ATLAS ? M. H. L. X. - ENJAY Refrig. Car

All,

Tom

Tom,
Here is what I know, more of what I don't know. Yes the car is Atlas but it was a Miller High Life reefer car. Some one; don't know who bought up some of the Atlas cars, don't know how many and place a Enjay/ vistalon sticker over the Miller Beer Hearld, don't know for what purpose. Enjay Plastics was division Enjay Chemicals, Atlas dose a very nice center flow hopper these days for this company. Vistalon is a compound added to rubber in the production of drive belts, CV boot covers and floor mats to name a few item.
I saw one of these car for sale last Aug. on EBay, so with your two and that one there are a least three cars out there.

That's a good one!? I have never seen it.

If I recall correctly, "Enjay" was a spellout of "NJ" or "New Jersey," my home state, similar to how "Esso" is a spellout of "S.O." for Standard Oil, in this case "of New Jersey" which was one component of the broken-up Standard Oil Trust.? With ExxonMobil, also known as Standard Oil of New Jersey plus Standard Oil of New York plus lots of other companies, a lot of that trust is back together again... but I digress...

Just checked on EBay and there are five of these cars for sale right now. I have no connection with any of these items that are for sale. But now I know that? there was at least eight cars done this way.

Not only was the Atlas Miller Beer cars used, so were Bachmann's 50' mechanical Miller Beer reefer used.

It gets better...

I searched on "Enjay" in the eBay N Scale section and found all five sale listings Michael mentioned.

However, there are three variations of the Enjay sticker!? There are "Vistalon," already mentioned, "Butyl" and "Chorobutyl".? $21 or $21.96 each... no thanks.

But wait, there's more... an "Enjay Promotional Set" which includes one of the A1G stickered boxcars, one of the Bachmann stickered boxcars, a Bachmann Santa Fe F-9, a Minitrix B&M auto rack, and an AHM Santa Fe caboose, plus a "Thunder Line" (AHM) power pack and track.? It also looks like there's a poster promoting / showing the flow of Enjay products to manufacturers.? It's quite the mixture of "Early N Scale."? I wonder how many of these exist, and I think now we know some of the origin of the Enjay cars.? $22.35 shipping from Michigan is a bit much...

Perhaps a footnote on the Enjay stickered A1G car is in order on the A1G website...

Cheers,
George (your list-owner)

Follow up on this... the Enjay Promotional Set sold for $52 plus shipping... OK, which one of you bought it :)

Picking up this topic for an update... I just purchased a lot of three pieces of rolling stock, one of which was a copy of the Enjay "Vistalon" car.? As we've noted, the "relettering" consists of stickers over the "Miller" trademark.? One side is in decidedly better shape than the other one!? You can probably guess which way I'll display it.

The lot of three including shipping was less than the asking price on just the one Enjay car in other listings.?
