Re: Its time to replace the desktop PC.....
I'm running a 3 year old i5 with 16GB of RAM and an SSD, and typically have the same types of apps all open at once.? This is on Win7-64.
I just did a quick little test with 3 instances of SIMPL, VTP (with 2 panels open), Toolbox, URC, Lutron QS Designer, Photoshop CS5, Visio, Word, Excel, Outlook, iTunes, Steam, Chrome, and Firefox (with 53 tabs). Firefox is the clear memory hog here (53 tabs will do that) with 1.4GB used, followed by iTunes at 900MB.? Overall I'm using 10GB of my 16GB of RAM, and CPU is idling at 4%.? Obviously, it also depends on the size of the projects you have loaded into those applications, and CPU would definitely spike if I tried to compile all 3 instances of SIMPL at the same time, but the point is 16GB has worked well for me, so 32GB should be more than plenty. |

Considering that Crestron's STIRP is TS, I would go with that: On Fri, Jan 22, 2016 at 7:54 AM, crestron_programmer@... [Crestron] <Crestron@...> wrote:

Re: Its time to replace the desktop PC.....
Thanks Dannebtd, All good info. In terms of applications I can often have the following all open at the same time: Simpl (maybe 2 or 3 instances), VTP, Toolbox, Outlook, Word, Excel, D-Tools, Visio, Adobe Pro, Chrome, VOIP phone client, and an X-Panel. If an i5 with 32GB RAM will cope comfortable with all that then I will prioritise getting the fastest processor available. SSD drive will only be used for running local files, not for storage (we have servers and iSCSI units with TBs of storage available) so needs to be fast rather than large. I also intend to run VMWare so that I can have instances of other OS for testing purposes. BTW I never really twigged that VTP was still a 32 bit prog! |
Re: vtproe not loading pages
Please don't take this as a personal attack - and I apologise for the tone of my post. My point was that there have been copious posts on this topic since the issue arose?in late December?(at least three different threads - one?with over 60 posts) and the solution to the issue has been identified, resolved and documented. However well-intentioned, the posts suggesting downgrading?various (often unrelated)?software elements could potentially do more harm than good. |
Re: Its time to replace the desktop PC.....
On the topic of swapping on an i5 instead of the proposed i7; I built a rig last year only to realize that none of the Crestron software is multicore capable. Since the main difference between the i5 and i7 in multithreading and cache it really depends if you are running other programs in the backgrounds (I often run Virtual box so I can have VTP and D3P open at the same time). Depending on the budget I would get the fastest processor you can afford and overclock it, as clock speed is much more important that the extra "cores". However I would only get a 4 core processor . . don't step up to the 6 core beasts as I believe they all require DDR4 Ram + motherboards which dramatically increases the price/performance ratio (in our circumstances) . . .Also, I have 16GB of ram and never come close because VTP is 32bit and can only utilize the 4GB.
With all the small writes during compile i think the biggest performance boost I obtained was in my SSD (I have one of the PCI mounted ones that are substantially faster than conventional 2.4" drives) . . .However the i7 I have also has a larger Cache so it isn't a apples to apples comparison. I picked up the cheapest graphics card that supported 4 monitors I could find on CL . . . some artifacts but works well for me . . $100 well spent. just my 2c |
How do I download from a TouchPanel?
I've been?programming my home system, which includes a Pro2, some tstats, keypads and touchpanels, over the past few years.? It's been a while and I have a few more devices to add. I can't seem to locate the last version of my program, so I'm starting with an earlier one.? I have downloaded the current version of the program from my processor.? Is there a way to download the graphics from my touchpanels so that I can upload them if I make a mistake in my new program? Thanks, CJ |

There used to be a "drop down" list, where one value in a field would show up, but when you clicked it, you'd have a whole list drop down.? It was removed a while ago from Smart Graphics. On Thu, Jan 21, 2016 at 8:42 PM, kgossen@... [Crestron] <Crestron@...> wrote:

I think he may be thinking of something like this:
This is a rudimentary test I made for an expanding list. ________________________________ From: Crestron@... [Crestron@...] Sent: Thursday, January 21, 2016 8:42 PM To: Crestron@...
