December 2019 ZL6YOTA
2
Hi all, As you know, December is approaching fast, and with it the December YOTA Activity Month. This is not a competition, but an activity month where the goal is to show that there is youth in Amateur Radio. Young operators will be activating call signs with the YOTA suffix all over the world. In New Zealand, we will all be using ZL6YOTA. Contacts are possible in all frequencies and modes (including local repeater contacts etc), we just need to make sure that only one signal per band and mode is active at any time. To do this, we used a google spreadsheet for the 2018 activity which was a good solution. Everyone who wants to participate has to use a logging program since we need to merge and upload the logs. If you are keen please share your interest with me and we'll provide you with more information (access to the spreadsheet etc). You can participate from home, a friends station or you are more than welcome to operate from ZM4T, either remotely or on site. 73 Xenia Berger

WWROF TO SUPPORT YOTA 2020 CAMP Posted on 14-November-2019 by Teri Grizer Fredricksburg, TX – November 14, 2019 – The World Wide Radio Operators Foundation, Inc. (WWROF) has issued a grant to the organizers of Youth on the Air (YOTA) in IARU region 2, to support a summer camp for licensed amateur radio operators ages 15 through 25. YOTA 2020 Camp will take place June 21 through June 26, 2020 at the National Voice of America Museum of Broadcasting in West Chester Township (North Cincinnati), Ohio, according to an announcement yesterday on Ham Nation. WWROF Chairman Tim Duffy, K3LR, explains, “We’re glad for this opportunity to support a pilot project that will become the first of a series of much needed camps held at various sites throughout the Americas. Supporting YOTA 2020 Camp is consistent with WWROF’s mission, by helping to improve the operating skills of those who are new to ham radio.” To learn more about YOTA 2020 Camp, watch the archived episode of Ham Nation, or visit the YOTA website. About WWROF The World Wide Radio Operators Foundation is a non-profit, donor-supported organization dedicated to improving the skills and fun of amateur radio operators around the world by utilizing education, competition, advancement of technology and scientific research, promoting international friendship and goodwill. Contest Participation from ZM4T (Hawkes Bay)
20
Hi Youngsters! Is there any interest between you to operate a contest as a youth team from ZM4T? The station ZM4T is in Hawkes Bay, just south of Napier/Hastings (near Havelock North) and we can arrange pick up/drop you off from Napier airport or any of the bus stations in Napier/Hastings. Since not many of you operate CW I guess a SSB contest would be the best option. My proposal is CQ WPX SSB at the end of March (30/31). It is worldwide 48 hour contest and you could operate as a multi-operator team either M/S or M/2 depending how many of you are coming. Check out the rules here: https://cqwpx.com/rules.htm The little problem with international 48 hour contests is, that they start local Saturday 1 pm and go until our local Monday around 1 pm. So if you can't take off on Monday you may have to cut short the contest and leave earlier. That would be no problem. I think we have at least 5 candidates within reach, Ben & Casper from Wellington as well as Jaidyn, Alice and Xenia who are already in Hawkes Bay. Alice and Xenia are regular contest operators at ZM4T and know the station and facilities. They can also mentor regarding efficient operating style in a contest if needed. Please reply through this thread and indicate if there is a general interest to operate a contest from ZM4T and if the CQ WPX SSB contest at the end of March is possible for you. 73 Holger, ZL3IO (host of ZM4T)

NZART Conference New Plymouth
Hi all, Last weekend Jaidyn and I attended the NZART conference in New Plymouth. We advertised our youth group, met the new and old council members as well as many other kiwi hams. Many people were very interested in our activities and were keen to support youth in ham radio. Overall, it was a really fun and interesting weekend - perhaps Jaidyn can share some of his impressions as well. We also tried to find more youth to join us here since there must surely be more licensed young hams in NZ. If anyone else is interested in going to Bulgaria for the youth camp, I just received an email saying they had 10 more spots available due to people pulling out, so please contact me ASAP. We would need to organize something about funding for flights and booking them as soon as we can since the camp is in August. 73 Xenia ZL4YL

Intro
Hey all, Name's Sam and I currently live in Cambridge but will be moving soon to Te Awamutu. I don't have a license yet but am almost ready to take the test and hoping to get on HF ASAP. My current equipment consists of a Baofeng UV-5R and GT3-TP, RTL-SDR v3, Anytone SMART 10m, Baojie BJ-318, Uniden UBC92XLT and BCD996XT All but the 92XLT and RTL-SDR live in my car which is where I operate from. I operate portable SWL with a 20m EFHW wire antenna that I run barefoot through trees. Looking forward to getting on the air and experimenting. Cheers, Sam

