Re: The Door Between Two Worlds [Roue and Rabbit] (closed)
开云体育{Roue] His host appears to have understood that Roue was thanking him which was good though it seemed to have flustered the other a bit.? When Rabbit spoke again, it seemed like he was trying to use different languages because the tone and the way he spoke changed, but it didn't help with the verbal understanding so it seemed like this was still a no go.? The fact that the other was able to communicate in so many different languages has impressed Roue as he only held fluency in a couple of languages under his own belt, but again, unless Rabbit was well versed in elvish and/or was taught the lingo by one of his race, that wasn't going to work either.? Despite their current predicament though, their gesticulation seemed to be working on a basic level, so at least they had that going for them. So now that his hunger was resolved, his attention now turned to his own state of being, so when Rabbit started miming washing up, Roue had vigorously nodded as answer.? He felt absolutely filthy.? Not only was he sweaty as a result of all the running around he did, his feverish dreams adding another layer on top of that and he was dirty in several places to boot.? His clothing was a lot more tattered than he originally thought, plucking at the edges of his vest where he previously bled through, though he was amazed that his wound was closed up so quickly.? It wasn't his natural healing, that's for sure.? He wondered if the fidgety youth was the one who healed him but he wasn't quite sure how to ask.? Point to his side and then place a quizzical look onto his face?? It sounds very silly in theory.? So he decided to leave that for later.? The fact was that he was healed though the pain and ache was still there.? Almost like his body didn't yet recognize that he's recovered though that didn't do anything about his tired.? He did feel like he was being lulled to sleep but he wanted to wash up first.? What to do about his clothes though?? He looked back at Rabbit who seemed to pick up on that and mimicked again the actions of sewing up and pointed at the wizard's clothing.? Reaching into the folds of his cape, Roue pulled out a small leather pouch and then placed it into the table, opening it and letting Rabbit peer inside. "<I'd like to pay you for taking care of me,>" he said, gesturing to the insides.? "<And board and room.>"? Since his pursuers seem to be unable to enter this place, at least for now.? Who knows when they would be successful, as any place that he's been at, regardless of how hidden away or fortified it was, has always had its peace breached and so he too couldn't stay here for too long either.? Otherwise, these unassuming people would too be caught up in the storm, so he planned to leave as soon as he regained his strength.? though there was still the matter of his clothing.? He had nothing else on him so that means he'd have to get them mended.? Since it is a service he can utilize or purchase, he too nodded to Rabbit's askance of the same.? So raising one finger, he copycatted Rabbit's gesture of washing up.? Now two fingers, tugging at his clothes and cape, pantomiming the sewing.? Lastly, he raised three fingers and clasped his hands together to use as a pillow, indicating a need to sleep afterwards.? So he gestured again at the pouch full of coins hoping that would be enough. When Rabbit reached for him, he didn't quite understand what he was trying to do.? Did he want to shake his hand in a gesture of goodwill?? The wizard reached out himself, taking Rabbit's hand into his own and gently shook it, smiling.? He pointed with the other to himself and said one word.? "<Roue..Roouuu...> hoping that at least that could be understood as his name. (Rabbit) When the stranger brought out a pouch of coins, opened it and set it on the table, Rabbit picked up a few and examined them. He was a little surprised that many seemed to be actual gold or silver, but the images and writing on them were, once again, nothing he recognized. If there were numbers on them, he couldn't distinguish them from the other strange characters.? Putting them back into the pouch, he looked back to the stranger uncertainly.? It was a good guess that the man was wanting to pay for something, perhaps as a gesture of gratitude for the help he'd been given.? The man's subsequent miming however suggested that he was wanting some services that the club might be able to provide him with.? Trying to explain the finer points of how the club handled such things was clearly beyond their currently limited form of communication however, so Rabbit motioned with his hands and trying to indicate what he hoped the man would understand as wait or not-yet.? "D-don' worry 'bout that for now, mister.? L-later, okay?" The stranger was able to communicate the nature of what he wanted though, in fairly clear terms.? First, he wanted to get cleaned up, then get his clothes cleaned and repaired, and after that, some sleep.? Rabbit nodded.? "Okay.? N-no problem. We can do that." It took Rabbit by surprise when the stranger took his hand and shook it, just when he was resisting an impulse to touch the man's face.? But the man was smiling, so at least he wasn't offended by the half-made attempt.? Then the man was clearly trying to tell Rabbit who he was, or at least what he was called.? "R-row-oooh?" the little vampire ventured, biting his lip.? "Rue?? Roo?"? Uncertain if he was getting it right, he pointed to himself.? "I'm, uhm, R-rabbit." He took a moment to collect himself, then tried again.? "Raa-bit.? Like in, you know, rabbit.? Okay?" "Let's see about gettin' you cleaned up and stuff, sir," the little vampire said, remembering what the stranger had indicated he wanted.? He gestured for the man to stand, then studied him for a moment, trying to assess what size of clothes the man would need while his were being cleaned and repaired.? "I think I can f-find some stuff for you to wear.? Just w-wait here, okay?"? Rabbit mimed for the man to sit and wait, then picked up the tray and now-empty dishes and slipped out of the room, the noise from the main room intruding during the brief time the door was open and then subsiding back into a distant hum once again. A short time later Rabbit returned, this time bearing a set of clothing that he hoped would fit the stranger.? "I kn-know it's not like the fancy stuff you're wearin', but it'll probably do you for n-now."? He gestured towards the door, motioning for the man to follow him. Rabbit stayed close as he led the stranger around the fringes of the crowd until they reached a quieter section that was separate from the main room.? "Folks usually like to use this for, uhm, you know, p-parties 'n stuff," he said, opening a door that was one of several along the short hallway.? "But you can use it to clean up in."? The room was a miniature Roman bath, styled like a small grotto, with a section of wall dotted with niches that held towels and toiletries.? He closed the door and flipped the sign to indicate 'occupied', then set the clothes he'd brought on a nearby shelf. ? "If you'll just, uhm, give me your clothes, sir, I'll take them to where they can be, you know, cl-cleaned and fixed up. And you can get yourself cleaned up while I'm gone."