Weird question: Attic fans

Hi, hive mind! ?

Last summer a workman installed a new attic fan to replace one that burned its engine out when something gummed up the blades. I was told the new one would automatically turn itself on and off based on the temperature. It isn¡¯t. It¡¯s still running. I feel nervous about?it. Should I leave it alone? Unplug it? Call another workman? What kind? Replace the fan again??

Color me confused.?

Thank you in advance!!

The University of Michigan is located on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe people.? In 1817, the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Bodewadami Nations made the largest single land transfer to the University of Michigan.? This was offered ceremonially as a gift through the Treaty at the Foot of the Rapids so that their children could be educated.? Through these words of acknowledgement, their contemporary and ancestral ties to the land and their contributions to the University are renewed and reaffirmed.

I'm no expert, but based on the behavior of our attic fan, it sounds like it is not set to the right temperature. Ours switches on when the attic reaches a certain hot temperature, which I'd guess is around 80 degrees F. If yours is still running, it is either set wrong or the sensor is broken.

Thanks, Katherine. I was thinking along the same lines. In past years, the fans self-managed, and would turn themselves off for the winter. I found a few articles, and there doesn't seem to be any clarity around off or on.

When the first fan burned out, we did have some moisture problems in the attic, so I'm worried both about having it run 24/7/365 but also about not having it run at all. Meh. OTOH, I'm learning that there's more to winter maintenance of the fans than I had ever imagined!
