It's neither a Minitrix nor an Aurora (both made by Roco) because those two
were the same car with "HORMEL" in red.

It's not an Atlas A1G either.

I'm still trying to find info.

In cursing E Bay tonight I found someone selling some Atlas N scale cars which is not new, but one of the cars for sell is a Hormel Meat Reefer. This is not the one Trix had for sell. Did Atlas do a Hormel car? Thanks for any help.

2391 IC Reefer

I have found out from the IC Yahoo group that this paint scheme (on the 2391 reefer) is correct, only the number is wrong. The number that the IC used was 51000. The IC had only one car painted this way, an aluminum car with green lettering. It lasted up to the 1970's and is now in a museum.

A1G Accumulation

I started to accumulate A1G cars in December. I have been fortunate to find all but five of the primary cars. I would like to present my list in the hope that some member may have one they are willing to part with.

2202 PRR 40' Single Door Box Car
2374 RDG 40' Steel Flat Car
3001 N & W 60' Bulkhead Log Flat Car
2434 SP Bay Window Caboose
2436 CB & Q Bay Window Caboose.
Anyone having any one of these let me know.

The first Rivarossis from Con-Cor were just like the Atlas with the same
motor.

However, the Rivarossi can motor had been improved by that time to be a
little more robust than the earlier ones. The commutator was better with less
of a tendency to melt down and, since this was, by far, the major problem
area in these motors, the reliability was stepped up by this improvement.

It was later in the eighties that they started putting the open frame
motors in the steamers.

Con-Cor "red box" 4-6-2 same at Atlas/Rivarossi

 

Perhaps an obvious question, but...
The mechanisms in the Con-Cor 4-6-2 engines certainly seem
identical to the Atlas/Rivarossi ones. I have always
assumed that they were nothing more than the
Rivarossi Pacific with a long 6-wheel tender tacked on.

Am I correct? Did Con-Cor put a better motor in there,
or just ship 'em as-is?

At full throttle they looked like a nuclear power plant that had gone amuck. My friend and I unwrapped the wires from the rail and ran them off the AC.

I know I had illuminated bumpers with red bulbs. I am trying to remember whether I ever had any with clear bulbs.

Since these were track powered, their light ranged from an almost non-existant glow to a rather unrealistic brightness!

I'll throw out another obscure item: How about curved pier girders? I once had a bunch of those... I couldn't believe them when I saw them so I think I bought them all. I don't remember what radius of sectional track they fit, and of course I can't find a one of them now. They would have been useful to fill the "gaps" between Atlas piers.

OK, so I'm a little slow to respond to this topic...

At one time, Atlas also had printed poster sized reproductions of the artwork found on the train set boxes. There were at least these three:

- Santa Fe E-unit locomotive in red and silver "warbonnet" paint pulling heavyweight passenger cars, while above it, emerging from a tunnel to a bridge is an IHB 0-8-0 with a train of freight cars, including the Great Northern boxcar in green with "waving goat" (and no, that boxcar was not an A1G release!). This is arguably the "classic" train set box cover art.

- Pennsylvania E-unit alongside a Santa Fe GP-series diesel with freight cars, with a Burlington Route SD-series loco on a bridge with a freight train, the first car of which is a Great Northern "loader scheme" boxcar (which was an A1G release!)

- Scene outside the downtown of a city; a lower track with a Santa Fe switcher in zebra stripe paint scheme with a couple of freight cars, and on upper tracks, a Pennsylvania F-unit with corrugated passenger train and just the nose of a Burlington E or F unit in gray with red stripe.

Much of the equipment depicted was never done as A1G items.

Atlas sent me these posters for some reason many years; I think they were door prizes or other complementary items for the railroad club that I was in (and I left that club around 1995). Interestingly, I regained possession of them some years later-- well, I am assuming that they are the same copies-- I'll never know! They were a bit the worse for wear, certainly no longer "mint condition." All three are now hanging proudly in the stairwell to the basement.

I would not be surprised if the original artwork were to be on display somewhere within the Atlas offices.

posters as I don't believe I have ever seen them or heard of them for that
matter.

A question and a observation;

Did Atlas ever come with the #2508 remote control uncoupler? I know that it was shown in the catalog, but none of the LHS could ever get them. Then I switched to Kadee couplers and the whole thing became a mute concern. Now for the observations, on page 14 of the 1969 catalog which shows the pier sets. In the picture it has the Santa Fe E8 and two ATSF boxcars; the Shock Control paint scheme never was brought by Atlas,ConCor had the car in their line up of 40'cars. Also,I had some of the illuminated bumpers but some had clear bulbs and some had red bulbs. Was there two types or did I get some that were a mistake? Thanks for any help.

I am still looking for a # 2663 SantaFe coach for my collection....It
doesn't have to be absolutely perfect as long as it in good condition and it has
its original box....I have lots to trade in N scale not just old Atlas

Hi all,

The photo uploads to this group are now moderated which means a moderator (me) must approve them first.

This is in response to my observation of certain Yahoos! (if you'll pardon the expression) joining lists for the sole purpose of selling stuff. I moderate messages of new members to keep those out but I had to close that "loophole".

Please keep posting A1G related content and I will approve as soon as I can. I have no travel planned for a while so approvals should be pretty quick.

After looking at the 1966 catalog and the cover box of the early Atlas train sets. Its seem as no one knew how an American passenger train was put together. For the most part they placed the baggage, mail or dorm in the middle of the train. I still love the art work of the E8 and heavyweights flying under the bridge with a IHB 0-8-0 overhead.
