I know of the photo that you are referring to, I saw?it in a magazine (I believe it was in Model Railroader) just after Atlas had released the tank car. When Atlas had released the beer can car in the GATX red scheme, I?bought one and ran it with the GATX whale car.? When people questioned me about it, I would tell them that the shipper could not get the full load into the one tank car.?? Michael

? That's a huge car by any standard whether it be scale or prototype.?

Thanks, George.
Yeah, he was around back then. He should know Atlas' strategy back then; the release of uncommon equipment, in addition to the usual stuff, which was exhibited in their locomotive models too.

'Tale of the Whale' in January 2018 Model Railroader
Gang,
Somehow I've managed to stumble into the digital edition of the January 2019 issue of Model Railroader (not sure how...) and on Page 26 is Jim Kelly's regular column "N Scale Insight."? The topic of his column for that issue is our old friend the A1G Whale-Belly Tank Car.? Jim's approach toward the car is more "What were they thinking?" but I'd counter that Roco's product for Atlas, released in 1970, had not been run before and hasn't been done since.? That's not the only A1G car that has that distinction. Perhaps a Letter to the Editor is in order... Cheers, George (your list-owner) |
Re: Still seeing A1G...
I still run my upgraded 85¡¯ stock cars and depressed centre cars, and I have a couple that I converted to track cleaners back in the early nineties. I also have a helium car and a vinegar car, but I haven¡¯t run them for some time.

Yes, the white ones, I am using the translucent ones now.

Re: Still seeing A1G...
Yup. '68-'69. Those were the years of greatest expansion of the A1G's. And yes, adding a new car was a real thrill. Anytime I rode my bike up to Nichol's Hobby shop and bought one (after saving up for what seemed like years -? a whole $1.50 - $2.00), I could hardly stand the time it took to ride home.
In my previous post, I alluded to not keeping up with the latest. The one exception, however, was converting to MT couplers. I began converting as soon as they were available in 1968. My A1G cars all got MT's except for my first 5-10 which I wanted to preserve for posterity. It was magic to see those little knuckles couple together without moving the car even an iota.
I still get out those first ones with Rapidos still on them just to see them go around the track.

Rick, I too have started a new N scale project, it started as a test track but has become a small switch layout. Using 99% Atlas/Roco track, I found that the A1G track insulators have become brittle over the years (have used newer Atlas insulators). The next section to be built will be a small yard. Hopefully I can start to dust of all those Atlas, AHM and early Con Cor cars. Michael?

Hi George, ? ?Currently will be starting a new N scale project. And plan to run my A1G cars. Best memory was when my aunt Diana and uncle Gene gave me the CN Center depressed car with transformer load for Christmas. My uncle Gene was a bit of a jokster (in a good way) ?by placing the car in multiple boxes from the largest down to the smallest the Atlas plastic case would fit inside. Open one box only to find a smaller box inside. When I got down to that smallest box I was wondering what would possibly be inside ? Man was I floored when I discovered that neat car inside. Not sure if the release date of that car though it feel that was some where around 68/69? But that memory has lasted years. That to me as we one of the best Christmas presents I got during that time period.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýi have many of the AIG freight cars.? Many ofthem are of uniqude design, such as the container flat cars,,pulpwood cara, the 85 foot hi cube cattle cars and those 94 foot jumbo tank cars. On September 25, 2018 at 11:15 AM "G.J. Irwin" <groups@...> wrote: |

side reefers and a few of the 40' double deck stock cars are still active. The rest have gone to the shelf. Michael Bishop

Re: Still seeing A1G...
I still run a lot of them. Of course, I have never really kept up with the latest anyway, but when you're three or more feet away from a train, the cars look the same, regardless of the generation. If you like the detail and all that, great but I have just never been that interested.
They are still pretty desirable too. An eBay auction just ended the other day with some original Atlas cars in it, along with a UP RSC-2, and they went for 178 bucks! I was surprised.

Re: Hamm¡¯s Beer
Right. The blanking out is related to the Importer's name. If Roco needed some floors to use on a different importer's cars, they blanked out the original Importer's name so they could use the floors and not discard them. Hence, just leaving the country of origin.
A scratched out name would not be from the factory. They always used a hot instrument, as d indicated, a soldering iron or similar, to do it.

Many of the cars I've seen in Trix and other boxes tho have had a soldering iron smear the inset label moulded on. Just leaves 'Italy' or 'Yugoslavia' in the next panel. I'm filling these in with tungsten putty to add weight. A bit of a chore, then file smooth and re-blacken/ weather a bit to disguise it. cheers d |
