen this before on many sites - yes the Denons sometimes just quit sending feedback, so if you have any logic relying on it, it stops working. I have taken to just controlling it one-way for this reason. A power-cycle brings back the feedback....but for how long?

Yep, I've seen it too. Yes the Denon stops sending feedback and a hard reset is the only fix. Some models exhibited it (namely the 2010 models) and other models do not. The issue appears to be caused by sending commands to the Denon receiver while it is sending info back to you. So in essence, you need to run the Denon in half duplex mode.

Unlike Oliver however, I like to keep the feedback because at least until recent models, every time you send a command, the Denon mutes the audio and video for a few seconds -- very annoying. Using feedback you can send only the commands that are needed.

Two work arounds that seem to have works for me are:

1) Hold up sending commands to the Denon while it is sending stuff and pace the commands rather than send them all at once. Note the Denon sends all types of unsolicited stuff and sending commands during that stuff will lock it up too.

2) Use IR instead for controlling the Denon and use the RS232 for feedback only.

Good luck,
Steve

I like the idea of using IR plus RS232.
