Wire harness help

I understand the gentleman who was making the cable harness for the module has moved on
in this endevor. Does anyone have a list for part numbers for the shells and power connector
shell from digikey, mouser or the like.

Thanks

stu

Stu:

There has been a short delay.....

I always thought when you retired from a company, you just filled out a few
forms and headed through the doors to retirement.

Oh no.

For the last 4 weeks I've worked harder, and longer hours, than ever at the
office. "You've got to finish this and that project before you leave" ...or
worse..."here's another special project we'd like to have you do before you
leave."

Well, Friday is my last day. So I'll have more train time very shortly.

Cables? I have over $800 in "stuff" for cable assemblies on hand. From the
very start, it was never my intention to make any profit ...and I never
did....and won't start now. It was just a z-friendly effort to help model train
people find parts they probably didn't know where to buy.

Actually, any ZBT cable can be built up with one stop at Radio Shack (or Dick
Smith). But you probably wouldn't like the price much as mine. I've been
buying in multiples of 100 (or more) and with only one shipping charge to your
door it was cheaper to get the stuff from me.

Its five years of soldering that was my undoing. Too many "F" letters. What
started out as Fun and a Favor turned into a Factory operation. In my N
scale days, everyone knew how to solder, but not so in Z as I found out. Charging
5 bucks per hour for my soldering time didn't help much either (all my own
train time was spent soldering for others because I priced my time too cheap).
But after two miles (4.7 kilometers) of soldered cables and five years, I just
got tired. Sorry. I've got some modules I'm dying to build in the days
ahead.

What I plan to do is to get the entire family involved in a "bagging"
operation and make up bagged "sets of parts" available (at cost) in a number of
ways/outlets complete with printed instructions. And hope to at least get most of
my parts costs out.

But the extra workload at the office derailed me and that goal.

Patience, please. One of my goals is to publish all my parts sources so
anyone can get the same components I buy, directly, at the "one each" price. I'm
pretty careful and picky on what I've been buying to insure zero problems when
it all plugs together, and over years of use.

Some CZM members are making their first modules and need wiring
harneses. Are the kits with instructions still available for
purchase?

Hi,

Jeff, if you can make 10 within 2 weeks, the Tri-State Z Scalers will buy them <seriously>. We need them for our Dec. meet and for a major train show in Jan.

If not, I plan to order parts tomorrow (Tues. or Wed.) for the Tri-State Z Scalers, I'd be happy to order enough parts for CZM as well (less wire, wire is heavy to ship) as long as you let me know ASAP and I'll ship your parts at cost + acual shipping. I plan to get the 18ga speaker wire from Walmart, $8.96/100'. Only differance is it is both copper/gold color with a white stripe on one wire. Can still use the ZBT instructions, just think gold and white stripe when assembling instead of gold and silver. This seems to be the best price without buying 1000's of ft. at a time. The parts will not be as cheap as Bill K's., as I'm not buying by the 100 or 1000 parts at a time.

Having spoke to Bill K. recently, I don't think we can get cables/kits from him at this time. It's not that he doesn't want to help us, he just can't at this time. If you'll notice on the zbendtrack website, the link to cables is still there, but the link doesn't work anymore. Luckily I have printed out instructions on how to assemble them that I can copy for you. I also have a complete parts list as well. I just can't help with end & power cables yet, just thru module wiring at this point. I'm not offering to assemble cables for you now, just get the parts.

LMK, I actually hope you can help Jeff, if not, my offer is open for the CZM. All Z BeZt,

There's no way I can make 10 before then. I just got back from Europe Monday nite, have to finish my modules for a test run this weekend, go see my Mom (just out of Psych ward) and finish up for the show on Xgiving weekend. Week end after, I have to go to the San Diego show but since I am driving, that's Thursday 1/30 - Monday 2/4.

Maybe after. Bill's PC bds are the best way to go. If you can at least get the PC bds, the connectors, wire and soldering are easy. The local surplus place has the red/black zip cord which I prefer over Bill's clear speaker wire (one copper, one tinned wire visible thru clear jacket).

