Re: Troubleshooting Brush details, no run
? ?? Hi Mark and All, ? ? ? ? ?? Likely both.? It's not hard to take the motor off? and take it apart making it much easier and you can check, service? the commutator too.? Better to run in the brushes while off too.? It's what I did. ? ? ? ? ? If you do the bearings are cheap and easy to do a full rebuild in 30 minutes or so. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Jerry Dycus

Excellent info.? I'll look at the contactor and brushes this weekend.? Can you get to the brushes from the top of the car in the battery compartment under the seat, or from underneath the car? Thanks, Mark

Re: Troubleshooting Brush details, no run
? Hi Mark and All, ? ? ? ? ?? These are GE motors mostly that are very common and any motor shop , etc that sells parts, especially forklift ones,? will likely have them, the brush holder in stock. ?? I replaced my brushes and brush holder, about $100 by now I'd guess, and never had another problem with it putting on 1,000s of miles since. ? But only if you actually need it. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? On the brushes the copper? leads tend to go first after 15-20 yrs depending on how damp mostly, and pop like fuses. ? And only $30 a set or so, smart to replace them all? if one goes.? Keep the others for emergency spares. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Just have the model number on the tag/label or the old ones for them to look up.? A lot of times you just have to work them up and down. ?? ? ? ? ? ? ? Find the thinnest thing like a razorblade knife, feeler gauge and slide it between the holder and brush to break it loose if needed.? They from condensation tend to corrode slightly together if not moved every 3-6 months.? So when not running, push it a few feet very 3 months or so. ? ? ? ? ?? And make sure you run them in for a couple hours on 12vdc or so while on jacks.? Jump your lower 12vdc of the pack, as or afterward recharge them to match the other battery voltages.? Or a 12 battery. ? ? ? ? ? ? ?? Jerry Dycus

Re: Troubleshooting no run
I just want to mention, that on my 77... It was not wired like that.? Key on would close the S/p contact. Footswitch position 1 in forward or reverse would close the f/r contacts, so long as the charger was unplugged and ebrake off.?

Easy to tell if it is the forward or reverse. You should hear the contractor clunk back and forth when you flip the switch. Do you have the orginal micro switches for the foot pedal?

If you heard the key on clunk ( series parallel) i suspect the footswitch set or the fnr switch.?

Re: Troubleshooting no run
? ? ? ? ?? Hi Mark and All, ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? First jack up the rear so the wheels are off the ground in case it starts up as easily possible.? Only then can you safely check it out, not before. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Other things to look for are bad contacts in the contactors either speed or reversing.? They can have a tiny piece of carbon, etc? holding them apart. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Another might be a stuck motor brushes or contactor solenoid if been sitting. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?? Do you have a fuse? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?? Jerry Dycus

Re: Parking brake
hay its cb in fl i use a power parking brake in my cars push a button and it sets the brake by 12 volts press the button a 2nd time and it lets the brakes go no fus and no busted chin -----Original Message----- From: mark.barbour@... I know that nut exactly.? with the brake off how tight should those cables be?? I imagine pretty snug so when you pull up the emergency brake it pulls the levers in the rear brake, and the rear brake shoes have to be adjusted so that the wheel is moving without any friction, but not by very much?
|
Re: Parking brake
I don't know, but I adjusted it so it was pretty tight. I just adjusted it, applied the brake and tested it, and then adjusted it as needed. As for adjusting the drum brakes: I adjusted mine till the wheels wouldn't spin more than a turn with a good spin by hand, as recommended by someone else on the forums. That's probably a little tighter than they should be, but the brake pads will wear smooth after a bit of driving, and I'd rather have brakes that are too tight than ones that don't work. - Jacob Field 1980 Gold ComutaCar

Re: Parking brake
You've probably already seen this, but there's a little nut on a threaded rod that attaches to the brake cables running to the back of the car (it's located under the front floor panels in the middle, should be easy to spot). To get mine working (well enough that I trust them on a slight incline) I tightened that a bunch.? - Jacob Field 1980 Gold ComutaCar @explosive_golfcart

Re: Parking brake
For mine to work right, everything had to be really smooth operating, and most importantly the rear brakes adjusted well. There is not enough leverage in the design, and I really have to mean it when I set it, while pushing the brake pedal. I snapped my front cable once setting it, which results in punching yourself.? I've not done the modification of the lever, but it makes sense to move the cable further out on the lever underneath the car to gain leverage. I've read here that has been done successfully.?
