I own one of the subject lathes, made about 1948. In my efforts to get it back to working condition I notice two 5/16-18 threaded holes in the headstock casting, below the spindle (see attached image). Can anyone help me understand what these threaded holes were for?

Those are not factory made.? Perhaps someone had some form of a collet adapter.? If you don’t want them visible, screw allen set screws in them and add a drop of Loctite.?

Thanks ever so much.
Any clue as to the purpose of the two unthreaded holes in the headstock casting, just below the gear train cover (see image). They appear to be in line with the gears on the spindle.

Ralph, These holes on the headstock body are a mystery to everyone.? There are no attachments that go in them and perhaps they are from manufacturing for indexing purposes.

Possibly someone had made a spindle lock and made those to mount it to?

While searching for something else just now, I accidentally discovered another mystery hole instance in the old photo album Mark's lathes.

This from a Google image search, an old 12" Atlas Craftsman design ( a sold but archived ebay ad photo , more photos there ) with front screw mounted gear covers leaving the pulleys open upwards and to the rear.
?
So, vestigial holes.

These holes line up with the spindle back gears. ?I wonder if the intention was they could be used with a suitable detent pin for indexing holes not provided for by the 60 holes in the bull gear?
|
I have searched thru my 1937 and the 1967 How to Run a Atlas lathe handbooks and I find no information as to their use. In the 1937 book, it shows those with round head screws and washers installed.
Interesting that they align with the back gears.

It's funny that this popped up today.? I was just out in the garage messing around with my 10F (with the horizontal countershaft so these holes are empty) and was wondering what the unused holes were for.? I had also guessed that they might be a direct indexing method based off of the gears like Pumpguy did earlier.

Wally: Good find and mystery solved. On my earlier Craftsman 12" with Babbitt bearings the holes for gear guard screws are vertical.