? Rabbit hesitated, fidgeting awkwardly.? "But if'n you, uhm, you know, n-need any help gettin' cleaned up, I can stay and, you know, h-help," he offered, trying not to sound hopeful.? He could feel himself blushing furiously even as he said it, dropping his eyes to keep from openly staring at the stranger, cursing himself.? He was usually more professional than this.? But something about the man was just drawing the little vampire to him.? He was beautiful in an exotic way. And he smelled so damn good.? Especially his blood.? "No, dammit," Rabbit muttered, feeling his fangs starting to emerge. "Not now!" ? It took an effort of will to force them back to normal.? When he felt in control of himself again, he looked back to the stranger.? "If you'll just, uhm, g-give me your clothes 'n stuff, sir, I'll take care of them," he said, miming that the man should undress and give him his clothes.? He then quickly turned his back, keeping his eyes averted as he waited. Tag - Roue |

开云体育- Mikayla - Mikayla gasped as she open the door to find Angus there. At the sight of him, she smiled. She must have been dreaming. There was just no way. “Good morning Angus. ?Everything looks delicious. thank you so much.” She said as she sat down. For a brief moment Mikayla?thought that this was only her second day here and that everything from the previous night was just a big elaborate dream brought on my trauma. After all, all she had experienced was surly too fanciful and farfetched... maybe now she would meet the lord of the manor and learn once and for all what she was doing here. And then his word said told her otherwise. Mikayla blinked up at him. “You mean last night wasn’t a dream. Last night actually. You mean last night actually happened?” she asked, puzzled.? (Angus, The Dragon) "That it did, mistress," Angus said, nodding solemnly. "That it surely did. 'Tis a pity that you left so abruptly though.? You missed seeing what you were able to accomplish." The man waited for Mikayla to begin eating, then continued.? "I apologize if the master failed to explain what he was trying to find out.? He meant no insult or disrespect, no matter how it might have seemed.? The book he was having you read is no ordinary book.? It is a tome of magic castings.? No ordinary person could read it, let alone make it work.? And yet you managed to do both." He regarded the girl admiringly as he spoke, but then sighed.? "At least, it was working until you stopped so suddenly.? That had some rather distressing results." "But the master is much recovered now," Angus went on, cheering up a bit.? "And he very much wishes to see you again. When you feel you're up to it, that is." Tag - Mikayla |
Re: Port Vega: Training Room

(Chord, Imogene, Ireland) ? “So today was an interesting and eventful day,” Chord said as he trying to sound upbeat and reassure the team as he walked into the room with Ireland to his left and Harrison to his right. He was fully prepared to fall back and let Harrison advise the team in the whatever manner saw fit, which was exactly what he said he would do when he finally wore her down enough for her to agree to come to work alongside of him to whip this ragtag bunch into shape.? ?Harrison was just about to speak when Gen cut her off. Chord’s jaw ticked. The taller older man, placed both his hands in his pockets, a move that both Ireland and Brandon would recognize.? “I got this Imogen,” He said to Harrison as he came to stand deceptively casually before Gen, Oh this was not going to be good Ireland thought… “I have never been big on temper tantrum so let me be very clear that neither I nor Ms. Harrison will tolerate them. Thus if you are given to such useless display of emotions this program…we” he gestured to everything around her, “is not a good fit for you. Furthermore, if you found today hard, good. Get used to it. Each new day from here only get harder.? Understand that this is not the Gen saves the world show and judging by the look of your performance today it appears you think it is. And it for damn sure isn’t the pre-game show for any kind of extracurricular activity your raging hormones might have your brain pre-occupied with.” ?His eyes flicked to Kites. “This is not some video game. You are not here to live our some hero fantasy. You are not here to eat and get laid.” He said looking first firmly at Gen and then past her to Kites, and then Kat and finally lingering on Brandon with a disappointed look. “When you walk into this room its real life.? Its test your mettle. Its push your limits. Its learn your weaknesses and test your strengths. It is not play time. Its shut-up, fall back, shut up, stop blaming others for your screw-ups, take some ownership of your mistakes and learn time because what we do here are matters of life and death…for you, your team and civilians. So if today’s activities have your panties in a snit…if you don’t like mine or Harrison’s tactics…the is door right there,” he said stepping aside so that Gen could see there was a clear path to the door with no one blocking her way. “You can walk out and be about you merry way. None the wiser with our well wishes, otherwise understand your role and the program. And as far as Ireland watching…contrary to what you think,” his eyes landing on Kites. “Ireland is your biggest cheerleader and a wonderful judge of character. And since ?the purpose of today’s exercise was to see what we were working with…if you could adapt and learn. If you were trainable and coachable. We were testing your personal abilities and the ability for you to come together and work together as a team in a high pressure, stressful situations, please understand you failed miserable. If Ireland wasn’t watching, you would still be flying around screaming at unbreakable cameras, potential injuring yourself and your team getting your ass handed to you by battle droids. It was because of her that the bots self-destructed. When neither you or Kites conferred with your team lead about the best way to approach the defeat of the bots...she realized that you were giving the bots the opportunity to learn your movements with your solo continuous attacks. When your team lead failed to do just that...lead... Ireland realized someone was going to get seriously hurt. She is A computer wiz, after asking me...begging me in fact to end the test, she hacked into my computer causing them to self destruct. So make sure you thank her.” He said moving to the door. “Oh and effective today. Ireland is your new team lead. “ “Wait...what...”Ireland said...she looked at Brandon.? “Now all of you get washed and changed and eat. i expect anyone who plans to be apart of this team actually be apart of this team to report classroom B first thing tomorrow morning. Good night.” He said gesturing for Imogene to follow him out of the room.? Once Chord and Imogene we’re gone, Ireland turned to Brandon. “I had no idea he was going to do that. I swear.” She said. “I gotta go but we will talk later.” She said leaving out too. ? ? (Brandon) ‘Some hero he turned out to be!’
