Re: RSGB Convention 11-13/10/2024

Lest anyone is interested to know what talks I am currently offering, here is my description of options below - I have discovered that I need some a description to send out to clubs!

Options for talks as below – please let me know which one you prefer = each can be from 40-60 minutes in length, as needed by the audience – it is important that I am given notice if children under 16 are likely to be present, so that I can include age-relevant content to suit their needs as well as rest of the audience.

Talks are designed to suit a range of audience members’ knowledge and experience, from basic to reasonably advanced, with the intention of presenting something to interest everyone. However, if an audience is of a single knowledge/skill level, then please let me know so that I can ensure the talk matches that group’s needs as closely as possible.

Andy

?

Radioastronomy talks

?

*Introduction to radio astronomy for amateur astronomers*

*Mapping the Milky Way at 1420MHz hydrogen radio line, and how to do this at home* - this was talk given at International Astronomy Show and which is also being given at the Radio Society of Great Britain Convention on 13 October 2024.

*How to record meteors by radio meteor scatter and measure the exact peaks of meteor showers*

*Solar flares and sudden ionospheric disturbances*

*Detecting cosmic muons in your own house* - this was talk given at Astrofest 2024 in Kensington, London.

*Introduction to spectroscopy for amateur astronomers*

*3-D printing your own spectrometer and spectrohelioscope at home - Introduction to the Sol'Ex project*

*Other projects - listening to Jupiter, making your own cloud chamber, listening to radio conversations? between ISS and Earth, building a magnetometer*

?

In addition, I can offer:

?

*Photographing a boiling kettle: Taking and processing solar astrophotos and time-lapses*

*An idiot's guide to finding the way around the night sky: star-hopping for those with no sense of direction*

?

I am on to thinking of others - but if you have any particular topics you want a talk on then that might stimulate me to write it for you!

?

Andy

Subject: [baa-rag] RSGB Convention 11-13/10/2024
?
Can I ask whether anyone else beside me are going to RSGB Convention?

Apparently, my talk at the International Astronomy Show on mapping Milky Way by radio went down very well, and I have now been invited to give the same again at the RSGB Convention, which I will be doing just after lunch on Sunday.

There does seem to be an appetite out there for talks about radio astronomy.

Following my IAS talk few weeks ago, (and my previous muon detection talk at Astrofest in Feb 2024), I have now been booked to give:

Series of 8 online lectures for a Malaysian Astronomy Group on radio astronomy(!)

RSGB Convention Oct 2024.

Talks at three other local astronomy groups.

So - as all these lectures are being written (I'm halfway through!), if you know anyone who wants a fun and interesting talk on radio astronomy and what amateurs can do then ask them to contact me - details on following URL:

So much interest I have had to register myself on above website!

The list of lectures on that site needs updating as it only shows 3, and I am now up to 10 on offer.

I must say the success of my Astrofest and IAS talks should be largely attributed to the sterling work being done by BAA RAG members manning a stall at each conference. At both conferences, those stalls went flat out with folks asking questions and seeking advice - in fact, I think they may have been the busiest stalls of all! Andrew Thomas and company worked so incredibly hard for 2 whole day at Astrofest and one whole day at IAS, whereas all I needed to do was speak for one hour!

Thanks guys!

...

And thanks too to all BAA RAG members who have supported me in my radio astronomy journey!

Best wishes to all,

Andy

Re: UK meteor scatter system and Wind profiling radar

Hi Brian,
?
OK all good.
?
I have an angle grinder and a Campervan with an invertor, so may be available to assist if required.
?
I'd certainly be interested in one or two of the antenna for use at my SDR sites.

Hello? Martin

We are in touch with Dr Hooper and have identified the stuff we can use for? the 6m beacon project. A site visit will be made.

Thanks for the "heads up" on this.? The transmitter was pulsed and used valves so sadly not much use to us but some of the antennas can be re-purposed if we are given permission to remove them. It'll be? quite a task with much use of the angle grinder by all accounts.

All the best

Brian

It may also be worthwhile mentioning the UK amateur beacon project.
?
I bet the wind profiler had useful antennas / electronics that could be re-purposed, and that may be a more appealing outcome to Dr Hooper, than them simply ending up in a skip or as landfill.

Re: UK meteor scatter system and Wind profiling radar

Apologies for the delay in replying.
?
I think it is worth asking about the site and equipment. My experience is that if you never ask, you never get....
?
My guess is that some of the other kit will be redeployed to other sites, but the rest will either be mothballed, or they will get a company in to clear the site, in which case it will be scrapped. I suspect the antenna system will fall into the latter category, as the removal and storage costs would outweigh the likelihood of reuse.

Meteor Beacon GB3MBA OFF

Hello folks

It looks like the beacon is OFF at present. Major building works are going on at the site and Nigel tells me that he can't get access until Monday.

Signal

Hello folks,
?
I am new to the hobby and have recently been using one of my antennae to observe the sky illuminated by the GB3MBA meteor beacon signal at 50.408 Mhz. Whilst engaged in this activity, I have also noticed a permanent, quite strong radio signal
that is present at 50.332 Mhz. I am in Newton Stewart, Dumfries & Galloway, and I wondered if anyone on this forum could through any light on what this may be.
?
Best wishes, Nigel?

Re: UK meteor scatter system and Wind profiling radar

It would be a good idea to ask, but if they want real money instead of tupprnce...........
Would fancy the GPS water vapour one just to play with.

Martin,
?
David Hooper told me "Capel Dewi, near Aberystwyth in west Wales: . Unfortunately, its funding has recently been withdrawn and the site is in the process of being decommissioned"
?
Do you want me to ask him specifically what is happening to the hardware and site?

Meteor Echo of the day

开云体育

This image shows two echoes seen? at the Norman Lockyer Observatory and? at the NW Hampshire location with Horizontal polarisation.

The second, upper, echo although rather feint at NW Hampshire has distinctly different Dopper shifts as observed from the two locations.

?~+15Hz at NLO and -~-5Hz as observed from NW? Hampshire. This provides some insight into how meteor locations and trajectories might be triangulated using radio using established Bi-static radar techniques.? The data displayed on the live streams is not have sufficient resolution or precision to take this ambition very far but the data being streamed to the project server has much higher resolution and precision and includes the necessary timing data which may make this possible.? The big question is... will we ever be able to get observations of the same echo from a sufficient number locations, with sufficiently diverse reflection geometry to make this possible ?

GB3MBA UK Meteor Radar Project Face Book group

Hi All
?
Just to let you know that there is also now a Face Book group in support of discussion and information sharing for the GB3MBA UK Meteor Radar Project . Now to be clear it is not designed to detract from the very useful and helpful discussions on here it is just an addition that is designed to extend our reach and interaction.
?
I realise Face Book is a love hate thing so please just treat this as information and an option.
?
?
Kind Regards
?
