June Newsletter
Hello from Val and Jeanne Christensen We are forwarding an email from our stake provide living leader Good info for summer safety! Begin forwarded message: From: Don Rieske <riesked@...> Date: June 1, 2025 at 5:17:43 PM HST To: Tim Crandall <crandalltimk@...>, McKay Matthews <mckaym58@...> Subject: June Newsletter ?The year is progressing¡.by now, many of you are beginning to see the fruits of your planted garden supply. We have tasted herbs, cilantro, onions, and lettuce. Kinda nice to see Mother Nature respond with taste and color that are a welcomed addition to our fresh vegetable dining addition. More to come and we can¡¯t wait for real tomatoes. We seemed to have averted some major market and supply issues. Other than prices continuing to escalate, supply seems to be adequate. Store shelves are pretty well stocked¡¡thank you!! With summer travel and vacations, some words of preparation need to be considered. Plan with purpose¡.try to consider potential disruptions and changes that you may have to deal with. Have alternate ideas and how they could be accomplished. Flying? Make sure you plan with extra time. Be ready with the new ¡°Official¡± ID and consider including your passport for backup. Remember that if these are stolen it is going to be tough to recover. Take time to picture all of your documents and cards in purse/wallet. Pretty tough to go by memory. Vehicle ready? Stay on the top of the fuel/electric supply. Have your vehicle checked for readiness and carry essential equipment. (See attached mobile ready bags) This may be a good time to have travel insurance and roadside assistance. (AAA) If you drive, try to be courteous and forget stupid errors that others will make. Drive ahead enough to see and anticipate challenges. (Seri?) Have your insurance up-to-date with expected coverage and copies with you. Meds are critical¡.your health may depend on these and if you don¡¯t have the supply, loss of time and possible not replaceable. Security¡try to travel in pairs. Watch surroundings. Have an out ready incase things get uncomfortable. Have layers of defense action in mind. What if?? Be careful of being too vocal with what you have or where you¡¯re going. Don¡¯t be too loud. Remember to drop or leave your valuables if things get ugly. They can be replaced. Don¡¯t advertise your valuables. Have a second ID and credit card stashed in an unlikely location. Money belt can help. Remember those ID pictures? Now is when they come in handy, so a separate location. Consider that your cell phone can also be a target, so hard copy your documents. Accident/illness? Use those in the know¡.it may require a call back home for help, so have contact names and numbers. Lodging¡. Is the property clean and well maintained? Enter the elevator with a visual of the inside. Enter your room cautiously being ready to leave. With electronic keys, access takes only a computer. Use the deadbolt and security latch. Consider using the guest safe. Do you have a smoke alarm and is the light indicating active? Where is your nearest FIRE extinguisher(P.A.S.S.) Understand and know what is your exit? Disabled? Plan for your needs. Consider a small motion activated light for night time safety. Use the peep/observer hole to assess who might be knocking. Be ready and protective of children and grand children. STAY CALM AND IN CONTROL¡.. There are many things to consider and circumstance you may have, so think ahead. Get a good night¡¯s sleep before departure. Don¡¯t forget that prayer¡.. PMA!! And leave with a Positive, Mental, Attitude. Enjoy your upcoming time to have a great vacation!!! Don & Leah Rieske Cascade Stake

Tree Rose taken

Free tree rose
Last week, I had what I thought was a shrub rose planted in my front yard. I didn't actually look at it before it was planted. I bought it from snapshots. Turns out it is a tree rose. It's between the window boxes at the front of the house. It is a beautiful rose, red with a yellow center. It's called ketchup and mustard. If anyone wants a tree rose, come dig it up and take it. Leave the hole and I will replace it with a shrub rose. Cheers. Kay Balmforth

GROW THE FLOW Dear Susan, Great Salt Lake Needs Water¡ªNot Berms As dust storms from Great Salt Lake¡¯s exposed lakebed sweep across the valley, a Utah lawmaker is proposing a quick fix: build berms to trap water, form a crust, then release the water back into the lake. But this bandaid fix risks disrupting the lake¡¯s fragile ecology¡ªand ignores the root of the crisis. Great Salt Lake doesn¡¯t need geoengineering¡ªit needs water. Until we restore natural flows and reduce upstream diversions, no engineered solution will stop the lake¡¯s ongoing collapse. Read more here! Ben Abbott on RadioWest Our Executive Director, Dr. Ben Abbott, joined KUER¡¯s RadioWest to talk about the urgent need for action to save Great Salt Lake. The episode, ¡°Great Salt Lake and the Politics of Patience,¡± dives into why waiting is no longer an option¡ªand what it will take to restore the lake. Airs on KUER 90.1: May 21 at 9 a.m. & 7 p.m., and May 24 at 11 a.m. Check it out! Birdwatch at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge Join Grow the Flow and the Youth Coalition for Great Salt Lake for a day of birdwatching at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge! Whether you¡¯re a bird-nerd or just interested in learning more about this world-renowned ecosystem, this is the perfect trip for students to immerse themselves in the Lake¡¯s wetlands. Great Salt Lake is home to millions of migratory birds, who rely on the lake to rest, breed, and refuel. Late spring is the perfect time to explore the many wetland areas the birds call home! As the lake shrinks so does the habitat countless species rely on, putting their futures at risk. We are likely to see avocets, stilts, grebes, blackbirds, raptors, cranes, and baby birds exploring their new home for the first time. FREE Lunch, transportation, binoculars, and bird-books will be provided by Grow the Flow and the Refuge.