? He turned to Kat and touched her arm gently before he headed up to his room to clean up.? He was easily…no longer hungry? as he made his way to the living room only to let gravity launch him up into the air and floated into his room as he closed the door and began to make his way to the shower.? (Kat) ? ?Kat listened as the boss talked to them. Well scolded them really. She understood what he was saying though it didn't have to be done this way.? ? ?Tired and still hurting from all that they had done, Kat was ready to hit the showers and sleep. She had started to half listen to what was being said when she caught the words that Brandon was being replaced by Ireland as leader of the team. She looked to Chord, Harrison then Ireland, her eyes shown with a mixture of anger and disappointment. He wasn't giving Brandon a chance. Ireland for her part seemed genuinely shocked. Telling Brandon that they would talk later. ? ?To shocked herself she turned to Brandon when she felt his touch I her arm. Turning to him she put her hand on his. She could see the hurt in his eyes, smell it in his scent. Wanting to say something yet not sure as to what, Brandon turned and left. It had been a very long time for Kat to have felt like she wasn't alone. It was a good feeling. One that she wanted to keep, yet she felt as if this was starting to slip away as she watched Brandon walk through the door.? ? ?She turned to briefly look at the others. Those that could smell her scent could tell that she was angry, hurt and confused. Mia could see it in her eyes. "We do better tomorrow. Right?." Her voice held that anger, hurt and confusion yet the group could tell that her emotions were not directed towards them. She gave them a brief small smile then turned to Kite and placed her had on his arm and gave him a bigger one, then left to go after Brandon.? ? ?She didn't need to try and track him down. His scent was easy to follow. Once in the living room she stopped where he had stood and looked up to his room. It only took her a moment to make her way up to his door. Standing outside she remembered what Chord had said about seeing everyone and what they had done together earlier. She reached up knocked then spoke. "I......I going to get cleaned up. If you would like to talk later. I would like to. After dinner? Let me know......Ok?" She stayed for a second then turned to head to her room. ? 开云体育[Roue] Whatever happened once Roue hit the floor was going to become a big black hole of mystery to him.? He seemed to be stuck between fading in and out of dreams, some nonsensical and others pulling from elements of his memory, an amalgamation of everything that was churning inside his head.? The most pervasive seemed to be a replay of the events that led him to this situation but that was not the worst of it.? Every time he came to the moment where he began casting the ice wall, he tried to remember the assassin's face but try as he might, the face always seemed to appear half in focus.? Then after a few seconds, it would twist into an angry visage of his mother, her lips curved in a most ugly manner, her arm stretching out and then throwing that kunai at him.? His pulse would quicken very rapidly as he turned around and ran in the opposite direction as the ice wall gained in size, presenting this temporary obstacle.? He would keep coming back to this over and over and over again, and it was agonizing.? If there was someone watching from outside all of this, they would see a very pained expression on his face. He felt feverish.? Inside the dreams, he felt his body growing hot and his throat starting to constrict, making him feel like he was choking.? The smoke that he had inhaled was still irritating his lungs.? Sweat started appear across his body, but just as it seemed he was going to alight himself on fire, a strange sort of coolness seemed to awash him from head to toe.? The pained expression that he wore started to relax and a sense of calmness took over instead.? The dreams that replayed like a broken tape had dissipated, instead replaced by this greyish white smoke.? Try as he might clear it, waving his hands in front of him to try and get the air cleared, it just kept coming back.? Then just as suddenly, his mysterious host's face floated into view and spoke to him, but try as he might, he still couldn't understand.? Who was he and why was he appearing in his dreams?? That seemed to be enough to knock him out of his stupor, and just as Rabbit reached out and touched his shoulder, he convulsed and his eyes started to open. As his consciousness brought him back, his head began to pound like a heavy drum.? He propped himself up on his elbows, the mere action of which seemed like a giant chore and made him feel like he was out of breath looking around.? His head swiveled as he tried to take stock of the room, trying to figure out just where he was, when his eyes alighted to Rabbit's and a sense of panic rapidly took over.? He sat up at the speed of light, scrambling backwards until his back hit the sofa's arm and he nearly careened backwards, stopping himself just in time, now looking down at the flood behind him.? He wheezed as he tried to calm himself down, turning back to Rabbit who seemed to be just as apprehensive.? Waited a minute...wasn't he bleeding before?? His alarmed response caused a sharp twinge in his side, wincing as his hand touched where he was previously wounded.? When he didn't feel any wetness, he brought his hand back up to his face and examined the glove.? No fresh blood and what was on then was now dried and crusty.? Pulling both of his gloves off, he lifted the bottom edges of his bloodied vest and looked at his skin.? Though there was a slight scarring where he was cut, the wound was no longer there and the skin had closed up.? Roue looked back to Rabbit, his eyes wide open and confused.? This still didn't explain what happened and how he ended up here. "<Wh-who are you?!? What do you want with me?!>" he exclaimed, raising one arm up in defense, his finger splayed and pointed towards his host.? He was just about to act before the other could, but then it hit him.? A nice, fragrant smell of food.? Turning, he now noticed a side table with some dishes on it, a cup of tea, some kind of soup and another tall container with a clear liquid inside.? His stomach violently growled in response, causing the wizard's cheeks to become rosy and so he meekly looked away.? The intense hunger he felt took over, however, and without wasting a single moment, he swung his legs over the sofa's edge and took to the food with gusto.? Screw being ceremonious and noble, he thought, I'm so hungry I could eat a Peco-Peco.? He shoved as much of the stew into his mouth, moaning out in response to the deliciousness that assaulted his tongue.? He guzzled the other liquid which he now recognized as a type of broth, followed by the tea.? Roue ate ravenously until each bowl and container was emptied, fully satisfied and no longer affected by the sharp hunger pangs.? Taking a few minutes to get his breath back into control, Roue then turned back to the boy and placing one leg beneath the other, took hold of both his knees and deeply bowed his head.? Though he was still suspicious of the other, the doubt that he would be fed first and then attacked seemed to go away. "<I thank you for this generous offering of food,>" he said, raising his head.? Tilting his head, he examined the other, as he raised one finger and pointed to his own lips.? "<Can you...do you understand what I'm saying?>" (Rabbit) Rabbit was startled when the stranger's eyes opened suddenly and the man tried to sit up. ? "C-careful there, s-sir," the little vampire cautioned, backing up a step.? "We just got you p-patched up.? Don' go m-makin' it worse by hurtin' yourself." The propped himself up against the back of the sofa, then began examining himself, pulling off his gloves and opening his outer garments to check the place where he'd been wound.? A look of puzzlement came over his face and he looked back to Rabbit, saying something in that strange language he'd spoken in before.? Rabbit bit his lip and shook his head slightly, but then the man seemed to notice the food the little vampire had brought to the room. Without further ado, the stranger drank the broth and the tea and devoured the stew with a ravenous fury.? When he'd finally finished everything on the tray, he surprised Rabbit by bowing to him in what seemed like a gesture of gratitude. ? The man began speaking once again, gesturing questioningly, apparently wondering if Rabbit could understand what he was saying.? Rabbit could only shake his head once again.? "S-sorry, sir," he said helplessly.? "I d-don' understand."? The little vampire chewed on his lip for a moment.? He'd heard a lot of languages and accents in his time, especially here at the Dionysus, but nothing was ringing a bell with him.? He tried addressing the man in Japanese, then in Romany, but the stranger only looked as blank as Rabbit had felt.? Falling back on the few words and phrases he remembered from other languages only produced the same lack of understanding. Communication apparently not an option at the moment, Rabbit turned his thoughts to things he _could_ do.? He gave the man a serious lookover, noting that the man's clothes were not only torn and encrusted with dried blood where he'd been wounded, they were also somewhat dirty as well. ? "Uhm, s-sir?? Would you like to, uhm, m-maybe get cleaned up?" he asked, miming movements of washing his face and upper body.? "I can get your clothes cleaned too, if'n you want.? And maybe fix the torn parts?"? He tried miming those things as well, wondering if anything was being understood.? "I can get you a, uhm, b-bed, if'n you wanna rest some more. Which wouldn' be a bad idea, y'know." While he waited to see if the stranger would respond, the little vampire let his eyes settle on the stranger's striking face once again.? "You s-sure are good-lookin'," he sighed, starting to reach up to touch the man's smooth features and strangely colored hair but quickly stopping himself, feeling his cheeks suddenly blush with embarrassment.? "Wherever you c-come from." Tag - Roue |
Re: High Moon Tales. Tales of the Wicked West.
