Zoom meeting on practical aspects of starting hydrogen line observing
开云体育(As long as Andy Thomas and Paul Hearn are happy for me to run such a Zoom session), would anyone like me to run a Zoom meeting to help folks understand exactly what they need to get started in mapping the arms of the Milky Way and demonstrating dark matter in the Milky Way for themselves? (Follow my talk last night). I could discuss exactly what you need to buy and give examples with detailed description of how to put the kit together and software to use with prices and advice from my own experience. This would be aimed at beginners with limited or no experience – an desire to get involved, around ?200-?300, and ability to wield a hammer and a drill is all that would be required! Andy |

BAA Weekend Winchester April 2024
开云体育I have never been to this before. After the discussion y/day I am thinking of attending – I note ticket prices are quite expensive at ?275. Does this include accommodation? Andy |

Ian Williams has been seriously unwell
开云体育I am sure everyone on this group would like to wish Ian a speedy recovery and that he feels much better soon. He is long term member of BAA RAG and has been admitted to hospital this week. I am uncertain whether he is still there. Andy |

Re: Lead placed under muon detectors in coincidence mode
开云体育More practical. Find a gun club and ask them for their scrap lead shot. I only realised after casting a classic twin hole lead block arrangement, that lead shot is mixed with Antimony to make it harder and that Antimony absorbs radiation quite well. Which obviously leads me on to say that if you are putting lead in the path, make sure it is pure, otherwise the results may be erroneous. ? David

Re: Lead placed under muon detectors in coincidence mode
开云体育I couldn’t find depleted uranium on ebay, so I’ve ordered some Plutonium instead – the sellers assure me it is very dense – it was either that or Polinium! ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]>

Lead placed under muon detectors in coincidence mode
开云体育Having tried 1cm and 3cm of lead today, I now have all the lead I have under the detectors – not quite the 5cm I understand needed to completely isolate detectors from ground-sourced muons but does represent 3kg of lead flashing folded into square 10x8cm in size and about 4cm thick!!! Results will be presented on 5th January at BAA RAG Zoom meeting. Andy |

Re: Muon detectors and lead
开云体育Thanks Andrew. I have 3kg of lead. Just finished first test – ca. 1cm lead = no distinguishable change in muon rate today from before lead used (0.140 to 0.134 but I doubt that I significant). Next step will be 2cm lead. ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]>
