Whither A2 Geeks? 5
Hi— I was pruning the list of LinkedIn groups I belong to and ran across the Ignite Ann Arbor group. That got me to wondering whatever happened to the A2 Geeks. It seems to have fizzled out. Anyone interested in breathing some life into it, or do people feel that it's run its course? Dan

Hey folks, Anyone have one of these ancient behemoths gathering dust and want it gone? I’ve found a use for one. If you’ve lost the power brick, I’ll still take look at it if you’re close to A2/Yspi. Thanks. Larry 313-919-2287

Interested in working on a new website for WCCD? 2
The Washtenaw County Conservation District (WCCD) has a request for proposals for building a replacement for their website. I've attached it, in case anybody would like to bid on it. (I don't work for the WCCD. I borrowed a gardening tool from them and they noticed my unixmama e-mail address, and the conversation went from there. :) ) -Valerie -- ---------------------------------------------------- Valerie Mates, web developer, she/her unixmama.com & valeriesrecipes.com 734-973-2472 (landline) -----------------------------------------------------

looking for hard drive suggestions
Hello All I’m rebuilding a 2012 macbook pro and want to get a 1 terabyte drive for it. i’ve had good luck with Samsung EVO solid state drives but thought I’d consult the hive mind as to whether there might be better options or preferred vendors. I also want to get a new external backup drive since my current 4 terabyte backup drive is getting full. I actually found myself starting to clear space on the backup drive before I realized that it made much more sense to buy another drive. Besides the old backup drive is old school spinning platters , eewww, moving parts….. Thanks Andrew King King Technical Services-- Andrew in AA

Troubleshooting electric kettle? 2
Hello All We had a power surge and now this electric kettle doesn’t work. I opened up the base where all the electrickery happens and noticed this 100mf capacitor looks odd with the paper insides showing. Is this what a damaged capacitor looks like? I’m inclined to replace it and see if it works. Which brings me to my second question, where would I acquire a 100mf 35 volt capacitor? Thanks Andrew King King Technical Services

incremental backup options for Windows 10? 4
Hello All My work laptop is getting flakey so I’d like to start backing my data files up more frequently so I’m looking for an incremental backup solution so I don’t need to copy the whole directory every time. The whole laptop gets backed up to the company servers but it’s a lot of work to restore from the backup. I’d like to back up my data files (~30 GB) to a USB drive so I could plug my files into another computer in case mine goes belly up. Robocopy seems like a simple option although I’d need to remember how to use the command line….. < https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/52831.robocopy-complete-reference.aspx> Has anyone got any other utilities they could recommend? Andrew King King Technical Services RoboCopy (Robust File Copy) is a command-line tool in Windows. It is intended for consistent copying or mirroring of directories wherever the computer has access, including local drives, removable drives, Local Area Network, remote servers, and in the process guarantees that all file properties and permissions stay integral.

Follow-Up to Last Night's Entrepreneur Boot Camp Celebration
Hi Carly-- Looks good. Four of us had an interesting discussion in our Zoom breakout room about archiving Ann Arbor startup community founder stories, etc. to help future startups. (more on this later.) I normally upload the A2NewTech videos to Youtube and have this search URL that lists them. If you add A2NewTech to the Youtube tag, the 3/15/2022 video will also show up.... if you change it to public. Otherwise, we have a Gdrive spreadsheet that lists all A2NewTech presenters, including a short blurb about their venture, any website URL, and links to the meeting video(s). Scroll down to the end of the sheet to see what info we need to fill in for the 4 presenters on 3/15/2022. You can just email me the info for the four. We encourage new startups to search the list for keywords to find video segments that they might learn from viewing, So you see, we already have a small compilationation of Ann Arbor's entrepreneurial ecosystem. SPARK and Center for Entrepreneurship and others probably have similar archival content. What's needed is collective agreement on how to proceed, consolidate and maintain the archive. Another recent event video prompted me to raise this discussion at the post-event break room at A2NewTech and again at A2B3's Zoom networking group where we happened to have 2 U-M librarians and the County Clerk. The recent event video was the Computer History Museum's video of their 3/10/2022 in-person panel discussion restarting after 2 years of COVID pausing, "The Power Law of Venture Capital". I also related the recent documentary "General Magic" about the visionaries who launched the stealth startup that led the staff to carry on the innovations to a whole series of other ventures after the original company realized it was too far ahead of its time. Those are the kinds of stories we need to track and document here while the principals are still around. We've done some of that at A2NewTech and DNewTech... and New Enterprise Forum. --Roger-- (not sure how much I will get back to my own LLC after a 2 year COVID pause...) higher speed internet options in AA? 3