开云体育Note: this last post really confused me as to order.? Will add my post to the most recent ones and hope for the best. (Old- Charity- Millers Crossing) ? Charity looked up from her husband's attentions, suddenly alert. "Something's amiss, husband. Give us a moment, will you?" She stood, her lithe, dark skin glistening in the wan moonlight, and went to the window. As if seeing all the way to Bendo she peered into the dust cloud. "They're not together," she commented. "Perhaps they need a little help? Should I offer them a little help?" Charity chuckled softly, her laugh echoing like tinkling glass. Her hands began to move as if pulling strings, or perhaps a large spider plucking the threads of her web..... ? (Old- NPC Belligerent Ranchers - Bendo) ? "Like I said, passin' strange, this storm," the old rancher repeated to his companions, several rough looking ranch hands. "Them five strangers rolled into town, an' now we're all holed up in this one chow hall wedged in like peas in a pod. I'm thinkin' maybe someone should do sumthin'." The other men at his table, the aforementioned 'riff-raff' grumbled again as he spoke. "Sumthin' weird is goin' on, an' I don't like it. Not one bit." Glaring at the table where Sicilien and Chase were being joined by Callie and Flynn he continued,? "An' lookie there, they're all a-meetin' up." The other men mumbled between themselves, looking between Etienne sitting alone and the table where Chase, Sicilien, Callie, and Flynn were. "Five strangers," the rancher prompted. In unison the band of burly men stood up. Six of them went to the table of four, and two to Etienne's table. ? "We're thinkin'," one of them said ominously, standing over the group, "that this here dust storm ain't natch'ral, see?" They all nodded and he continued, "an we're thinkin' it has sumthin doin' with the five of you." ? Several more of the townsfolk stood then, some of them holding bottles, knives, of other improvised weapons. Others in the restaurant moved towards the walls. ? ?(New Callie Carson) ? The redhead noticed the men approaching a couple seconds before they spoke. From the looks on their faces, she immediately gathered they were trouble. Her hand slipped down under the table and seized the butt of her pistol as it lay sheathed in her holster. She then smiled up at the men. ? ?"Oh, so we control the weather now?" she said, a hint of amusement to her voice as she sized each of the thugs up. "Why don't you all get along before y'all get hurt." ? ?She lifted the gun from her holster, but kept it under the table, ready to draw as soon as one of them moved... (New - Flynn) ?? The pooka turned his head lazily to regard the belligerent barflies, noting their assorted knives, bottles, and blunt instruments.? No guns drawn, at least not yet.? Good.? He also noted that Callie had a gun ready under the table, just in case.? Also good. ? ?? "Now, now, gentlemen," Flynn said, holding his hands up and motioning in a calm-down gesture, "the strange weather's just got you on edge, that's all."? He grinned widely at the onlookers.? "How about a little medicine-show magic trick to take your minds off things?" ? ?? He rose to his feet, keeping his hands up and showing that he wasn't wearing a gun.? "If you'll kindly give me your undivided attention, I'll show you a trick I learned years ago from a Shoshone medicine man.? I'm gonna walk outside..." he nodded to where the hotel/saloon doors were "...and then my horse is gonna come in here and deal a round of poker."? He made a flourish with his left hand and a deck of cards suddenly appeared, which he proceeded to place on the table.? "And if for any reason my trick doesn't work, then you can split this among you."? The pookah made another flourish, this time just over the table with his right hand, leaving a stack of shining $20 gold pieces when he lifted it away. ? Pausing a moment to let the crowd take in what he'd said - and see the stack of gold and the deck of cards now lying on the table - Flynn opened his arms wide.? "Now, if you'll just bear with me, I'll begin.? Ten, nine..." he said, stepping backwards towards the swiveled doors "...eight, seven, six..." ?? He stepped out through the doors, disappearing into the darkened street beyond.? "...five, four..."? His voice stopped, and for a long moment there was only the sound of the storm winds blowing. ? ? Then suddenly a horse stepped back into the room, a large black stallion with strangely alert eyes, clopping its right forehoof onto the floor with a loud single stomp. ? As the crowd of locals watched, the horse made its way to the table where Flynn had been sitting with the others, forcing the crowd to part before its sheer size.? The horse bent its head down towards the deck of cards, paused to wink at Callie... and then kicked back suddenly with its hind legs, striking the head rancher hard in the chest and sending him crashing backwards into the startled hands. ? Troy Rising: Coming to Sorts at Troy Regional, part 2
Back at the Hospital they met another set of guards outside. These two weren’t part of the Savior’s but local deputies. They gawked dumbfounded at Zafiri. One made a move for a pistol at his waist. “HOLD THERE!” Jan commanded. The man froze in place. Haven't you been updated officer? Zafiri is a friend. Anything happens to her and I’ll hold you personally responsible.? A spark flew from Jan’s band on her wrist.? “Yes, sure, no problem!” A look of fear crossed both men’s faces.? “Ah, hell.” Jan pulled Zafiri through the doors and inside. One of Julian’s men stood outside of Zafiri Father’s room. He studied Jan intently. “I was expecting you. Julian would like a word.” Zafiri entered the room carrying her bundle with one quick look back at Jan. Jan nodded and gave her a small smile as the door closed behind her.? “Of course, where do I need to go?” “He’s in the room,” he said.? “Go on in.” Through the door, Julian and the old man were…having an animated conversation? “So you say these ‘nano-surgeons’,” the old man said, “they’re inside me, literally repairing the damaged tissue of my heart?” “I’m no doctor, but that’s the general idea,” Julian replied.? “I’m told that your heart will act like it’s 20 years younger when it’s done.” “Ahh, I could go dancing again,” he chuckled.? Then he turned his head to see his daughter. He smiled.? “Zafiri! My little princess…” Zafiri said nothing.? She simply rushed forward and wrapped her arms around his neck.? After several moments of sobbing and soft words, she realized something. “Father…did you?” she started in her language. “It’s a simple spell, little princess,” he smiled.? “And I had so many questions.” “I’ll be damned.” Jan said. “I’m...happy to meet you...”? Did she know his name? She hated that when she’d heard a name and forgotten it. A shadow moved in her mind. It felt like she was suddenly reliving her past in fast forward. The feeling passed quickly and she leaned against one wall. That was better than falling. Another feeling arose inside her. Like smelling something cooking she sensed the older man held something powerful. Jan pulled back her annoying peeping tom act as best she could. The device or whatever it was drew her in like hypnotic music.? Jan touched Julian’s shoulder, a gesture she wouldn’t have dreamed of back in the day in the Corp but with Julian it felt right. “I think I should go back home and rest up. Who knows what or when someone else might decide to infringe on our little hamlet.”