On 250428 KQ4PSZ/U @ K%DAT[D[D[D[D5[C[C[C-1.SHW.WI.USA zip ? KQ4PSZ ?
Looks like a new user KQ4PSZ connected to my BBS over HF 300b and entered strange stuff into the user record. Also it appears that new users are still getting prompted for their name and home BBS even though I have the above checked in the configuration section. I can't say that with 100% certainty, though. I make no promises to catch this sort of thing before the next WP update is sent out. 73, Lee K5DAT On Fri, May 2, 2025 at 5:25?AM Chuck Gelm via <nc8q-aredn=[email protected]> wrote: I have configured my BBS to not process 'WP Updates' containing |
Everyone does, of course, have the option to simply not send WP Updates automatically, or even at all.? I question the usefullness of them anyway, to anyone other than yourself.? However, if you have other BPQ nodes that are connected to you ony then you are their only source for WP Updates, and you will want to send them occasionally.? But, BPQ will work fine without sending or receiving the updates.
?
Personally, because I do have a couple of nodes that rely on me for their only AXIP connection I do manually send WP Updates after I do a cursory scan for bad entries.? Usually those with obviously dictionary words instead of call signs.? I don't get them all, but it helps.? I don't bother opening all WP Update messages looking for bad entries.? I might for a while just for the entertainment value.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI was under the impression that the WP had more clout in that any entry that is incorrect will affect mail forwarding. If someone does a SP ww2bsa from their system and my info is incorrect in their resident WP file, does that not affect the outcome of the forwarding? ie: I don't get my mail. Curiously for the longest time I was receiving around 10+ wp updates daily from AXIP connected nodes and was auto sending wp's in return to each of those. Over the last 6 months or so the nodes sending wp's to me has dwindled to only 1. I therefore removed sending to all but the one that is still sending to me.
Although there was no notification to me that the other node were stopping the auto send of their wp updates I can only guess that my node must have passed along some erroneous wp's like the one in the example. If that is the case I would have appreciated a heads up with details for why the wp were no longer to be sent. Flame me if you wish I seem to make that happen often enough but I happen to disagree with Mark that a few occasional bad wp's should mean that the function should be disabled. I find wp's useful especially for looking up the BBS HA for someone that is not defined as a user on my node. Yes this information can be acquired by poking around in other connected nodes but it needn't be that difficult to hunt down a BBS HA. To each their own... if the capability is there use it... or not. 73 de Rich WA3WLH |

What it really affects is your local users.? If do not know how to find the full HA, and rely on your WP to finish the address for them they will get a bad address.
?
What this meacs is that we do need to be vigilant about the WP we receive, but also those that we send.? That is why my BBS does not send them automatically.? I manually send them about once a week.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýOk, yes, I noticed that. If I just enter the call of my recipient, Bpq will come back with the full address in my WP and I can see if it is wrong. But, to play devil's advocate, what if I don't know the full address of my? recipient? Then I'm relying on the accuracy of my resident WP file - good or bad. I believe that if any addition, deletion or edit is made to a call, the WP file should should be populated - manually or automatically - throughout all supporting systems so that everybody has the same data and is on the same page (no pun intended lol).? All sysops are free to use whatever procedure they want when sending updates.