Makerfaire 2019 (Ham radio setup)
4
Hi all, First time posting to this Google group but my name this way is Benjamin not to be confused with Ben white, ZL4BEN even though I have the alternate call to him ZL1BEN. I'm also based in Wellington and myself and Phill Dodds are the two in charge of organising this year's Wellington Maker Faire, which is on the 20th of October this year. We are looking at having some more youth involved as last year had plenty of older people but was lacking in the younger generations, and as everyone here will understand New Zealand's Ham Radio community is at somewhat of a tipping point in terms of member count. Anyways if any of you live close to the Wellington area or want to fly down for a day and or know younger hams < 35y/o. Please get in touch on here or via the NZART Facebook group!! World Amateur Radio Day
World Amateur Radio Day is coming soon Every April 18, radio amateurs worldwide take to the airwaves in celebration of World Amateur Radio Day. It was on this day in 1925 that the International Amateur Radio Union was formed in Paris. Amateur Radio experimenters were the first to discover that the short wave spectrum — far from being a wasteland — could support worldwide propagation. In the rush to use these shorter wavelengths, Amateur Radio was “in grave danger of being pushed aside,” the IARU’s history has noted. Amateur Radio pioneers met in Paris in 1925 and created the IARU to support Amateur Radio worldwide. Today, Amateur Radio is more popular than ever, with more than 3,000,000 licensed operators! Worldwide: The World Radio Network and the World Friendship Net will be participating in World Amateur Radio Day 2019. For the second time in a row, the special event call sign W2W has been secured for this event. As well there will be a commemorative special event "WORLD AMATEUR RADIO DAY 2019" QSL Card. They will have a 12 hour net with 10 different net controllers from all over the world. Please join them as we celebrate amateur radio all around the world on 18 April (19th April for nz - Good Friday ) at 16:00 UTC ( 4am nz) via echolink on the "World" Conference server IRLP 9251 and for the first time on Allstar Node #47620 - World Conference Hub Hope to hear you on air and work this special event station :) ?? It going to be loads of fun Thomas ZL3TOM http://tiny.cc/zl3tom ;

YOTA Camp Bulgaria 11th-17th August, 2019
12
The ninth Youngsters On The Air ( *YOTA* ( https://www.ham-yota.com/ ) ) summer camp will be held in Bulgaria, with the Bulgarian Federation of Radioamateurs (BFRA) hosting the event. “In this YOTA Camp, we will be continuing with our train-the-trainer program, which will be the main theme of the week,” IARU Region 1 Youth Working Group Chair Lisa Leenders, PA2LS, said in *announcing* ( https://www.iaru-r1.org/index.php/general/1829-call-for-application-youngsters-on-the-air-bulgaria-2019 ) the annual event. “Participants will be working on the future of Amateur Radio and will be involved in workshops where they gain skills to start similar Amateur Radio youth events back home. With this, we are aiming to create a snowball effect [to inspire] more and more YOTA events all over the world. This also allows other youngsters and newcomers to enjoy Amateur Radio.” Leenders said time will be set aside for the campers to enjoy Amateur Radio and to become acquainted with Bulgaria. “Previous events have shown that all participants [have] an unforgettable week, where many new friendships are started,” she said. While primarily an IARU Region 1 event, young radio amateurs from the US in Region 2 and Region 3 also have attended. “We are open for teams outside Region 1,” Leenders told ARRL. “Depending on the number of applications we receive, we will decide how many participants outside the region we can support.” Individual IARU member-societies select candidates aged 15 to 25 for the summer camp, which will take place August 11 – 17 near the Bulgarian capital city of Sofia. Interested member societies should complete the *registration form* ( https://goo.gl/forms/EzejaqnTiTAYvht83 ) by February 1. There is a limit of 80 participants. — Thanks to I ARU Region 1 Youth Working Group Chair Lisa Leenders, PA2LS, via IARU Region 1 news