? To Zafiri she added, “You are welcome to stay at my house if you want.” She glanced at her Father, “As you may as well.” The strange language came so easily now. It surprised her the look she got from Julian. She shrugged helplessly. How do you explain insanity? “Well, it seems there are more than a few surprises today,” Julian said.? He eyed Jan. “I’m looking forward to an explanation later, of course. In the meantime, as I understand it Mr. Naarmyr, you should be released tomorrow morning, but the docs will probably tell you to take it easy for a while and avoid fried foods.” “A wise precaution,” Haran col Naarmyr said.? “Although I hope to continue our discussions at a future date.” “I can guarantee it,” Julian smiled, before getting serious.? “I have a feeling the future is going to count on this and other conversations.” As this was going on, Zafiri pulled out a small slip of paper, and prepared another translation spell.? She realized that at some point she’d have to learn whatever their language was. For now though… “I…apologize for not letting you know we could do this,” she said sadly.? “I just…” “You needed to learn more about us, I get it,” Julian assured.? “Hopefully, you’ve learned enough that you might trust us. As you might expect, we’re…not from around here.” Zafiri was surprised at how easily the Hidalgo regarded a situation where most would panic.? They were strangers in this world—a part of the world which happened to be at war right now. Of course, after what she witnessed earlier today, perhaps the world should be more worried. “Anyone besides me hungry?” Julian asked.? “The hospital cafeteria isn’t half bad, especially if you’re not a patient.” Although the staff had been updated on the peculiar new visitors that didn’t stop wide-eyed stares from those who had yet to come in contact with the alien strangers.? Jan kept her sunglasses on and followed after Julian and Zafiri as he led them to the cafeteria. The smell of food made her stomach lurch. The beer had staved off hunger for a short while but now she felt ravenous.? She heaped potatoes, pork slices and garlic bread on a plate along with a paper cup filled with diet soda and planted herself in a chair.? She wanted to plug Julian on city reactions to his report but held back. How many of Troy would venture beyond the perimeter out of curiosity? If what they had encountered so far was any indication the lands outside of Troy were extremely dangerous.? Jan was also curious about the magic Zafiri and her father were employing. It looked as if they were using some kind of script without any obvious accoutrements like lamb’s blood or sacrificed virgins fingers. That was a good thing of course but it reminded her of the sacrificial altar she’d fabricated using pig’s blood, iron flecks and incensed candles. She’d ask those questions later when she had Zafiri to herself. Unable to help herself she looked to Julian and spoke up, “So, what’s city hall’s take on all this so far?” “Well, as of this moment, Mayor Reeves is in a closed session with the rest of the City Council and some of the more prominent corporate leaders,” Julian said.? “Chiefly the managers from Mistu-Sikorsky, Militech and Biothechnica. I’ve been privy to some of the goings on, being the leader of the Three Nations in Troy, but I’ll probably know more tomorrow.? From the sound of it, they’re looking at what to do for the long run, and what our options are. “The good news for the short term:? Power’s been restored, and it looks like we have it for a good long time at the moment, and people are surprisingly calm.? There was a danger of having everyone panic buy food and supplies at the grocery stores, but those are closed for now under orders of the Mayor.? Luckily, with the fact we just started TroyFest, there’s still plenty of food to go around, and will be for a short while.” Zafiri listened intently.? These “corporate leaders” sounded important, though the names of their realms were unlike anything she had ever heard before.? Militech? Biotechnica? Mitsu-Sikorsky? They made no sense. She couldn’t even guess at their creed, though if she could’ve, she was pretty certain they’d still make no sense. “Ma’am,” he said to Zafiri, “I’d like you to attend tomorrow’s city council meeting.” “Me?” Zafiri blurted.? “Why?” “Well, quite frankly, because you’re really the only one we know who has a clear idea where we are,” he explained.? “I think they’re going to need to fully understand the reality we now find ourselves in. I mean, Jan and I can tell them all about what happened with those soldiers, but I think they need to understand why it happened, and what’s going on.? We can’t do that, but you can” Zafiri nodded in understanding.? “I will do my best, my Lord.” “No, no no, don’t call me that,” Julian pleaded.? “You can just call me ‘Julian’ like anyone else.” “I’ve heard them call you…jefe?” Zafiri inquired. “It’s sort of a more informal title,” he said.? “No one has to call me that. It’s just a tradition among my people.” “And you’re also their leader,” she observed. “Only because they chose me.” Zafiri went wide-eyed in shock.? They…chose!? Unbelievable! The way he carried himself, he seemed to be like a nobleman.? Yet his facial features weren’t so delicate. And his hands…they showed rough and calloused, like he had worked with them most of his life.? So…no, he wasn’t a nobleman…but he was a leader. People looked up to him… But such a strange man for a leader. “I good one,” Jan chimed in. She gave Julian a wolfish grin with a quick nod at Zafiri.? She sat back, closed her eyes. The population of Troy dumped into a strange world. It would become the epi-center for learning and power assuming that no one had better weapons than a blunderbuss came down the pike. That was the positive outlook. She studied their new acquaintance Zafiri. She had a history that defied any preconceptions of normality. Yet the mage with horns remained calm, peaceful under the circumstances.? Did she have something coercing her behavior? Likely not. No one did. Well there were those crazies who thought the devil resided in their head. What sort of control would they have? Would they walk forward in a suicidal confrontation with a Dragon, no correction, wyvern? Was that her in control? No it wasn’t. She would not just expose herself that way. It defied her training. She would remain under cover. It was what was done in a firefight.? She walked back the events of the day. Zafiri’s own birth rite: “And the people of Torquan, whether by the dark powers themselves or by the Gods as a mark of their displeasure, placed the mark upon them, changing them from men to what we are today.” Dark powers? Jan shuddered involuntarily, sighed then slugged down the rest of her diet soda. She needed time to study. To think. If there was some foregn dark one inside her how could she expunge it, him? “These dark powers…they kept their promise, but at a terrible price.” Jan shuddered again. Had her price launched an entire city into chaos? Why? If something or someone else had guided her then the question of the day was why? If something was in her head it wasn’t talking.? She stood, uneasy with the feeling that anything could happen at any second.? “Need some air, I’ll catch you...mas tarde.” She gave Julian a half-assed salute. Then left the table. Jan wandered out of the cafeteria and after a short walk out onto the sidewalk of the Hospital. She wasn’t convinced, not completely. But if there was a chance she was responsible? Could she fix it? Of course not. The thing had done this. She didn’t have the knowledge, intent or power to pull it off.? She hadn’t been in a good state of mind. She thought back again at the moment she’d completed the circle to devour herself inside. To end her suffering? Shit and hellfire! How did that go genius?? If the people of Troy only knew. She’d be person non grata. Better not let that cat out of the bag.? Jan ran to her Electro. It was time to do something. |
Troy Rising: Q & A with Jan and Zafiri
