Atlas-Craftsman Metal Working Machines
/g/atlas-craftsman
NOTE: Certain ISP's (Yahoo is by far the worst offender, but not the only one) will put messages from any groups.io Group into the member's Spam trap. And then send a spam complaint message to groups.io. Recent reports seem to indicate that the spam complaint message (and subsequent unsubscription) is generated when the member deletes a message from the Group from within the spam trap. So if you find a Group message in your spam trap, move it to your Inbox first. Then you can safely delete it if you wish. In any case, upon receipt of this complaint, some rule or regulation requires groups.io to unsubscribe the member from that specific Group. If this happens to you, first remove the message or messages from your spam trap, marking each one as "Not Spam". Then follow the instructions from groups.io to re-join the Group. A re-join does not require approval and if you have made at least one post before the unsubscription and had it approved, your next one after re-joining will not require approval. The only thing that we can do about this problem if you use Yahoo.com is to suggest that you get another email address. With a few providers such as AOL or Compuserve, you can turn off their spam trap and use the one provided by your mail manager.
This group is dedicated to the users of Atlas metalworking machinery including lathes, shapers, horizontal mills, drill presses, saws and accessories produced by Atlas for Atlas and Sears under the Craftsman or Master Craftsman badges and by AA Engineering for Sears under the Dunlap and Craftsman names.
This Group was formerly [email protected]. It moved to groups.io in February, 2018 due to increasing problems with YahooGroups, particularly with photos, somewhat with files and once in a while with messages. All members of the previous Group were copied to this one. During the week following the move, several hundred former members were unsubscribed. Some of those were no doubt ones who no longer had an interest in Atlas-Craftsman machines but had forgotten that they were still a member of the Group. That is understandable and we wish them well. However, it has been reported a few times that some members with Yahoo.com email addresses were unsubscribed without being consulted because Yahoo put the emails from the new groups.io Group into their respective spam traps. I won't drag this out by explaining how that happened, but anyone who finds themselves in that position and who wants to rejoin is certainly welcome to. Rejoins will not have to again go through the approval step.
All new members are automatically put into Moderated status (as an aid to culling out bots, etc.) Because of that, it is suggested that all new members should post their first message as a brief introduction, perhaps including what equipment they own and/or why they wanted to join. The benefit to the new member is that the approval of that first post can be gotten out of the way and if a thread starts that you want to reply to, your reply will show up without any delay other than round-trip transit time.
Because the cumulative file storage size of the Group's files and photos exceeds 1 GB, this Group is set up as a paid Group with an allowance of 10 GB at a cost of currently $120.00 per year, payable monthly, We have set up a PayPal account for small donations to cover this small but necessary cost. The email address associated with this account is [email protected]. To donate to the Group, log into your PayPal account and send your donation to that address. In order to keep the account out of trouble with PayPal, send your donation as Payment for Goods & Services, not Friends & Family. This will, of course, result in a small percentage of the donation going to PayPal, but we have been advised that the cost to be able to legally claim non-profit status would be far more than PayPal's fee. Anyone who wishes to know the current balance in the Group's account, please email the Group Manager at the address given below. Note that emails to this address go to all owners and moderators. If you need to contact a specific owner or moderator, you will need to get their email address out of one of their posts.

Actually, 1 1/2 x 8 is such a common size they actually do sell chucks with a backplate that is pre-threaded. <br/><br/>Charlesxlch58@... (Charles)Wed, 02 Apr 2025 18:12:20 -0700Re: Atlas Lathe FS Reno Nv CL

The backplate is a separate item that you buy or you make. Nobody sells new chucks with a backplate because they don't know what lathe you have. </div>

<div class="elementToProof" style="">
Go to littlemachineshop.com and buy a backplate for about 30 bucks (for 4") or up, then turn it to match your spindle and chuck and you are done. </div>

As for the chuck, just do a search on eBay for K72-xxx where xxx is the diameter in millimeters. So, it is 100mm for 4", 125 for 5" and 150 for 6" chucks. The prices I found with great ease start at $59 and go up from there.</div>

<div>ok a little bit of progress.. I discovered that the big stud (10-112) at the bottom of the whole motor and counter shaft carrier the outer nut was about 1/4" away from the frame allowing the whole thing to move. That has been tightened so it is against the frame where the frame seems to want to sit. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>I put the motor on the mount with no belt and there is very slight vibration in the bed of the lathe but im sure some rubber feet will sort that. Next i was going to just put the belt from the motor to the counter shaft however tightening that bottom bolt has moved the motor position and the belt is looser than a hookers knickers so new belt needed again before i can move on to the next bit but progress made. </div>hedgesben@...Sun, 23 Mar 2025 04:45:53 -0700Re: lathe vibration

When looking fo a replacement I found a motor and VFD pair from Automation Direct that was just a little more than a new single phase motor, so I splurged. Best thing I ever did for the old lathe. Leveling with a machinist level was second. Link-a-belt (?) With the old motor was also a very good change. </div><div><br/></div><div>Single phase motors, by their nature will have some vibration. <div>Yes, that is what I meant. Those bearings and shaft and then motor. Also, the belt may generate some vibrations if it has a bend in it. Old, hardened belts may do that</div>

<div>@Jon, im fairly happy about the big pulley. my friend made a mandrel up and put it in his mill. there was 10ths of a thou of run out as best as we could tell. I dont have a way of testing the physical shaft.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>@Greg The motor that came with mine isnt the original however its a decent british make. The issue is that if i just sit the motor on the bench with no belt i can feel slight vibration in the bench. So the motor does vibrate, whether or not it still would if clamped solidly to the bench is another matter and whether or not that is accounting for all the vibration i have no idea. The motor doesnt fit on the motor mount so someone has made up a 1/2" thick plate bolted to the motor mount with the motor bolted to that. Having measured the mounting holes on the lathe bracket they dont seem to match any modern standard its a little tricky to know where to measure from.</div>hedgesben@...Sat, 22 Mar 2025 11:49:52 -0700Re: lathe vibration
