Is the machine shop still available from one of the other companies? With the low doors I had always used it near the roundhouse and engine shop as a machine shop for rebuilding of engine trucks or steam engine drivers. It would be nice to have again, but?with the windows tinted green and a arc welding lighting unit flashing away inside.

occuring a while back about the original Atlas structures and more
specifically about the Machine Shop.

The guy thought they were Z scale (which hadn't debuted yet at the time of
these structures' release) or something other than N because the doors on
the machine shop were so small as to not allow an N scale boxcar to enter the
building.

He didn't stop to think that those doors wouldn't necessarily be for a rail
car. They are there for, say, some kind of cart or trailer with supplies on
it for the shop to be removed by the little gantry crane in front of the
shop.

Actually, most, if not all, of these models have been continuously produced
through the years.

Atlas' early structure kits were manufactured by Pola and Vollmer, mostly
Pola and these companies either marketed the kits themselves or other
importers marketed them in kit or built-up form.

I believe some of them are available to this day.

either way, they'd be useful models if they ever resurrected them...

I love to see pictures of the old packaging too. Thanks, Mike.

The larger, thicker cardboard boxes were the earlier ones for the
buildings. These were from about 1967 - 1969. Then Atlas began to use the thinner
cardboard versions and a lot of those were slimmer also. Just a whole different
"style."

For instance, you can find the L-shaped Engine House in both box versions,
the one like in which your Old Time Station is packaged, earlier, of course
and the the one like in which your Mainline Station is packaged later.

I hope I got the kit names correct. I'm going strictly from memory here but
I do have almost all of them.

As far as the train sets are concerned, I think the style of the one you
picture is the earlier style with the wide border around the contents of the
set inside.

There were also the ones with different color cardboard backgrounds and the
pieces bubble packed on the background. I think these were a little later
but I can't say for sure. Atlas may just have used a different style
packaging with different sets concurrently.

Oops, for stupid! I mistook the brakewheel BRACKET for a brakewheel.

Anyway, as I'm sure you know, the car would have been all black with
lettering except for the planking which is brown.

BTW, this was the most frustrating car I encountered in my quest to obtain
all of the A1G cars MIB back in the late nineties..

I won several on eBay and they came with one bulkhead missing or both glued
on or part of the load missing (although I think we agreed that RoCo may
have put a smaller lumber load with some cars) or both bulkheads without
brakewheel brackets.

And now yours that's a repaint!

I finally gave up.

I keep forgetting things.

That packaging is the earliest style Atlas (RoCo) used on the A1G freight
cars. It was replaced very early (late 1967-early1968) with the typical blue
plastic insert version which lasted the duration of A1G.

In fact, I would almost bet that car has been modified because nothing like
that has shown up in over 40 years and I would expect that at least one
would have surfaced by now.

Interesting,
I've seen quite a few of those cars but never with colored bulkheads.
It's hard to tell from the picture but the color looks similar to the Illinois
Central 40' steel DD door variant #2287b. on Georges A1G site. I have that
variant color (IC) car plus the proper orange color one.

Thanks for the info, George.

Alas, my little Therm Ice "reefer" I've had since the early seventies has
three of its four corner steps missing.

There is paint over the spots where the steps would have been attached,
though, so it was molded that way.

I have seen quite a few RoCo cars with non-fill where the corner steps are
concerned. Just not many with THREE missing! I must not have looked at it
too closely when I bought it.

It has always been one of my favorite A1G cars.

I have two Therm Ice cars. One has been painted over a National Dairy Despatch 2222 logo. I have no idea why this was done but you can clearly read the National Dairy lettering showing thru on the Therm Ice car. The two cars have the same silver body color.

Mine are still happily living their pristine lives in their original boxes.
Oh, except for one extra #3121 N.P. genuine "Pig Palace" car I bought while
completing my collection that came with no box.

It has, nonetheless, not had any modifications to it either.