It was a short drive back to her Mother’s house. Jan got a kick out of watching Zafiri climb out of her little Chevy. It was something one had to practice. It was so low to the ground.? “This is your home?” “My Mother’s house. I was born here. I came home...not so long ago.” It still hurt, the loss. The blue mage marveled over the whole package, from the entrance to the rooms, the kitchen and she almost fainted when Jan showed her the refrigerator.? “This is true magic, special.” “Actually it is not. It is science. A whole different beast. I’ll explain things as we progress.” She showed her the shower and how it operated. The shampoo and soap she used and how to use it. She gave her a fresh towel. “You want some fresh clothes?” Zafiri sorted through the large closet and dresser. After some consideration and some suggestions from Jan she picked out a black jumpsuit with short sleeves and plunging neckline that would certainly not be official military grade.? Zafiri showered. It seemed to take forever. She finally appeared in the old outfit, it had been her Mother’s from a couple of decades ago but it was in stellar shape. In a pair of black flats she looked bad ass. Some kind of gnarly tattoo ran up the side of one shoulder and disappeared down her back.? Her hair was combed and held a new luster.? “Wow,” Jan said. “You look great.” She led Zafiri to a full length mirror in her bedroom. The alien looking female had a fantastic body that made Jan jealous. The tail was a problem with the Jumpsuit. In the end Jan ended up cutting a hole in the back just below the band. It was fluffy enough to hide the opening, hopefully. It twitched and quivered under Jan’s soft touch and she wondered just what kind of feeling it was giving the blue women. Touching her that way made goose pimples rise on her arms. It was very erotic, unexpectedly so. Zafiri said nothing and gave no indication of any kind. Good enough, Jan thought. Up close like this she felt giddy. It made little sense. She wasn’t into girls all that much. Despite old habits she longed to touch the women again. She had to fight to restrain herself.? Zafiri glared at her reflection but seemed mollified by Jan’s constant barrage of compliments.? ‘I can wash these things and get them back to you later?’ Zafiri considered it for a moment then agreed. She let the blue mage watch some old National Geographic vids on her terminal while she went to clean up.?? She looked at herself in the mirror. “Saul’s Ghost!” She looked like the living dead! Before she took her shower she grabbed a pair of sunglasses out of her bedside table. These were the only solution for now. She looked like a pissed off instructor.? Later, dressed in her normal jeans and flight jacket she entered the living room to find Zafiri gone! “Oh shit!” Jan didn’t move or breath for a heart beat. She just closed her eyes and felt around. Zafiri was outside near the flower garden. It was badly tended. Jan wasn’t nearly the green thumb her mother had been. But years of gardening didn’t evaporate the little darlings overnight. The flowers had almost gone away with the advent of fall but today they were making a strong comeback with the warm air coming from the west. A shadow crossed her mind like a blanket. She blinked her eyes open. What the hell was that? Was she going insane? She made a quick meal for them. A soup and a salad with lemon tea. Zafiri made faces but seemed satisfied after it was over.? “Thank you for your hospitality,” Zafiri said.? “You’ve all been rather kind, not to mention generous, but I don’t understand why, and your conveyances…these buildings…who are you people?” “I can explain our position relative to your situation. We were seeking the cause of a fire. I’d determined that, or guessed that we were no longer physically located in our world. Our new core, a circle I think about 20 miles give or take in diameter was transported to your world. We didn’t really feel it.” Jan paused, well she had but that was different.? “We moved to investigate the fire. We found a family being attacked, raped actually by some moronic men in uniform with muskets or blunderbusses. Shortly after anialating those dick heads we noticed you incoming with Dragons on your tail. It seemed at the time you were the ones being persecuted so we intervened.” “Yes…those men…mercenaries under the command of Lord Marshall Aiden Turriq,” Zafiri nodded.? “They’ve come up from the South, as part of Ispaara’s efforts to conquer and pacify the Northlands.? They recently sacked the city of Masden not too long ago, and now their forces are spreading out through the countryside.” Burning villages…she could still smell the nightmarish stench.? She remembered having to hurry through. Even in villages, she had to be careful, as people wanted to avoid “tiefling corruption”. The news that they were not of this world was astounding, though not out of the bounds of reason.? Rahal da Carta, Master of the Many, had posited the concept of other worlds and realities, some of which were inhabited exclusively by the Gods, some not.? She owned a rare copy of da Carta’s Naturalis enim ordo codice, where he discussed this and other metaphysical concepts. “And, as promised, it’s your turn,” she said with a slight smile.? “What’s your question?” Jan studied Zafiri and inconspicuously her tail. “Well, the men we killed were just men but you, you are of some other humanoid category. You also don’t seem natural to this world, at least that would be my first thought. How many more here are like you?”?? “I and my father are Torquani,” Zafiri explained, “although most people outside our kind call us ‘tieflings’, though we find it offensive. “Our ancestors were of the race of men, like you long ago, and ruled a region once known as Torquan.? They were rivals to the Imyrrians of the north, and fought many wars with them. Finally, in a desperate bid to overcome their hated adversaries, their leaders made a pact with dark powers, and beseeched them to destroy their enemies. “These dark powers…they kept their promise, but at a terrible price.? The entire subcontinental mass that was Immyr was sunk beneath the waves, her people massacred.? It didn’t stop there, though. Devastation the likes of which had never been seen were wreaked across the lands.? The area known as Torquan, once a lush rainforest, is today the barren desert known as Al Shafah. It is also why this continent, known as Ocillia, is called the Shattered Continent. “And the people of Torquan, whether by the dark powers themselves or by the Gods as a mark of their displeasure, placed the mark upon them, changing them from men to what we are today.? We are often considered unwelcome in many places, and those places we’re allowed, we’re sequestered in ‘Torquani Quarters’ of their cities and towns. If there is a way to undo this transformation, no one has found it.” Zafiri had decided that it didn’t pay to be deceitful to these people.? They honestly didn’t know anything about the Torquani or anybody else around here.? Besides, as an intellectual, it was anathema to her to lie about such things. “This world, I’d like a map of it with whatever knowledge about it’s peoples and lands if you can. I expect we are here to stay and I’m curious to the geography and habitation. Not to mention the Dragons. Are there more dangerous creatures that dwell on this planet?” “There are plenty of dangerous creatures, though actual dragons are rare,” Zafiri responded.? “What those men were riding are actually a breed of wyvern.? You can tell by the fact that it only has four appendages—a pair of wings and two legs. “As for a map, I can make you one, but it will take time.? I can tell you now though that you’re in an area of Ocillia known as the Northlands.? This particular area is part of a province once ruled by the Duke of Masden, though I suppose right now it belongs to Turriq by right of conquest.” Jan went to the fridge and grabbed two beers. She handed one to Zafiri before continuing.? She opened hers first as a demonstration.? “Anyway, it seems we are more advanced technologically whereas you have certain magical inclinations we are oblivious to.” She paused, that had been a mouthful. “Yes, I’ve noticed that your wondrous devices don’t seem to use magic,” Zafiri observed.? “Even if they were, I’d still be impressed.? The idea that such things could exist without magic still boggles my mind.” Jan nodded agreement. “Upon sight of those Dragons I had the same feeling. Our people from where I come from developed technology recently. Over the course of our history technology is new like a baby. We were getting to the point where AI was beginning to create its own life. A dangerous prospect. AI stands for artificial intelligence. Basically machines started to think on their own.” “A machine…that thinks on its own!?” Zafiri blinked in disbelief.? “I find that difficult to fathom.? Although…I am familiar with stories of certain ancient wonders, like the Mad Golem, and the Infernal Machine of Torann the Tyrant.? No one has ever found these wonders, though.”