C-Car Project for Engineering class - looking for help

Recently our engineering class was asked by the local small town museum to diagnose and possibly get running a 1980 Commutacar that has been sitting in a barn for a couple decades.? We have had it a couple days now and have been trying to figure out what all of the rusty parts are inside.? I have a ton of pictures and my class would greatly appreciate anyone who would want to share their knowledge about reviving one of these guys.

The original control system was very simple.
A three-switch go pedal.

At rest, the 48v of batteries are wired in series parallel to 24 volts.
The first relay closes the circuit but through a big resistor for a
smooth start.
The second click shorts out the resistor for 24volt operation and then
the 3rd click un-parallels the batteries to give 48v to the motor.
(Mine was a 36 volt motor).

Justin,

Sounds like a great project! I would recommend that, in addition to this list, you connect with the group “C-cars” on Facebook. It’s more active, though stay here, as well, as some folks here don’t have FB.

you can download the oswners manual here:

That manual has a ton of good information.? I think we have some community members who are willing to invest to buy new parts that we need.? The batteries are definitely bad but I haven't been able to test the motor yet.

Show us pics as the project goes through it's paces...

I had one and until I got all the batteries to make it run,
I would someitimes just use jumper cables from a 12v
battery directly to the motor to move it around the driveway.

Also, since my commune was short and I did not need the original
full range and because EIGHT 6 volt trojan batteries are not only
expensive but very heavy, I just ran mine on four 12 vold deep cycle
batteries at much less cost.

The overamperage from the 12v batteries will reduce their life also,
but it quickly got the car going for my uses at lower cost.
