Lee <jenny@...> Date: Thu, Jan 9, 2025 at 4:54 PM Subject: Wanted: comedic short fiction < ~ 1000 words for stage/radio To: <lauren.d.yee@...> . ~~~ As part of Writing Atlas, we are working with a well-known NYC arts organization to find short-form funny prose fiction <1000 words long in the near future. We are looking for 5 pieces over the next year. (They can go up to 3,000 words, but it’s the same fee, so makes sense to do 1,000). They will pay ~$500 all-in for first stage/audio rights to be read on stage by a reputable actor (often from Broadway or TV) and then broadcast as part of an audio program that airs nationally. Writer keeps print rights, but it can’t be published before it’s read on stage. (If we need an editor to bring it over the finish line, that fee might be split with the editor. But generally looking for things ready to go that only need light editorial feedback. We will give you an option of working with an editor if we think that is a path). These should be fiction fiction, rather than Sedaris-stylized memoir, Shouts and Murmurs or Onion-type satire. In other words, it should be a story with beginning, middle and end. Non-previous published fiction writers okay (even good!) This ideally should be something that is already in the works, that just needs light editorial feedback since the timeline before the end of their fiscal year is short. It is also going to be recorded for radio, so it needs to be family friendly. Further down the line, they will start looking for comedic fiction works that are 2000-3000 words long again, but right now the gap is for the <1000 words pieces If you know anyone, have them email me at jenny@... with Comedic Short Fiction and their name somewhere in the subject line, then a little about themselves, their cell phone, and who referred them in the body of the email. They can also add any info they want. If helpful, I can send them 5 examples commissioned by the team that they liked as a reference point. I’ll also be able to send them the form and instructions on how to submit. For guidance, these are some current themes they are exploring, but they are happy to consider any topic as long as it's funny: 1) Classics with a twist/retellings of classics 2) Sibling stories 3) Transitions 4) Lost & Found 5) An evening about sports Here are the samples of 6 stories from 1000-3000 words they have done: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/9d2ogxs6rs2sx0xn0jz5h/AOSTzL7BKl3a-rvFVtDy2KM?rlkey=2fkbcb3whqmcar0plbsjbio6k&dl=0 Thanks! ZjQcmQRYFpfptBannerEnd FYI ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Clubbed Thumb <admin@...> Date: Sat, Dec 21, 2024 at 11:09 AM Subject: Announcing the next Biennial Commission To: Lauren <lauren.d.yee@...> Submit your proposal by March 20th, 2025 View this email in your browser FOR THE NEXT BIENNIAL COMMISSION, CONSIDER THE WORK OF CHRISTOPHER DURANG Every other year Clubbed Thumb invites playwrights to propose plays inspired by a particular prompt. The application is open to all, and the anonymous proposals are read by a panel of theater artists. The winning proposal(s) receive (or split) a $15,000 award and development support. This year we lost one of our great comic dramatists: Christopher Durang. We’ve been reflecting on how powerful and much-needed savage humor like his is in a world like ours today. So, for the 10th Biennial Commission, please consider his work, especially from the 1980’s. We read Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You, Beyond Therapy, The Marriage of Bette and Boo, and Baby with the Bathwater, but feel free to engage with any of his work. We highly suggest reading out loud. Your play should include: - A dysfunctional family or relationship (but this is a Clubbed Thumb show so anything but a biological family or romantic relationship) - A mangled version of a song in the public domain - A kilt - A series of nicknames (which may or may not be explained) - A spiritual middle manager You can have three stage directions total for the whole play, with one exception… “She/he/they/it throws a __________.” You can include this one as many times as you want. You can have three props of your choosing, plus any of the following: a Snoopy doll, a snake-in-the-can, a reward cookie, or a dead baby. Think about the funniest actresses you’ve encountered. Write hysterical, vicious, and virtuosic parts for them. As always, please consider the Clubbed Thumb parameters and aesthetic. Playwright Invitation - Dramaturg-Playwright Match Program