You are so right about the wire. We can get that here for cheap. We
just don't have a good source for the parts and could use some group
purchase to reduce cost and make sure we get the right things. Also,
if someone could send us a copy of the instructions. I was
disapointed to see that all those nice photos and instructions were
not working on the website.

CZM could use 6 harness kits for the straight through modules. We
also want 1 for an end module eventually.

Thanks, Robin

MIchael,
I need some harness kits also if it isn't too late. I believe Brad says
that I actually need 1 1/2 straight through kits per T module and I have two
T's in the making. I also need an end module harness. So I guess I need 3
straight through and one end harness kit. Can do?
Loren

PS. I have the instructions for the harness kits Robin, so I'll send you a
copy, OK?

did....and won't start now. It was just a z-friendly effort to
help model train
people find parts they probably didn't know where to buy.

Actually, any ZBT cable can be built up with one stop at Radio
Shack (or Dick
Smith). But you probably wouldn't like the price much as mine.
I've been
buying in multiples of 100 (or more) and with only one shipping
charge to your
door it was cheaper to get the stuff from me.

Its five years of soldering that was my undoing. Too many "F"
letters. What
started out as Fun and a Favor turned into a Factory operation.
In
my N
scale days, everyone knew how to solder, but not so in Z as I
found
out. Charging
5 bucks per hour for my soldering time didn't help much either
(all
my own
train time was spent soldering for others because I priced my
time
too cheap).
But after two miles (4.7 kilometers) of soldered cables and five
years, I just
got tired. Sorry. I've got some modules I'm dying to build in the
days
ahead.

What I plan to do is to get the entire family involved in
a "bagging"
operation and make up bagged "sets of parts" available (at cost)
in
a number of
ways/outlets complete with printed instructions. And hope to at
least get most of
my parts costs out.

But the extra workload at the office derailed me and that goal.

Patience, please. One of my goals is to publish all my parts
sources so
anyone can get the same components I buy, directly, at the "one
each" price. I'm
pretty careful and picky on what I've been buying to insure zero
problems when
it all plugs together, and over years of use.

Putting them together is our responsibility. I just would appreciate

be getting to a larger number of parts to order and maybe a benefit

Wish me luck--I bought 8 female, 8 male DB25 wire-wrap
plugs from HSC this past weekend, and will be upstairs tonight
wiring them into cables for the modules. Hopefully I'll have some
still unburned fingers come this weekend. :D

Tracks are laid, picked up ballast on Sunday from Rob, will get
some ballast down (avoiding the switches of course!), and will
get at least some rudimentary scenery down. But my running
before was all with clip leads on the rails themselves, so I need
to get the wiring taken care of before I start on the scenery end
of things. ^_^;

The D 25 pin connectors are about $0.60 each at the surplus store: Halted
Specialties in Santa Clara (and 2 other local regional locations but SC has
the largest inventory). All new.

Connectors:

25-gen006.htm
(for the Female). Click D Sub in the title to return to the D-Sub
folder, go down two for the Male)
You need 2 males. 2 females per thru module, 1 male and 1 female for end
modules.

Wire:

ed--1000--2445-1000-wir104.htm
You can get by the foot or shorter roll. (This is good stuff, not the
crap from Rat Schack, theirs melts really easy)
You need 3 lengths per connector: Inner, Outer and Acc, about 12" - 18"
each if you put terminal strips on each end.
You need 4 connectors on a thru module, X 3 wire pairs = 12 lengths x
12" - 18" or 12 - 18 feet per thru module, just for the connectors.

You also need to bus from one end to the other. Power is carried thru
out the modules with these bus wires, not the track ! 3 pairs per side = 6
lengths times say 4' = another 24 feet.

Terminal strips to "splice each connector to the bus: One 6 pin per
connector.
Halted:

So far so good on the ones I'm cranking out. Do we follow the
wiring exactly as laid out in the Z-Bend_Track_Manual_2004.pdf
document, or are there any variations I should be aware of when
wiring up the module? I've made up 3 double-ended connectors,
one for my mini-turnaround, one for the balloon module, and one
for feeding power into the modules. I just wanted to make sure
it's OK to follow the spec exactly as it's laid out, including the
emergency power-off feeders on pins 20 and 21...

Thanks!

Matt

For the last 4 weeks I've worked harder, and longer hours, than
ever at the
office. "You've got to finish this and that project before you
leave" ...or
worse..."here' s another special project we'd like to have you do
before you
leave."

Well, Friday is my last day. So I'll have more train time very
shortly.

Cables? I have over $800 in "stuff" for cable assemblies on hand.
From the
very start, it was never my intention to make any profit ...and I
never
did....and won't start now.

In
my N
scale days, everyone knew how to solder, but not so in Z as I found
out. Charging
5 bucks per hour for my soldering time didn't help much either (all
my own
train time was spent soldering for others because I priced my time
too cheap).
But after two miles (4.7 kilometers) of soldered cables and five
years, I just
got tired. Sorry. I've got some modules I'm dying to build in the
days
ahead.

What I plan to do is to get the entire family involved in
a "bagging"
operation and make up bagged "sets of parts" available (at cost) in
a number of
ways/outlets complete with printed instructions.

I understand the gentleman who was making the cable harness for
the module
has moved on
in this endevor. Does anyone have a list for part numbers for the
shells and
power connector
shell from digikey, mouser or the like.

There are detailed instructions available beyond the 2004 manual. They were posted with the cable kits, but luckily I printed them out before they were taken off the net. I'd be happy to snail-mail these if anyone sends thier address off list.

Below is a parts list sent by Bill K. a while back. I placed a order to make 10 sets of wiring harnesses last night. All the parts came from , except the 18ga wire, which I got 600' from Walmart for $53.76 + tax, plenty for 10 modules. The All Electronics order totaled $85.25 for everything else including shipping. So under $150 you can get enough parts & wire for 10 modules.

From All Electronics, prices are for 10 or more parts in most cases:

SKU DESCRIPTION QTY PRICE

DB-25H DB25 HOOD 40PCS $0.29/EA
DB-25S D-SUB CONNECTOR, 25PIN FEMALE 20PCS $0.55/EA
DB-25P D-SUB CONNECTOR, 25 PIN MALE 20PCS $0.50/EA
SLT-38 3/8" DIA. SPLIT LOOM TUBING 42FT $0.15/FT
CSI-3 INSULATED STAPLE 0.3" DIA. (BOX/100) 2 $3.50/BOX
LCL-2 1/2" DIA. CUSHIONED LOOP CLAMP 40 $0.20/EA
TB-17 17.5 AMP FEED-THROUGH TERM STRIP 10 $1.55/EA
HUG-14B 1/4" HS TUBE, BLACK, 4' PIECE 1 $1.90/EA
HUG-14R 1/4" HS TUBE, RED, 4' PIECE 1 $1.90/EA
HUG-14W 1/4" HS TUBE, WHITE, 4' PIECE 1 $1.90/EA
HUG-34B 3/4" HS TUBE, BLACK, 4' PEICE 1 $3.15/EA

I hope this helps people get started making thier own wiring harnesses.

I plan to offer "kits" for $15 each +actual shipping. I'll "assemble" them for you for an additional $20 each (as I have time, I'm probably going to have to assemble them for all the Tri-State Z Scalers first). I will also include assembly & installation instructions where appropriate.

Hi,

Jeff, if you can make 10 within 2 weeks, the Tri-State Z Scalers will buy them .

All Z BeZt,

I posted the parts list, prices, etc. for All Electronics <> , a supplier Bill K. used. For a end module, instead of the single male/female connector, you could just use separate ones wired accordingly and just plug the wires into a single 6 terminal block under the module. This reduces the parts needing to be gathered. I don't have the double hoods or the PCB's for end or power harnesses, or the instructions for them, just for the thru modules.

If you'd prefer me to order the parts for you and have them shipped directly to you, just send a check for $85.25, enough parts for 10 thru module harnesses. You'll have to separate the parts into kits yourself for your various members. I believe I'll have enough for 3 extra kits out of my latest order if you'd like them @ $15/kit, including wire + actual shipping, I "think" it would fit into a flat rate priority mail box. LMK, otherwise I'll place another order for next week to sell just kits to you.

Sounds fine. You figured out the power tap too :) Pin 20-21 are for the EMO, designed for shows but more for NTS. Since we use DCC, we have the remote EMO. Wiring specs that we use are: Inner, Outer and ACC. For module extensions based on large or multiple spurs or turnouts using blocks, I supply the Raw full DCC on pins 22-23. This way you get the full 5 Amps compared to the 0.5A for the Inner track feed. Pins 24-25 you can use for intermodule stuff. These 4 pins (21-25) are user defined. Since Rob does have the 22-23 wiring yet, you won't see the Wye's 5 Amp raw feed. Nic's module wiring includes this so if you connected to his module, you would have it to feed an electronic circuit breaker to feed you module's Inner mainline, AutoReverser and spurs. Use an EB3 from NCE. But for now, just wire it all together but do it to terminal strip so you can add the circuit breaker later.

The flexible point is how to connect each end's connectors. There has to be a bus from one end to the other, each side of the module. This can be from the Z-bend connectors attaching to a terminal strip at each end with the bus running between or, you can put one terminal strip in the middle and connect long Z-bend cables to it along with track feeders. Messy and croweded that way. I use the 12-10 terminal strips from Halted, R&D Electronics or even Rat Schak. These are white, have holes for the wires and are not the classic black terminal strips with the screws that need spade lugs.

Thanks!

All Z BeZt,

Michael,

Where is the list of items for the harnesses posted? Is it in a file
on this forum?

Another question: Some one mentioned that an option would be to buy
an "extension cord" with the pin wiring and just cut the thing in
half. Thereby reducing the time for soldering. Is this possible and
what would be the "extension cord" to buy?

I know these questions illustrate how much I do not understand about
computer, electronic equipment and what pin connector can fit to
another. A case in point: My husband and I want to remove the
wireless router from our computer setup, but are afraid we won't get
the wires pluged back into the correct spaces and then end up with a
non-functioning computer. Sad, silly, but true.

So thank you for your patience and help.

Hi Robin and all,

We had a Tri-State Z Scalers meet today and I did a demonstration of how to install the assembled cables. I assembled 6 sets this week for our local group and 4 kits bagged up. Loren, your kits will be in the mail Monday. More ZBT info. soon. I'm exausted now.

Here we go again, I posted this a couple weeks ago, however updated now...

Below is a parts list sent by Bill K. a while back. I placed a
order to make 10 sets of wiring harnesses last night. All the parts
came from , except the 18ga wire, which I
got 600' from Walmart for $53.76 + tax, plenty for 10 modules. The All
Electronics order totaled $85.25 for everything else including
shipping. So under $150 you can get enough parts & wire for 10 modules.

From All Electronics, prices are for 10 or more parts in most
cases:

SKU DESCRIPTION QTY PRICE

DB-25H DB25 HOOD 40PCS $0.29/EA

DB-25S D-SUB CONNECTOR, 25PIN FEMALE 20PCS $0.55/EA

DB-25P D-SUB CONNECTOR, 25 PIN MALE 20PCS $0.50/EA

SLT-38 3/8" DIA. SPLIT LOOM TUBING 42FT $0.15/FT

CSI-3 INSULATED STAPLE 0.3" DIA. (BOX/100) 2 $3.50/BOX

****LCL-2 1/2" DIA. CUSHIONED LOOP CLAMP 40 $0.20/EA (see below)

TB-17 17.5 AMP FEED-THROUGH TERM STRIP 10 $1.55/EA

HUG-14B 1/4" HS TUBE, BLACK, 4' PIECE 1 $1.90/EA

HUG-14R 1/4" HS TUBE, RED, 4' PIECE 1 $1.90/EA

HUG-14W 1/4" HS TUBE, WHITE, 4' PIECE 1 $1.90/EA

****LCL-2 1/2" DIA. CUSHIONED LOOP CLAMP DISCONTINUED, I bought the last 9 they had left. Home Depot sells the same clamps for $1.25 for a 2pk, they also sell plastic clamps that will work as well, I think for $1.75 for a 12pk.

Besides the parts above you will also need and not included in the kits I provide, per kit:

4pcs. #4 x 1/2" screws (for the terminal blocks)

4pcs. #10 x 1/2" screws (for the cable clamps)

4 sets of 3/4" - 1" square velcro (to hold the cables in place when in transit)

Robin,

The extension cord someone must have referenced is likely a computer parallel printer port cable which is 25 pins. However, they are too small of a conductor for the power feeds, often only 30 gauge or smaller, only enough for <<1 Amp.

You should have good cables for the module interconnects so distributed power to further modules is not comprimised. But you can use small conductor wire feeders from this bus (e.g. either end of the module where these Z-bend cables terminate) to the track. #26 is more than enough for track feeders but #22 is recomended anyway, a common hook-up wire size.

I need some harness kits also if it isn't too late. I believe Brad
says
that I actually need 1 1/2 straight through kits per T module and I
have two
T's in the making. I also need an end module harness. So I guess I
need 3
straight through and one end harness kit. Can do?
Loren

PS. I have the instructions for the harness kits Robin, so I'll
send you a
copy, OK?

You are so right about the wire. We can get that here for cheap. We
just don't have a good source for the parts and could use some group
purchase to reduce cost and make sure we get the right things. Also,
if someone could send us a copy of the instructions. I was
disapointed to see that all those nice photos and instructions were
not working on the website.

CZM could use 6 harness kits for the straight through modules. We
also want 1 for an end module eventually.

Thanks, Robin

Hi,

Jeff, if you can make 10 within 2 weeks, the Tri-State Z Scalers
will buy them <seriously>. We need them for our Dec. meet and for a
major train show in Jan.

If not, I plan to order parts tomorrow (Tues. or Wed.) for the
Tri-State Z Scalers, I'd be happy to order enough parts for CZM as
well (less wire, wire is heavy to ship) as long as you let me know
ASAP and I'll ship your parts at cost + acual shipping. I plan to
get
the 18ga speaker wire from Walmart, $8.96/100'. Only differance is
it
is both copper/gold color with a white stripe on one wire. Can still
use the ZBT instructions, just think gold and white stripe when
assembling instead of gold and silver. This seems to be the best
price without buying 1000's of ft. at a time. The parts will not be
as cheap as Bill K's., as I'm not buying by the 100 or 1000 parts at
a time.

Having spoke to Bill K. recently, I don't think we can get
cables/kits from him at this time. It's not that he doesn't want to
help us, he just can't at this time. If you'll notice on the
zbendtrack website, the link to cables is still there, but the link
doesn't work anymore. Luckily I have printed out instructions on how
to assemble them that I can copy for you. I also have a complete
parts list as well. I just can't help with end & power cables yet,
just thru module wiring at this point. I'm not offering to assemble
cables for you now, just get the parts.

LMK, I actually hope you can help Jeff, if not, my offer is open
for the CZM. All Z BeZt,

Some CZM members are making their first modules and need wiring
harneses. Are the kits with instructions still available for
purchase?

Thanks,
Robin

There has been a short delay.....

I always thought when you retired from a company, you just
filled
out a few
forms and headed through the doors to retirement.

Oh no.

For the last 4 weeks I've worked harder, and longer hours, than
ever at the
office. "You've got to finish this and that project before you
leave" ...or
worse..."here' s another special project we'd like to have you
do
before you
leave."

Well, Friday is my last day. So I'll have more train time very
shortly.

Cables? I have over $800 in "stuff" for cable assemblies on
hand.
From the
very start, it was never my intention to make any profit ...and
I
never
did....and won't start now.

(all
my own
train time was spent soldering for others because I priced my
time
too cheap).
But after two miles (4.7 kilometers) of soldered cables and five
years, I just
got tired. Sorry. I've got some modules I'm dying to build in
the
days

I understand the gentleman who was making the cable harness
for
the module
has moved on
in this endevor. Does anyone have a list for part numbers for
the
shells and
power connector
shell from digikey, mouser or the like.
