UK meteor scatter system and Wind profiling radar
17
Slightly off-topic, but this may be of general interest. I recently performed a bit more investigation, regarding the UK meteor scatter system and Wind profiling radar that operate around 46MHz. I wrote to the meteor scatter system operating company, and received a lot of useful information. The site I originally found many years ago in Oxfordshire, no longer exists, and despite me thinking it was still operating somewhere in the area, it is not. The Meteor Burst radio networks are now considered to be legacy systems. They hold three frequencies for use of Meteor Burst: 46.400MHz 46.950MHz 49.750MHz A station at Stanmore, North of London, was the main master station from 1988 to 2014 and broadcast on 46.975 and 46.4, however this station was decommissioned in 2014. There are only two Meteor Master Stations still remaining in the UK: Bacton, Norfolk - Master station. This operates on 46.975 / 46.95 and has antennae which are orientated NE to cover the Southern North Sea. This is most likely the station which is being picked up in Europe. The antennae are vertical 3 element Yagis I think this is the tower with the antennas as seen on Google Streetview. https://maps.app.goo.gl/SGgwekdBuyp6RNKX8 Waltham on the Wolds, Leicestershire - This operates on 46.4 but is defunct. The transmitter is still operating, but there are no outstations currently reporting in. The antennae are orientated NW and SW and are vertically orientated 3 element Yagis. I think this is the tower with two views of the separate antennas as seen on Google Streetview. https://maps.app.goo.gl/WegfVNLQA696ZW6Z7 https://maps.app.goo.gl/D1PK7RwyDFtBMDuY9 Basically the master station polls on 46.975 generally at 30mS or so, the outstations respond on 46.950 when they have something to say. The master stations are transmitting at 500W whilst the outstations are only 100W. I also checked the University of Wales website, and the 46.5MHz (46.4 & 46.95MHz) MST radar near Aberystwyth seems to have been switched off sometime in 2024. https://mst.nerc.ac.uk/ I wonder what they intend to do with the antenna system ? Regards, Martin

Meteor project update
In case it's of interest I'm giving an update on the project this evening for the RSGB Tonight@Eight Webinar. See https://rsgb.org/main/tonight-at-eight-live-webinars/ for the live session. It will be available on YouTube later. Brian

Signal
Hello folks, I am new to the hobby and have recently been using one of my antennae to observe the sky illuminated by the GB3MBA meteor beacon signal at 50.408 Mhz. Whilst engaged in this activity, I have also noticed a permanent, quite strong radio signal that is present at 50.332 Mhz. I am in Newton Stewart, Dumfries & Galloway, and I wondered if anyone on this forum could through any light on what this may be. Best wishes, Nigel

Meteor Echo of the day
This image shows two echoes seen at the Norman Lockyer Observatory and at the NW Hampshire location with Horizontal polarisation. The second, upper, echo although rather feint at NW Hampshire has distinctly different Dopper shifts as observed from the two locations. ~+15Hz at NLO and -~-5Hz as observed from NW Hampshire. This provides some insight into how meteor locations and trajectories might be triangulated using radio using established Bi-static radar techniques. The data displayed on the live streams is not have sufficient resolution or precision to take this ambition very far but the data being streamed to the project server has much higher resolution and precision and includes the necessary timing data which may make this possible. The big question is... will we ever be able to get observations of the same echo from a sufficient number locations, with sufficiently diverse reflection geometry to make this possible ?

GB3MBA UK Meteor Radar Project Face Book group
Hi All Just to let you know that there is also now a Face Book group in support of discussion and information sharing for the GB3MBA UK Meteor Radar Project . Now to be clear it is not designed to detract from the very useful and helpful discussions on here it is just an addition that is designed to extend our reach and interaction. I realise Face Book is a love hate thing so please just treat this as information and an option. https://www.facebook.com/groups/httpsukmeteorbeacon.orghome Kind Regards Mark

Meteor Echo of the day
2
There are so many interesting echoes it's hard to choose the best. Why don't you have a go. Take a snapshot of the display at https://ukmeteorbeacon.org/beaconclient/ IN this screenshot the "Test Stream" is from a receiver at the NW Hampshire location beaming vertically up with the antenna "end on" to the beacon.

Magnetometer traces August 2024
I have put a number of my traces from August 2024 on this URL = https://www.astronomy.me.uk/lro-magnetometer-traces-august-2024 Please could you take a look and let me know what you think. Strangely the dip seems to occur roughly same time each day which suggests to me it is terrestrial rather than due to solar activity ¨C but I don¡¯t really understand what I am looking at. Andy

HAARP Transmission Notice for August 2024 Attachment
and, here is the attachment.... -- Whitham D. Reeve Anchorage, Alaska USA ---

HAARP Transmission Notice for August 2024
The attached transmission notice is based on the schedule that was finalized this morning. However, as explained in the notice, changes are possible due to changing ionospheric and geomagnetic conditions. Also, many short experiments involve LEO satellites, which have variable orbits due to atmospheric drag. The associated HAARP experiments may shift in time to accommodate those variations based on orbit calculations at the last minute. Note that the notice actually covers two campaigns - The Polar Aeronomy & Radio Science (PARS) Summer School through16 August and then a "limited" campaign on 18-20 August. The notice includes supplementary information that may help you detect and identify the HAARP transmissions. Please contract me off-list if you have specific questions. Whit -- Whitham D. Reeve Anchorage, Alaska USA ---

Perseids
2
There are many interesting echoes this morning. With the high definition displays at https://ukmeteorbeacon.org/beaconclient/ note the strange shapes of the echoes, how they differ when viewed from different locations and with different linear polarisations. While the Perseids shower continues I will try to live stream to https://batc.org.uk/live/gb3mba as much as possible. This stream includes sound but having a greater bandwidth than the 6 receiver display doesn't show the same detail. Brian
