Save the Channel Islands MPAs !!!
Based on Pat's e-mail and verified by perusing the latest news articles on Curt Degler's http://www.californiafish.org/ , it sounds like we need to immediately write to the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) commissioners. As recreational scuba divers who understand what's at stake, we've got to give the commission the political support and backbone to stick to their great decision to establish the Channel Islands Marine Protection Areas (MPAs). It's quick and easy to e-mail them at fgc@.... If you've got time, it's even more effective to write or even call them individually - their names and resumes can be found at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/fg_comm/index.html . They can be written to at: The California Fish and Game Commission 1416 Ninth Street Sacramento, California 95814 phone: (916) 653-4899 A sample e-mail follows: Pat's earlier e-mail follows: Smiles, John Wolfe jwolfe@...

lost mask at breakwater
The waters have claimed yet more gear this weekend. I was doing an equipment exchange with a fellow divemaster candidate at Breakwater this weekend and when we surfaced, he had lost my mask. It was only a month old so I am a bit bummed by it. It is a Mares X-Vision with a blue Mares snorkel. It has my name, "AHMAD", on the mask strap. If it is found, please let me know. Thanks. Cool - a calendar
Notice there is also a calendar function. I've added the AT&T Pro-Am golf tournament (January 29th to February 4th, 2001) as a test of this function. If people like this idea, I'll add other events such as this that have a dramatic impact on traffic and lodging in the Monterey/Carmel area. Other ones that divers may want to be aware of are the Historic Car races (usually in August), the CART cars at Laguna Seca (September), and the Monterey Jazz Festival, (September). I'll add these once the 2001 dates are announced. Steve Barnes

Housewarming
Hello everyone, Welcome. Make yourself comfortable. I brought a few items to christen the board... Bagels - that Monterey Express may never know hunger. Salt - that the sea may always have flavor. Wine - that joy and narcosis may reign forever. Hope everyone finds the board OK, especially BABA! Happy Diving, Erika

Advertising Diving Events on ba_diving
Chuck, Just a reminder to those that want to advertise their classes, events, sales, etc. that is why the other ba_divingevents list was created. It is used by several instructors, boats, etc. to list their activities. Gene B.

Ba_diving on best.com is dead. It needs to move.
I think my archives go back into 97, but I don't remember whether I have anything before that. It's all at home, and I've seen it recently. I think I zipped them by year. I just saved them as text files. I'll take a look later. I remember the 40 thieves story. << Also, we get archives for free. I've got everything since sometime in 1998 we can prime it with. Is there anybody who has any earlier stuff squirreled away? (and I know BabaSCUBA would love to have a copy of the story of BabaSCUBA and the 40 Thieves (he didn't keep a copy). >> Mike Lanahan

Good bye Adverts!
We now have pledges up to $70. To those who volunteered, I'll be in touch tonight. It will probably take a week or two for the adverts to actually disappear. I have to mail them a check. Chuck

relating weather forecasts to actual diving conditions
3
Hello- I'm new to bay area diving and I'm planning to start doing some shore diving in Monterey, but I'm having trouble correlating the wave height forecasts from this page: http://www.garlic.com/%7Etriblet/swell/wamglance.html and the weather forecasts from NOAA: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/wrhq/TotalForecast.csh?TotalForecast+Monterey+PZ+535 to *actual* conditions at the dive sites. For example, for saturday the wave height forecasts seem to suggest something on the order of 6' or higher, while the NOAA forecasts specifically say 2-4'. For shore diving I would normally consider the first one to be a bit high and the second to be manageable, but I don't know how these two numbers even relate to the various dive sites, which are often at least somewhat protected. Has anyone worked out a rule of thumb for using these forecasts to determine in advance whether it's safe to dive in Monterey? I am confident I will know if it's safe when I see it, but I'd like to avoid the drive if it's not likely to be safe. Also, along those lines, which sites (besides the Breakwater) are some of the more protected shore dive sites in Monterey/Carmel? Lanier

Microsoft Outlook user tips for ba_diving
2
If your at work, (like me) you can keep all your ba_diving post separate from your work mail. 1) With outlook open, select File, New Folder from the menu bar 2) Give the folder a name like diving, make sure folder contains "mail messages" is selected 3) you will now have a sub folder under your inbox 4) select the organize button or select Tools, organize from the menu bar 5)You will see "Create a rule" you want it to say move new messages "sent to" "ba_diving@egroups".com into "diving" where diving is the name of your new folder. If your subscribed to multiple groups you can keep them all separate using this method Sorry to bore you all with this, but since were setting up a new group I thought it was relevant. Les

Links
2
I've populated the Links section, mostly by stealing from the Monterey Express links page (thanks, Tim). If you have any updates, send them to me for now, until we anoint an linkmeister. I know we are missing some clubs, and I suspect there's a dive shop or two missing, though I couldn't think of any. So please check to make sure your favorite club, shop, and dive boat is listed. -- Chuck Tribolet triblet@... http://www.almaden.ibm.com/cs/people/triblet Silicon Valley: Best day job in the world.
