In 1817, the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Bodewadami Nations made the largest single land transfer to the University of Michigan. This was offered ceremonially as a gift through the Treaty at the Foot of the Rapids so that their children could be educated. Through these words of acknowledgement, their contemporary and ancestral ties to the land and their contributions to the University are renewed and reaffirmed.

DPL Repair Cafe re-launching after summer schedule
Hello I kept running into problems with DPL-approved publicity for our Repair Cafe, and realized I hadn't announced it yet. Still working on the publicity, but would appreciate it if those who can conveniently get to our east side Detroit location would come next Saturday. The branch is at 13330 Conant (just south of Davison) in Detroit. The program runs 11-1 next Saturday October 19. Phone number is 313-481-1771. The efforts duplicate to some extent the program at AHA!, but I hope that there will be interest. Jennifer Jennifer Dye 734-709-8502 http://www.linkedin.com/in/DyeJennifer

wafer fabrication/photolithography in Michigan? 2
Seeing if the A2B3 hivemind can help with this question from an acquaintance who has been advocating for safe water in Silicon Valley for decades and tackling dioxane and PFAS groundwater contamination there and elsewhere: "Are you aware of any companies in MIchigan that actually do wafer fabrication/photolithography there?" --Roger-- Roger Rayle rmrayle@...

Videos I mentioned at lunch yesterday
Here are links to the videos I mentioned during lunch yesterday. First, two videos about creating images using AI. Both are particulary focused on how AI can be used to create images that can look like different things when mutated in some way, including turning upside down, rearranging squares in the image, overlaying several transparent images, and creating a puzzle that can be assembled two different ways to produce two different images. I suggest watching them in the order below: Steve Mould: This new type of illusion is really hard to make: https://youtu.be/FMRi6pNAoag Stand-up Maths: How can a jigsaw have two distinct solutions?: https://youtu.be/b5nElEbbnfU I also briefly mentioned this video about the discovery and categorization of (all) the noble gases by William Ramsay together with lord Rayleigh for which he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1904. Rayleigh received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1904 for his part in the work. Chemistorian: The Incredible Discovery of the LEAST Reactive Elements (The Noble Gases): https://youtu.be/loqudG71uBM =Spencer

Bike for a visitor 2
Hi- An 18-year-old visitor from Israel is giving a year of service here in Ann Arbor, before his mandatory service in the Israeli army. He's kind of an amazing young man. One of his passions is mountain biking (he has raced) and he's looking for a good bike. If any of you know of a good bike in good condition bike that you might donate (for the year) or he could purchase, that would be terrific. He's a size medium / 155-165 cm. I think he's looking for 29" wheels, but this is not a must. Please let me know! Annie

Fw: 2024 IgNoble Awards
So much scientific research never gets the attention it needs to be appreciated ¡ for how laughably odd it is. That¡¯s where the Ig Nobel Prizes come in. Last night at MIT, some of the most brilliant people in the world subjected themselves to the 34th First Annual Ig Nobel Prize ceremony, organized by the Annals of Improbable Research magazine in collaboration with the MIT Press (video). Ten particularly gobsmacking academic papers were ¡°honored.¡± Host Marc Abrahams noted that every Ig Nobel Prize winner ¡°has done something that first makes people laugh and then makes them think.¡± No matter how high you are, this ceremony could not seem more weird. Each winner received 10 trillion Zimbabwean dollars. Hundreds of paper airplanes were thrown. Someone dressed up as a cow. Yes, of course, there was accordion music. B.F. Skinner¡¯s octogenarian daughter Julie Skinner Vargas was on hand to accept the Peace Prize for a paper her father published in 1960 about ¡°the feasibility of housing live pigeons inside missiles to guide their flight paths.¡± Wearing a white baseball cap, Vargas said, ¡°On behalf of my father, B.F. Skinner, I want to thank you for finally acknowledging his most important contribution.¡± She lamented that most people only know him for his research on operant conditioning and his best-selling book ¡°Walden Two.¡± ¡°Even the B.F. Skinner Foundation fails to put a missile on its hat,¡± Vargas said. ¡°So thank you for finally putting the record straight.¡± Then she threw her baseball cap into the audience and walked offstage. Here are descriptions of a few other winners, lightly edited for space and clarity: Botany: Jacob White and Felipe Yamashita, for finding evidence that some plants imitate the shapes of neighboring plastic plants. Anatomy: Marjolaine Willems et al, for studying whether hair on people in the northern hemisphere swirls in the same direction as hair on people in the southern hemisphere. Physics: James C. Liao, for explaining the swimming abilities of a dead trout. Physiology: Ryo Okabe et al, for discovering that many mammals are capable of breathing through their anus. (Not news in Washington.) Demography: Saul Justin Newman, for discovering that people famous for having the longest lives lived in places that had lousy birth-and-death recordkeeping. Biology: Fordyce Ely and William E. Petersen, for exploding a paper bag next to a cat standing on the back of a cow, to explore how and when cows spew their milk. An edited recording of the Ig Nobel Prize ceremony will be broadcast on public radio¡¯s ¡°Science Friday¡± on Nov. 29.