? Jan finished off her beer. “How many of the inhabitants of this world can do magic?” The young Torquani pondered the question and how to best answer it, taking the occasional pull of what Jan called “beer”.? In truth, it seemed rather watered down to her. “I cannot give you an accurate estimate, as I don’t know the state of the entire world.? What I can tell you is that magic is common enough for everyone to be aware of it.?? “But being aware of it and having the Talent for it are two different things.? I have a strong Talent, while my father has a weaker one—but he makes up for it with his knowledge of the healing arts.? If one isn’t born with the Talent, one can’t do magic, though there are some exceptions to this rule. “There is often a concerted effort to find individuals with the Talent, and you’ll often find powerful wizards among the courts of the elite.? Less capable individuals might sell their services to warlords and the like. Every village probably knows of a hedge magician—people with very small talents for magic—who use the craft to address certain woes, though their skills usually rely more on herbalism than actual magic. “You won’t find anything like an army of wizards or the like.? The closest to that comes from the Church of the Holy Twelve. In order to be at least a priest in their order, you have to be a Talent.? The stronger the Talent, the higher one can climb in the hierarchy of the Church, up to the High Lord Papal, who ranks as one of the most powerful wizards on the continent.” She had largely abandoned the exchange of a question for a question.? At the moment, she was finding out quite a bit just from listening to the questions she was asked.? It was true what her father had once said: You can learn a lot simply by listening. In english she said to Zafiri, “Hospital...Father.” Then spoke to her in her own language. ‘We return now to the Hospital and your Father, yes.’ She handed Zafiri a fluffy blanket and a small pillow. ‘This will come in handy later trust me.’ |
Troy Rising: Coming to Sorts at Troy Regional, part 1
Even in the age of the mid-21st century economic collapse, the Troy Regional Medical Center was considered one of the finest medical institutions in America, and could’ve easily competed with big name hospitals in big cities. It had been responsible for nearly all the needed major medical care for the southeast quadrant of Alabama, and even some Floridians who dared to make the trek (the highways weren’t as safe or intact as they used to be).? It had a small fleet of ambu-naughts (armored ambulances), medical choppers (cheaper to use and refuel than AV’s) to extend its reach, and it could perform any medical procedure short of full body cybernetic replacement (that kind of stuff was reserved for the even bigger corporate hospitals). Some of the strain of the Collapse had forced it to close a couple wings, but they consolidated what they could, and used the unused space to store extra medical supplies in case the highways got completely cut off, so the hospital was incredibly well stocked, even by the standards of the day. Of course, no one ever contemplated being cut off from Earth indefinitely.?? No one was thinking that right now, of course.? The priority was to keep their current patients comfortable and get to treating the new patients that came in.? Power had only been briefly interrupted, since the hospital had its own backup generators in the basement and the latest Sol Invictus solar panels on its roof.? As a result, the hospital didn’t even notice when main grid power took over a few hours later. When Julian’s small convoy pulled up, nurses and med-techs were standing ready, having been radioed ahead of time.? Julian, knowing he wasn’t a medic, got out of the way, and started making some calls to the rest of the Nomad leadership, the Mayor, and in turn, the Police.? He had already described what to look for, but he wanted to make sure. The edge where the CHOOH2 crops turned into forest was now effectively their border, and it needed watching. ===== “A-ya, what the hell?” Nurse Bethany Lum exclaimed as an unconscious girl was placed on a rolling litter, back up, showing the blood-soaked bandages on her back.? “You there, medic! What happened to her!?” “Some bastard decided to whip her in front of her Dad,” the medic said.? “I um…gave the old man a sedative. He’s sleeping it off right now.” “Right, got it,” Lum said, putting her professional facade back on.? “This one: Clean up and spray skin, stat! What’s next?” “This poor woman,” gesturing to a woman dressed in a simple dress and bodice combination.? “She um…ahem…three men were taking turns with her…” “I wish you didn’t have to tell me that,” Lum grimaced.? “Get an IV drip started on her, with 12 cc’s anti-bio 1, and make sure we have female staff only checking on her.? Go! Next?” “This guy here,” the medic said, wheeling in…the devil!?? He was older, green skinned, and had well looked after horns, but STILL horns…and was that a tail!? “He’s had a massive coronary.? I’ve got him stabilized but—“ “But what?” Lum interjected.? “I mean, is he even human? I just can’t start treating him willy-nilly—“ “Look nurse,” the medic interrupted.? “I don’t know what he is, but I know he’s responded positively to the anti-coags and beta blockers.? And my blood test tells me he’s blood type O-, so you don’t have to worry there. But I’ve done all I can for him, and I don’t want his daughter worrying, so…” Bethany looked over at a young, blue skinned girl, who also had horns and a definite tail, and her lines softened.? Whatever they were, she knew worry when she looked her in the eyes, and the way she wouldn’t let go of the old man’s hand.? Bethany took a deep breath, let it out… “Okay, get him hooked up and ready for ultrasound,” she said.? “Did you use nano-surgeons?” “Yes, ma’am,” the medic said back. “Good,” she affirmed.? “We’ll get them online to tell us what’s going on, too.? Next!” ===== Still able to understand them, Zafiri feared they were about to be thrown out, but then the…medic?? He explained some things, and said something about his blood type being O negative. What in the heavens did that mean? Whatever it meant, this woman changed her mind, it seemed.? They were not being thrown out. She talked about something called “ultrasound”, and apparently they could talk to the “nano-surgeons” that were inside of her father, already. It all sounded like strange magic to her, but as far as her senses could tell, nothing they used, from their healing materials to the strange horseless carriages, were magical in any way.? Nothing about them was magical… Except now that one woman.? The one who talked into Zafiri’s mind.? The one who seemed to spontaneously cast that powerful magic that wiped out that one dragon.? She noticed that that woman was being wheeled off—to a “recovery room”, and how they weren’t sure what was wrong with her or why she was unconscious. They started to wheel off her father, but she refused to let go.? Surprisingly, they didn’t make her do so. They just let her come along as they brought him to a room, and started removing his robes.? Reluctantly, she let go to allow them to do that. Then she grew rather alarmed!? His jewelry…they were removing it.? Oh gods…were they robbing him? What about their possessions in the chest?? Would they be taken? Would they discover the silver her father