Hello Playwrights of AA Drama, My name is Ally Varitek. I am a dramaturg (who most recently put out a call for artists for Amphibian Stage's SparkFest), and I want to let you know about an exciting opportunity for emerging playwrights! I’m currently involved in the Digital Development Project (a.k.a. DDP), a new process-based initiative with the goal of connecting emerging playwrights with emerging dramaturgs to collaborate on new play development. We're currently accepting playwright applications for The Match. The Match is a DDP initiative that matches playwrights to dramaturgs for subsidized dramaturgy sessions over the span of three months. Selected playwrights will be matched with an emerging dramaturg whose expertise and interests align with the playwright’s needs. From there, you can have 3 one-on-one meetings online to chat through your questions, get written notes on your script, or a hybrid of the two—whatever works for you and your process. Oh, and the best part of all? It’s digital, and there's no cost! I would love to invite you to submit! [I’m on the dramaturg team and so we’ll have the chance to be potentially matched] [AND/OR] [I know some dramaturgs in the group who would love your work]. The submission window is September 18th-October 1st, but we’re only accepting the first 100 applications, so I recommend getting your play in as soon as you can. We’ll be selecting approximately 8-15 plays for this year’s iteration. Plays submitted this round will also be eligible for future projects, including workshop and staged reading opportunities. I’ve included our submission guidelines below and a link to the Google Form Application. You can read more about our projects on Instagram @digital_dramaturgs to stay up to date on what spaces we dream up next. You can email us at thedigitaldramaturgs@... with any questions, too. Submission Guidelines: You self-identify as an emerging playwright with a play that’s in development and has not been produced - or - has been significantly rewritten since last production - or - has an unconventional production history that warrants more development. . The work is primarily in English. (We hope to expand in the future.) The work is 150 pages or less. You can be available to meet during US daylight hours; international artists are welcome to submit. We are not accepting books of musicals at this time. How to submit: Fill out an application at bit.ly/DDPMatch24 and attach the following: 1) One PDF document including: a cover letter letting us know why you'd like to be part of the Match; a short synopsis of your play; the play's production history; a ten-page sample of the play you are submitting (approx. one scene you feel is representative of the play and your writing); and your full play submission (with pages numbered). With Heart, Ally Varitek Affiliate Dramaturg -- Ally Varitek | she/her/hers SparkFest Apprentice Amphibian Stage More about SparkFest '24 amphibianstage.com120 S. What is it that makes your work unique? I grew up in a small town outside of Seoul, where I could see some of the ghost buildings across the river in North Korea – no one’s living in there. They’re just for show and they’re not even that impressive! My father was born in ??? North Korea and fled to South Korea with my grandparents when he was only 4. The three-long year-war that killed five million people, left Korea divided and prevented innocent people like my father from ever returning home. Unlike the media, which only focuses on the information that they want their listeners to know, SELL ME will share the brutally honest reality of having been born in North Korea and the consequences of living in the most horrendous country in the world. This piece is for my father, my grandparents, and all the people who cannot go back home. 2. What kind of experience do you hope audiences will have during your show? SELL ME follows a fifteen-year-old girl, Jisun. I would hope that the audience can all go back to their childhood and go on the journey with her. 3. What is the most important thing you hope audiences will take away from your show? Too often, when people think of North Korea, they automatically imagine nuclear weapons and military parades, forgetting the suffering of the average citizen and especially women. I hope that SELL ME helps its audience to rethink their preconceived notions of the country by sharing a unique personal perspective of a North Korean woman defector and survivor while raising important questions about women's rights, diversity, and empowerment. SELL ME. I am from North Korea, written and performed by Sora Baek. She was one of six finalists for outstanding solo performance at the 2024 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Review by Tom Scott, August 2, 2024 Jisun is poor. She sells apples at a market in North Korea. Sometimes she even kills squirrels to eat. But she needs more money. Her mother is dying and can’t afford medication to ease her pain. So, on her 15th birthday Jisun decides to sell herself. A broker says he will help her escape to China. She’ll be sold to a man and will have to look after him. Her duties will include washing his dirty underwear, cutting his toe nails and “making babies with him”. That’s the explosive starting point to this remarkable play, written and performed by Sora Baek. And if you think it sounds implausible, you should know that Baek’s grandparents and her father, then aged 4, were refugees from North to South Korea. Baek has also been inspired by true stories of women defectors from the most authoritarian country on the planet. Jisun and five other women make the perilous journey across a river into China. But none of the men want to buy Jisun. A late developer, she’s often mistaken for a boy. They humiliate her, abusing her by pulling down her underwear. So now she has no money and is an illegal immigrant in China. Eventually she sees a Christian

