Antarctica: DXCC vs Continent & ADIF
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello all, After sending this email to Jim (I don't know if he is in the list so I am CCing him) I have checked the WAC page () and I see that there are only 6 continents, not 7 and Antarctica is not recognized as a Continent by the ARRL. WAC: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America. ADIF: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America + Antarctica Wikipedia shows some proposals but one of them is Africa,
America, Asia, Europe, Antarctica (North & South America count
as one single continent) but it is also showing the ADIF
selection. IMHO the ADIF proposal is for me
the best one adding "us" (the hamradio folks) more options :-) but
it is not aligned with the WAC.
How did we get to the selection
of 7 continents instead of 6, would it make sense to contact the
WAC commitee from the ADIF group for this topic? :-)
Thanks for reading.

Hello Jim, Testing KLog I have found some potential inconsistency between ADIF and your file that I would like to share with you. In ADIF.org you can see 7 continents (). Number 7 is Antarctica. Antarctica is the DXCC 13 in ADIF. In your cty.csv you can find: "CE9,Antarctica,13,SA,13,74,...." You are listing continent "SA" for "Antarctica" with DXCC 13. I obviousy recognice CE as Chile and Chile as SA... but I think that your file should be updated and define "Antarctica" a Continent "AN", Antarctica. What do you think? Thank you for all your work! I can understand why Antarctica is not a continent for WAC. There are very few resident amateurs there and they will be research scientists who very much have a day job. Just as the ISS is not a separate entity.

For information, the 6 vs. 7 continents and WAC was discussed in adifdev in 2006 and Antarctica was added later that year to ADIF version 2.1.8
The discussion is available here:
?
As was pointed out, there are other contexts that reference Antarctica such as the ARRL DXCC list:

Thus no change is required. 73, Dave, AA6YQ |

In addition to Dave's good argument, I would point out two things: 1.? There is nothing wrong, and much right, with affirmativly calling out correct continent information.? ?This may well _already_ be helping WAC and any other award or contest that omits Antarctica by identifying DXCC Antarctica when relevant to easily eliminate QSOs that don't qualify. For all we know, it helps IOTA and other apps that _do_ support Antarctica.? 2.? We are future ready.? What if WAC added an Antarctica endorsement tomorrow?? ?All this discussion is rendered instantly irrelevant.?? WO7R? Hello all,I see two entities at that URL with "AN" as the continent: "3Y Peter 1 I." and "CE9/KC4 Antarctica". WAC: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America.IOTA also uses 7 continents, and classifies several southern island DXCC entities (Bouvet, Peter 1, Heard, MacQuarie, South Georgia/Orkney/Sandwich/Shetland) as part of Antarctica rather than Oceania, South America, or South Africa. (IOTA also classifies Maldives as Asia rather than Oceania.) The ADIF definition of the IOTARefNo data type says "CC is a member of the Continent enumeration", so ADIF needs to support all the continents that IOTA does.