ZL6YOTA activity in December 2018
23
Hi all, I came across a US pendant to the www.ham-yota.org page. The page is called https://yarc.world/ YARC stands for “Young Amateur Radio Club”. If you’re interested you can register there. They do a contest on the 1st December and you even can win money here if you win a class. https://yarc.world/events/contests/2018/09/18/winter-qso-party-2018/ Check out how many countries have announced to participate in YOTA activity in December and what their call signs will be https://events.ham-yota.com/ Most are from Africa and Europe. I think there is little chance to work those African stations but we should be able to work some of the European ones. Would you mind introducing yourself in the “Introduction” thread? /g/ZL6YOTA/topic/introduction/28088685?p=,,,20,0,0,0::recentpostdate%2Fsticky,,,20,2,0,28088685 Since we’ve never met it would be nice to learn about each other a bit more. Please, please, please! As for the preparation for our December activity as ZL6YOTA: By now you all should have access to the google spreadsheet to claim an operating spot. Are there any questions how to use the spreadsheet? Do we want to share a list with participants, e-mail addresses and telephone numbers in case we need to contact someone? I don’t think we want to add this to the spreadsheet but if you send me your details in a personal mail I’ll send a list out to everybody as separate mail. Everyone please create a log as ZL6YOTA with the log book program of your choice. - Ensure you sign on as an operator with your own personal callsign. - Enter a few fake QSO’s. - Create an ADIF file and send this to me by email. I need to test the log merging before we go live and need a dummy log from each of you!!! I contacted a number of QSL card printers and got, from two different printers, 1000 Photo QSL’s each sponsored. We need to design one or two QSL cards! @ZL4BEN: Hi Ben, I think you’re very active in FT8. Are you able to check if the Release Candidate 2 of FT8 works for our callsign length? If I’m not mistaken FT8 normally accepts only 6 digit calls. @Jaidyn, ZL2MRLP: Do you know Rob, ZL2US, in Pakowhai? He is retired, within bicycle reach for you and has a very good station (multiple beams and legal power). I’m sure we could arrange a few appointments for you to operate from his place on HF. You (or actually anybody who wants to) are also most welcome to come to our place near Waimarama. However, I assume we need to organise the logistics and you may have to stay overnight. My parents work in Napier so here is an option to get a ride. @Alice: Do you want to have a radio/antenna at your place or come to our place to operate? Summary: - INTRODUCE YOURSELF! - SEND ME AN ADIF FILE FOR A ZL6YOTA LOG WITH YOU SHOWN AS THE OPERATOR! That’s it for today 73 Xenia, ZL4YL

Introduction
5
Hey all, I thought we could all go around and introduce ourselves so we can get to know each other a little better. Make sure to include - Your name - Your station set up - Where you live - How you got into Amateur Radio - What you do - Whether you use a logging program (and which one) - What modes you can do, and your preferred ones. I'll start; My name is Xenia Berger, I am a year 12 student at high school from Hawke's Bay. I can do CW, Phone, RTTY and FT8 but would prefer to do CW or RTTY. I live at the ZM4T contest station so we have quite a good set up with a vertical for 160 m, a four square for 80 m and a couple of different yagis for 40 m-10 m. We have two K3 radios (Elecraft) and amps, which can be used as a multi 2 station, so both radios can send at the same time. We should be able to use one station here remotely. So if any of you want to radio from here (without actually coming here) we can sort that out. We know alot of active hams in NZ so we could probably find someone near you whose station you could use as an alternative. We are also more than happy to have you radio from here (ZM4T station) for a few days if you can arrange to come here. My dad introduced me (and my entire family) to Amateur Radio, so we all have licenses. I got my license in September 2015 and have made over 17 000 QSO's (Nov. 2018); the majority of which are made during contests as we are very active contesters. We either use a logging program called 'UCXlog' made by DL7UCX, or a logging program called 'N1MM'. Both are very good and we would be able to help you out if had any trouble as we are familiar with it. BTW with 'we' I mean my dad and I. If you do not use a logging program yet I would suggest you use N1MM as it is easy to use and is capable of merging logs/sending adif files of your logs. That's it from me today, please introduce yourselves too so we can get to know the team. 73 Xenia ZL4YL

Introduction, FT8 and Dummy logs
2
Hi all. Introduction: Hi, I'm Ben. I am 17 and just graduated high school. I have been licenced since I was 14 and hold the calls ZL4BEN and Zl2APRS. I am interested in radios, computers and yacht racing(hoping to be able to do a bit of /mm stuff as the bands improve over summer). Main QTH is in Wellington. I was first introduced to the idea of ham radio when I got to play with the satellite ground station in Bletchley Park, came home from the UK and started working twards getting my licence almost immediately. My current station is less than Ideal as most of my gear I have brought broken and got into a somewhat working state. My main radio is a Kenwood TS430s and antennas are various dipoles at about 10-12m elevation. Because of less than ideal antennas and what I think is a sensitivity issue with my radio I mainly stick to digital modes. FT8: You are correct Xenia, most of my contacts are digital/ft8/jt65. Am I allowed to make one contact before the 1st of December to test the longer call? Dummy Log: Please find attached a dummy log from N1MM. Cheers and 73, Ben, ZL4BEN