The Collective is led by three artists: Ruth Chan (Composer), Simon Wu (Lead Co-Book Writer and Lead Co-Lyricist), and Jonathan Man (Co-Book Writer and Co-Lyricist), with Isobel Hawson as our Producer. VIETGONE Returns to Seattle
Pork Filled Productions and SIS Productions, in association with the Theatre Off Jackson, present Vietgone by Qui Nguyen, directed by Mimi Katano, music direction by YUELAN, August 9th to 24th, at the Theatre Off Jackson (409 7th Ave. S. in Seattle). It’s 1975, after the fall of Saigon. Two young survivors (who may or may not be the playwright’s parents) meet in Arkansas. Will this strange land of burritos, bikers, hippies and pot allow them to fall in love? Flipping stereotypes and remixing history, Vietgone cooks up a sexy, funny romp (with live music!) that’s a secret origin story for playwright Qui Nguyen (author of Raya and the Last Dragon)! “There’s new interest in the Vietnamese story in America,” says PFP Executive Director Roger Tang. “There’s Viet Thanh Nguyen’s The Sympathizer just on HBO and local artist Susan Lieu ‘s memoir The Manicurist’s Daughter this year. Vietgone kicked off this trend as the first work of art to examine the first generation of Vietnamese coming to this country. “Moreover, Qui has been a guiding light for Pork Filled, starting from his Vampire Cowboy days (where he won an Obie). He’s mixed humor and genres like horror, sf, and fantasy; his artistic sensibility permeates all our work. PFP was the first to present his work in the Northwest-it’s natural for us to produce Vietgone.” “The rom-com aspect of Vietgone is one that SIS Productions’ audiences will delight in. Our shows center Asian American relationships shared with a sense of humor to inspire people of all races to see Asian Americans through a human, rather than stereotypical lens,” explains Kathy Hsieh, Co-Executive Producer for SIS Productions. “When most people think of the Vietnam War or immigrants and refugees, it's pretty grim and trauma filled. Vietgone playfully flips this, encouraging us to relook at our parents and first-generation refugees through new eyes. They are hip, hot and human. The play inspires us to see our parents for who they really are, rather than through the stereotypes America has created of them.” The cast features Wendy Chinn, Joshua Erme, Megan Huynh, Van Lang Pham, and Hank Tian with Adele Limand Kathy Hsieh as understudies. The creative team includes Omar Faust (stage manager), Grecia Leal Pardo (production manager), Robin Macartney (sets), Nick O’Leary (projections), Tianxing Yan (costumes), Jessamyn Bateman-Iino (props), Kassey Castro (sound), Annie Liu (lights), Jasmine Lomax (fight and intimacy), Roger Tang (producer), Kathy Hsieh (producer), Kendall Uyeji (producer), Josh Valdez (producer), David Le (producer) and Alyda Sorm (producer) Vietgone plays Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm, with matinees on Sundays at 2pm. There is a special matinee Saturday August 17th at 2pm and an Industry Night, Monday, August 19th at 7:30 pm. Also, there is a Relaxed Sensory Performance, August 18th at 2 pm. The show is rated PG-14 for sexual situations, swearing, redneck racism, nightmares of war, and badass kung fu fighting. Tickets start at $10 and are available at https://pork-filled.ticketleap.com/vietgone. Tickets for the relaxed sensory performance are at https://pork-filled.ticketleap.com/vietgone-relaxed. PFP is a member of Teen Tix. For more info, email tix@... or go to www.porkfilled.com. Nautilus Music-Theater is offering two full scholarships for artists of color for the Balk Institute this summer. More info and inquiries can be made at www.wesleybalk.org. Casting begins Monday, so if you are interested please inquire asap! About the Balk Institute: THE 2024 WESLEY BALK OPERA/MUSIC-THEATER INSTITUTE The Complete Singer-Actor: Professional Development for Integrated Singing-Acting in all styles of musical storytelling JUNE 23 TO JULY 13, 2024 on the campus of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis-St Paul, MN "We don't teach singing; we don't teach acting, and we don't teach moving. What we teach is how to do all three at the same time." The Wesley Balk Opera/Music-Theater Institute is unlike any other professional development program in the country. Now in its 46th year, the Institute builds upon the basic skills of singing, acting, and moving, and unifies these essential musical and theatrical components into integrated performance. The intensive three-week session features an outstanding staff of instructors who create a stimulating and challenging environment, providing respectful observation, support, and instruction by focusing on individual growth instead of competition or comparison. Since its inception, the Institute has had a profound impact upon hundreds of diverse participants who have found its unique concepts applicable to all styles of theatrical performance, ranging from traditional opera to Broadway musicals to new and experimental music-theater.
