Kenwood TS-480 BPQ32 and VARA HF configuration help
I have a Kenwood TS-480.? I purchased the CAT control cable and the PC see it as COM3.? I am using a USB dongle CM108 for the sound, I do received sound fine.
This is my config pretty sure is missing key elements to make VARA HF transmit.? The Win10 PC has the last version of Hamlib installed.? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Heber ;------------------------------------------- ?VARA HF PORT ------------------------------------- PORT ?ID=VARA ?PORTNUM=5 ?DRIVER=VARA ?CONFIG ?ADDR 127.0.0.1 8303 PTT COM3 PATH C:\VARA\VARA.exe ?BW500 ENDPORT |
Hello Heber, I had VARA working at one time with a CM108 sound dongle. I used PTT CM108 in BPQ (see below). Also in the PTT settings in VARA HF I selected "RA Board". I believe "RA Board" refers to the Masters Communications "DRA" devices, which use CM108 and/or equivalent. 73, Lee K5DAT On Wed, Jul 10, 2024 at 7:32?PM Heber Soto, NP4JN via <np4jn=[email protected]> wrote: I have a Kenwood TS-480.? Hi Heber,
Are you using a CM108-based DRA-30 or other DRA dongle?? Or is it a basic CM108 dongle modified to use its onboard pin for PTT?? If it hasn't been modded to use the onboard pin, then try adding: RIGCONTROL ?HAMLIB 127.0.0.1:4532 **** to your BPQ's VARA HF port config after your "BW500"? line.? You'll need to have Hamlib configured for your TS-480 and running first, before starting BPQ. |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHeber,You can't specify the PTT com port in the ADDR line. I has to be defined in a RADIO or RIGCONTROL statement. See the documentation for details. But as VARA can also do PTT, unless at some point you will want to add other modems on the same radio it would be easier to do what Lee suggests and let VARA control PTT. You should then remove the PTT COM3 from the ADDR line. 73, John On 11/07/2024 01:32, Heber Soto, NP4JN

Hi Heber, You can disregard the info in my previous post. I assumed by mentioning CM108 that you were using the GPIO pin in the CM108 for PTT, but later you clarified that it was not the case. Thanks, Lee K5DAT On Wed, Jul 10, 2024 at 10:19?PM Lee D Bengston <kilo5dat@...> wrote:

Yes, but specify the COM port in VARA as opposed to "DRA Board" as I had suggested. 73, Lee K5DAT |
Your menu is missing the PTT option.? I have seen that option missing before on my copy - usually when I first start the program, but then it eventually appears. 73. Lee K5DAT On Thu, Jul 11, 2024 at 3:28?PM Heber Soto, NP4JN via <np4jn=[email protected]> wrote:

I contacted Jose, the author of Vara HF.
He says that when Vara detects Winlink, BPQ, VaraAC etc the com port option would disappear. The com port option in Vara HF would be available if we are connecting only via a KISS application. This means I would have to control PTT from BPQ. So let me change settings in BPQ and start testing. |
So continuing this thread.

I did find out I need a serial to USB Cat cable for the Kenwood TS-480, it was purchased and installed.
?
I am able to make WSTJ-X work with FT8 with FLRIG CAT for PTT and changing frequencies. I am using the USB dongle Sound Card only for TX/RX audio no PTT since there is no external port for PTT on back of the radio.
?
I want to use VARA HF for this radio, this is configuration I am using but is not working:
?
PORT
?ID=VARA
?PORTNUM=5 ?DRIVER=VARA ?CONFIG ? ADDR 127.0.0.1 8303 PATH C:\VARA\VARA.exe ?BW500 ?RIGCONTROL ? FLRIG 127.0.0.1:12345 ?**** ENDPORT
?
Any assistance is appreciated.

This is my current config, FLRIG its controlling PTT directly without any issue but BPQ/VARA will not activate PTT.
?
PORT
?ID=VARA ?PORTNUM=5 ?DRIVER=VARA ?CONFIG ? RADIO 5 FLRIG 127.0.0.1:12345 ? ADDR 127.0.0.1 8303 PTT FLRIG PATH C:\VARA\VARA.exe ?BW500 ENDPORT
?
Still no lock, I think its BPQ who should be the one to activate the PTT not VARA.

Try this...
?
PORT
?ID=VARA ?PORTNUM=5 ?DRIVER=VARA ?CONFIG ? ADDR 127.0.0.1 8303 PATH C:\VARA\VARA.exe ? RADIO 1 FLRIG 127.0.0.1:12345
?BW500 ENDPORT ?
Once BPQ and Vara TNC have started, on the Vara TNC clisk Settings, Soundcard.? Make sure the sound devices are correctly selected. Click Tune. If the radio keys then the configuration will work (for PTT) and you will need to click Tune again to stop PTT.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI think it should be PTT CAT not PTT FLRIG73, John On 24/10/2024 17:22, Heber Soto, NP4JN

Performed the changes but still BPQ cant control PTT.
?
I think this is a problem on my configuration for BPQ32 or BPQ32 cant handle this radio with FLRIG version 2.0.05.
?
I know Vara is not the control of PTT it would relay on BPQ for that operation.
?
PTT is control via FLRIG without any problem and I know all cables are working good since with WSTJX I did achieve FT8 communication with other stations.
?
Is any one using the Kenwood TS-480 radio with BPQ32?
?

Thanks Jouko, I am seeing progress with your recommendations.

This is the configuration which now PTT is working from BPQ but it looks like the audio from the PC is not being transmitted by the radio:
?
;------------------------------------------- ?VARA HF PORT -------------------------------------
PORT
?ID=VARA ?PORTNUM=5 ?DRIVER=VARA ?CONFIG ?ADDR 127.0.0.1 8303 PTT CAT PATH C:\VARA\VARA.exe ?RIGCONTROL
? COM3 19200 KENWOOD TS480 ? 10.1476,USB ?*** ENDPORT
?
Like I mention before sound card and all cables have been tested with WSTJ-X succefully.