was responsible for?? What could she do!? Then she found that her worry was strangely unfounded.? True, they did remove his jewelry, but they put it all in a curious clear…bag.? Once the last ring went in, they handed the bag to her, and proceeded to put on some sort of flimsy…gown on her father’s still form. “Keep these for him,” said the woman slowly, as his rings were handed over to her.? “We wash clothes, then give back…” What a shock it would have been for the woman if Zafiri decided to respond in their own language.? She could, at least for a few more hours before the spell wore off. But no…they were helping, it seemed, but there was so much going on.? And this place…this hospital? It was unlike anything she had seen before. It was large, and so clean. And the place was lit up so brightly, and she wasn’t sure how. She had so many questions, and no one to ask them to. Well…maybe not no one.? There was one, perhaps…the Hidalgo. The one they called Jefe, or Julian. Janet had been right there when all the fireworks happened. The strange blue expulsion from her own body, an exodus of something potent from a pool of energy found...everywhere. Yet she had been a passive stranger in her own self. She’d strayed into suiside realm once again but not of her own accord.? She’d fought for control, the fear so terrible, the blackness so complete. She worked to free her mind, felt something tear, a slice here and a hole there. Then a message came to her but it was like a feeling had come, ‘be still, watch’.? She’d done so as her body expelled something incredibly powerful, a force violent and extreme. Whatever it was it was death and it had come from her but directed by something else. What was this other? She groaned. Light was stinging her eyes. The darkness had left her and now it was bright. Noises came, footsteps on a hard floor. The smell of the hospital. Her meager sheets felt cold against her skin. She raised a hand to her head. Something encircled her wrist.? Eyes open she looked up at the strange ornament. What the hell was this? The bracelet was of some kind of blue metal that was locked firmly onto her like a vice. It did not give her pain and it seemed of no consequential weight. With her free right hand she tried to gain purchase and wiggle it free. It was not budging.? She gave up and struggled to her elbows. Then a thought occurred to her and she cursed out loud. Her ChevyElectro was god knows where._._,_._,_ A door opened and a man in a white coat was smiling at her. “Hello Janet. What did you do to get yourself in here?”? The man was fit and good looking, a professional doctor, one with good bedside manners. Things were looking up. “I’m fine if you need to know. Just a little disoriented is all,” Jan said weakly. She didn’t feel weak but her voice sounded like crap. “I am Doctor Jenson. We’ve done a little work up on you. Everything seems to be in working order. I am curious as to what happened to you? “Hit my head, right on the chip-o-meter you might say. Out like a light I guess.” She smirked sourly at her quick lie.? He took her arm and checked her pulse. “Okay,” he said as if to himself. He examined her head in the back near the nap of her neck. “Not a scratch here that I can see,” he added cheerfully. He stepped back and folded his arms across his chest. “You know the drill? Make sure someone checks on you when you go to sleep. Just a precaution for the next day or so.” “Got it,” Jan said with a smile. He was letting her go. That was cool. She hated hospitals. She started to climb out of the bed.? “Wait,” Doctor Jenson said. “I think you might want some clothes.” A nurse eventually showed up with some oversized jeans and a thermal shirt in a sick orange color. She pulled them on. Thankfully there was a belt to keep them up. She checked the mirror on the way out and groaned. She looked like a war victim. She touched her face. The skin was very pale and cold to the touch. “Holy hell,” she remarked to the face staring back at her. She did a double take and blinked. Her eyes, they were almost black. “You couldn’t take the freckles but you could do this too my eyes?” Her voice was fierce. A spark jumped randomly from her arm to the alien bracelet on her wrist. It made her jump and made her heart leap in her chest. “This is stupid.” Then she felt it. The power that surrounded her. It had come on so slowly she’d not noticed until now. Or had it been her anger? Hadn’t the Doctor noticed those eyes? Scared the shit out of myself! She looked back into the mirror and gripped the sink that hung just below with both hands. She tried to push back on that feeling of energy rippling around her. It seemed to fade slightly. Out in the hall she looked both ways. Out, left maybe. She strode confidently bare-footed down the hall. She was just making some good headway, the front doors were in sight the daylight still strong through the window when she passed another room without a door. Don’t look. She looked. It was a waiting room. SHE was there in a seat looking lost as hell.? Shit! It was the blue girl.? “Zfiri.” Had she spoken out loud? The horns swiveled and those yellow eyes glowered at her.? “Hey,” Jan managed with a little wave. “Ristoy esstr oywh?” The words were foreign, completely unknown to her yet they meant ‘Are you okay’?” Zfiri nodded in the affirmative but her body language said ‘I’m just a little freaked out now’. Jan nodded. She was ready to bolt big time. She needed a shower badly and her poor Chevy was out in the sticks, literally.? Instead she went and sat down next to her.? “Your father, is he here, is he okay?” Again with the weird words but they were making sense somehow. Zfiri gave Jan the rundown the best the poor thing could do. Her father was doing okay she thought but wasn’t very sure at all. This place is safe right? What happens next? Several more questions came quickly and Jan did her best to answer them.? “I saw him, on the table,” Zfiri continued. “I was terrified. They gave me his...” She held up the bad and Jan noticed rings and other jewelry inside. It all looked like very fine stuff.? “Saul to hell,” Jan said in spanglish then reverted to horn language, “Do you want to come to my home? Rest, clean up, maybe eat then come back here?” Zfiri looked around the room then back at Janet. She reached out to Jan’s freckled face with one blue hand. Jan noticed the fine rings and the beautiful bracelet on her wrist.? “Your eyes?!” Oh shit, she needed some sunglasses in the worst way. Zafiri was, even by 21st century standards (though she didn’t realize it yet), very well educated.? She was a classically trained mage, could speak and was literate in seven different languages, and had training in practical magic (like alchemy), as well as thaumaturgic theory. It was this last one that was guiding her now.? She kept her voice low. “I think you may…” How did she word this delicately.? “Something may have contacted you.? I don’t think your eyes are meant to be that color, are they?? And it would explain why you can speak Torquan all of a sudden.” Of course, she wasn’t sure about the nature of the contact.? Not yet, anyway. Was she possessed? Or perhaps…perhaps she’s one of those who was receptive to Others?? Perhaps she was a potential Covenant mage, and inadvertently made her first Covenant? She wasn’t sure. Not yet. “I will accept your offer,” Zafiri said.? “But I have questions I need to ask.? I assume you have some yourself? I’m willing to exchange evenly if such is the case.” She was marginally satisfied that her father was safe.? More to the point, it was her father, not her, who was adept in the healing arts.? She couldn’t do more for him right now. Jan nodded consent and stood up. The room didn’t wobble and her knees didn’t buckle. In fact she felt about 100% and that didn’t make any sense to her at all. Except...the energy, the pool of energy seemed to seep into her like a water to a sponge. Was that why? Then why had she gone comatose on the battlefield? