"Tales from the Mother Lode": Devi (Hybrid Human/Wolf), Ace Inamura (Human), Villia Amalur (chameleon-type), Dale Voit (Human)

Things had changed when the Alliance had decided to go into genetic enhancements. Though not very successful there had been some that went beyond expectations. Canines, felines, lizards and one that was buried so deep, even after the war, was never found.?
? ?What had ended the war between the resistance and the Alliance was the finding of Wormhole 42 (WH-42). Once it was discovered there was a mad rush to see who would see what was on the other side. The Alliance won that race and has been the one to blame for the arrival of the?Dhigra. A war like race that follows the Alliance back through the wormhole. The Dhigra ravaged the outer rim. They were stopped when the eventually found their way into the inner world's where a massive fleet, comprised of both Alliance and resistance ships, rallied to take out the Dhigra.?
? ?It has been some years now since the Dhigra showed up in our solar system. The Alliance and resistance have slowly started to drift back to grumbling about each other. There are rumors of the resistance building up again. It is also during this time that the hybrids had been given the right to live. Those that were left, the majority moved to the outer rim. This is were Devi was born.?

? ?Devi had had enough of working for someone else. Her last job had put a bad taste in her mouth so she decided to strike out on her own. So to speak. She had come to Harvey because she knew of a place where she could find a ship. Honest Athena's Boneyard. Those that knew, knew that?Honest Athena's always had a gem somewhere in her Boneyard. Devi had put out, through the usual channels, that she was looking for a crew for possible jobs. So here Devi sat in the Amber Dragon sipping on a nice ice cold milk.?

(Enter Ace Inamura)

Nowhere Man.? It was a song popular in the pre-Expansion era.? An old man Ace knew as a kid used to sing it a lot.

"Nowhere Man" was a song about a screw-up.? He was holed up by himself, making schemes, and generally getting nowhere.? He lived in an imaginary world called Nowhere-Land.? It described Ace to a tee, the way he had been living for the past few years¡ªall alone, no one to share the Game with, locked up with dreams of old.

There was a time for everything, and for Ace Inamura, the time to leave Nowhere Land was today.? It wasn't that staying in the realm of hacking wasn't lucrative, but the effort and risk was¡underwhelming.? And he wasn't any closer to avenging his brothers in arms.? All his contacts in the USSA had gone doggo.? Even his underworld contacts in the Mother Lode were skittish of late.

It was time to engage the world again, and the email from Devi offered that chance.? On the surface, meeting on Harvey was a bit odd, but if you wanted to find yourself a ship under the radar, there were few places better than this out-of-the-way moon¡at least that's what he assumed, considering this bar was a short hop away from Honest Athena's.

He walked up to the bar, and ordered warm saki¡ªhis first in a long time.? He cast a glance sideways to a familiar wolf hybrid.? "Long time, no see."

(Enter Dale)

Dale was tired. The scooter that had dropped him off was a relic. He was stiff and sore from the flight. It hadn¡¯t been cheap. He ordered a stiff drink and huddled down in a dark corner to wait.

There had been a freighter in the main dock. They¡¯d needed his services. It was just what he was looking for. There was only one problem, the captain was Avery Peck. His reputation had gotten around the spheres and it wasn¡¯t good. Maybe he could have taken the job. It would have been likely he never had to even come into contact with the ill-mannered Captain. Another job had crossed the notice list, and he thought it wise to check it out. He could always go back to Peck.

The crowd was light with mostly mechanics and dusters. He didn¡¯t like landers much. They didn¡¯t think or act like spacers. Everything had to be right now. They were very impatient. Something he was very good at.

His telecom beeped. The contact had entered the bar. No, they were already in the bar but had initiated the contact trace. He looked around the room. It wouldn¡¯t be a lander. He spotted the FemCat. She was looking right at him.

He felt the hairs rise on the back of his neck. She was the contact. He gave her a two finger salute. He was about to get up when a caution flag crossed his screen.

He studied the notice. ¡®Until further notice all outbound flights are grounded. You will be notified when departures are permitted.¡¯

¡°Vercet Lute!¡° Dale said under his breath. What was going on now? He looked back up at the FemCat. She seemed preoccupied.

He wandered over to her seat. ¡°Are you looking for a crew?¡° He felt silly asking a FemCat this straight forward question for some idiotic reason.

She looked him up and down for a moment, took in his scent. "Straight to the point. I like that." She looked to the Frame (AI) behind the bar. It was an old Frame, one of the very early models. Dale nodded to the pair, his pale face, dark eyes, a hint of wrinkles, an old man in the body of a kid.?

He studied both with a discerning gaze. These were brawlers, a kinship from the past now rejoined, trusted. That was a good sign and it put him at ease. A happy boat was a safe boat.

When they moved to his table he felt relieved.? He was in, it was how it went for spacers. You didn¡¯t ask many questions or prod for experience when you¡¯d been in the black. You could see it in the eyes and in the body movements. Fit as fiddles both of them. He¡¯d erred on the first take, she was no FemCat, better than that. He was just a beast. Both looked like bullets would bounce off them like rain drops or better yet take a uturn in mid-flight and hurry back home. The thought made him chuckle and they both looked at each other with questioning faces.

¡°These G¡¯s are killing me,¡± he said sardonically. He finished his drink in a gulp and leaned forward.?

¡°Dale,¡± he said. He gave them the chest bump with his fist. He felt silly doing so. Seemed that only happened when you were trying to get on a new gig.?

He laid his com down where they could both see it. It displayed his current qualifiers based on the Lanier testing system. It didn¡¯t show them anything about his character or his flight experience or anything else along those lines. That was something he would have to prove. A trust you can¡¯t buy or justify until the day you do your job and save people¡¯s butts.?

He lifted his glass. Made a show of how his hand slightly trembled. ¡°I was born in space. G¡¯s are a bitch.¡±

Dale

¡°That is a very fast ship,¡± Dale added. ¡°As fast as most shuttles. I¡¯d love to get my hands on one of those. The Valks have inverters duplicated right on top of the Ion battery array. That is serious juice. I¡¯ve heard stories how crews were flattened into jelly when the compensators didn¡¯t correlate or the pilot simply forgot to engage the grav inducers.¡±

He chuckled, ¡°What they were thinking, jumping G¡¯s like a proverbial ping pong ball off a mallet.¡±

He looked from Ace to Devi, ¡°You know I¡¯m the best engineer you are going to find this side of the Worm. Dale followed discreetly a couple paces back. He was nice and didn¡¯t think saying so at this point would get him a merit badge. He¡¯d save any digg at Ace for later when they trusted him and might not just shoot him out the airlock for fun.

This port was new to him. His freighter shuttle had landed at Vicksburg Station, the main Alliance port 8 clicks west. The smells here were just the same as anywhere. He heard the sounds of a riveter off in the distance, BAM! BAM! BAM!. Not unlike the sound a Canister 50 sounded when it blasted through your hull. That only had to happen once. Followed quickly by the sound of silence and empty space.

The area they passed was littered with parts unusable unless you were thinking of building a ship that was a hundred years out of date. Dale being Dale checked them off in his head, one just never knew when something useful might pop up.

? ?Athena shook her head as Devi had agreed to let Villia touch her tale. "Alright now Villia, they are here to look at the Valkyrie. So lets go and see her."?

"Za initial...um...internal...no, inertial dampener blew again!? Zis is the second zis week.? Zere are a couple of more I can scrounge zou.? I zink zat if I replace some of the internal parts, zat zat should do it."? It was then that Villia realized there was someone else besides Athena here, and she turned her face, immediately hopping to as she faced them from the front.

"Ooh, who are zese?? Are zey here to look at ze Valkyries baby?" she curiously asked, one finger to her lower lip as she examined them.? The two men seemed human enough, at least as human as Athena, but the third was a lady and of an anthropomorphic lupus species.? Villia's eyes lit up when she noticed the female's fluffy tail, trembling at the desire to suddenly touch it.? "Is zat...are you a wolf?? Ooooh, can I touch your tail?? Please please please, pretty please!"

[Villia]

Bam!? Bam!? Bam! rang out in rapid succession again, followed by am electric crackling noise and the overly familiar sound of a rotating, clicky wrench.? Suddenly, a very angry, heavily accented "Laak'naat!" was heard, followed by another BAM! and suddenly there was an explosion which rocketed off the walls, producing a rich, deep metallic timbre.? For a brief moment after, there was naught but silence, punctuated by the protective hum of barrier pylons whose only other indication of being online was the soft blue light which was strongest at each column but faded into nothing the farther it got until it once again become brighter at the next one.? Once Athena rapped on the door, there was another moment of silence and then the door swung open following by a shadowy being whose form took once it entered the light.

What materialized was a short, feminine shape whose stature was so petite that she barely reached Athena's shoulders.? However, short as she was, the thick tail that proceeded past her back more than made up for that, its very tip wrapped around a wrench so big that it may as well be half her size.? The girl's upper half was completely pitch black, fading into quite a colorful lower that wasn't without several grease stains breaking up her outline.? On her face sat a huge pair of goggles that were also tinted with soot, hair in total disarray and just as stained as the rest of her.? From the top of her head, five leaf-like antennas stood firm at attention which were immediately smoothed back as the girl slipped the goggles off her face, revealing a pair of honey yellow eyes whose pupils were very much cat-like in shape.

(Devi - New)

? ?Devi gave Ace a gin at his comment about being a gentleman. She had noticed though that Dale was keeping quiet. Once Athena had banged on the door she stepped back to wait.?
? ?The banging had stopped and it was a few minutes before the door opened. Out stepped a?
short, feminine, petite shape that barely reached Athena's shoulders. As she stepped fully out the she was followed by thick tail that held wrench that was close to half her size. She completely pitch black from the waist up which fading into quite a colorful lower that wasn't without several grease stains breaking up her outline. She had on a huge pair of Google's, her hair was a complete mess. There were five antenna on the top of the girls head, which aid flat as she took off the googles revealing cat like yellow eyes.
? ?Devi had not seen a Reptilian since she was a child. She grinned as the Reppy seemed excited to see Athena. Her smile got bigger as Villia started in about what was wrong with the Valkyrie. This Reppy knew her business. When Villia finally realized someone else was there she asked if they were here to look at the Valkyrie. Though her attention switched to Devi herself when she realized what she was.?
? ?
? ?Athena stood just to the side of Villia and let the Reppy talk. Athena had learned to let Villia say her peace. So when Villia was done she shook heard head and chuckled. "Villia this is Devi. She is the one that I had told you about earlier today. Yes they are here to look at the Valkyrie."?

? ?Devi looked at Villia with a curious look. Did this Reppy really want to touch her tail? If it would help get the Valkyrie then she was willing to let Villia touch it. She gave Villia a nod.?

? ?Athena shook her head as Devi had agreed to let Villia touch her tale. "Alright now Villia, they are here to look at the Valkyrie. So lets go and see her."?

(New Ace)

Well, the little Reppy seemed friendly enough, and Devi didn't seem to mind the requested feeling up of her tail (oh, the jokes he could tell right now).? Athena seemed content enough to continue the tour.? There was a question on his mind, however¡

"So¡I take it this bird isn't sporting all her original parts," he inquired.? "Inertial dampeners among them?"