Help with defeating a new zoning ordinance in A2 that negatively impacts maker community
Hello A2Geeks Community, This message comes from Francis Mills, a member of the maker community in A2 and long time member of Maker Works since its inception.... Though some may live outside city limits, this does negatively impact our creative community and creates a misunderstanding. Read Francis's message below - Best, Thea Eck A2 Geeks board member I'm seeking to organize people who could be negatively impacted by this proposed restriction on making in Ann Arbor. At the Ann Arbor Planning Commission meeting on April 2, 2021, new text was approved for the portion of our zoning ordinances that addresses "Home Occupations". The new language, if eventually approved by Ann Arbor City Council, would prohibit "Machine shop/metal working" as a Home Occupation. As someone who has machine tools at home and is occasionally a self-employed prototyper, I'm concerned that the Planning Commission wasn't briefed on benefits that home machine shops provide to A2 and most of its members are unaware of the entrepreneurial workshop activity that exists in basements, garages, apartments, home studios, and workshops around town. In particular, a fear of "tool and die" activities led to a prohibition of activities that are typically quiet, don't produce large waste streams, and are not, in practice, detrimental to neighborhood character--especially at the square footage cap addressed in the ordinance. I understand this will see at least two readings at City Council before a vote is taken. Prior to that, I plan to: 1. collect examples of makers/machinists/fabricators who aren't a nuisance, but rather provide value to their clients, neighborhoods, and the city, 2. develop a group letter addressed to City Council, that can be co-signed by all interested/affected parties 3. participate in public comment when this comes before City Council 4. support any other folks who might be in a position to speak up. In addition to letter writing or public comment, we can also contact both our City Council Members and the Ann Arbor Planning Director. The city staff report and draft language is here: https://a2gov.legistar.com/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=4901624&GUID=32DB5529-C284-4E33-92F5-0190D6970870&Options=&Search= A slight amendment was made to item 2.b. (to broaden the understanding of "Craft work"), prior to the Planning Commission vote but clause 4.h. remains--that's what needs to be removed. Also, a recording of the discussions are available on CTN's youtube channel. Discussion starts at 3:17:28. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXIfTo1AZhg Please let me know if you have a story I should be telling or if would like further information. What to do with a broken samsung S7 edge phone?
Hello All I've replaced my samsung S7 edge cell phone (G935V) and was thinking I should replace the broken screen and keep the old phone as a spare. But the ifixit kit for replacing the screen is $170 and they rate it as a "difficult" repair (links below). Now while I enjoy the challenge of repairing sealed units the cost of the kit is 2/3 what I paid for a new-old stock replacement phone and it's unlikely to come out as well as a new phone since this would be my first time attempting this sort of repair. So I'm trying to figure out what to do with the broken phone. I'd still like to get it repaired so referrals to possible repair shops are appreciated. Failing that I'd pretty much give it away to a good home so let me know if you want to try and revive it. Laptops For Solar Schools 7
Hi A2 Geek Friends, We are traveling to Guatemala on Dec. 26th to install solar on a school. All next year we will be setting up solar schools. Once a school gets electricity their next goal is to get computers. Laptops are vital to remote communities. They give rural kids a chance at keeping up with their city counterparts. Last year one of our solar schools started their first High School classes because they had computers. Your laptops helped us win the 2019 Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association Exemplary Achievement Award in Solar Power with our solar computer school in the remote village of Tiritibol, Guatemala. Do you have a laptop that still has a little life on it that you are not using? We can put it to good use. Your laptops will be completely cleaned and receive a new operating system so your data will be safe. You can contact me with the word Laptop in the subject line if you have any questions. It is easy to drop off computers at Maker Works during Maker Works Hours: https://www.maker-works.com/our-hours Just tell the front desk the computer is for ATC. Please help us spread the word. If you find you get a new computer for Christmas and would like to drop your old one off after the holidays, we will be collecting computers all year. Many thanks, John John S.
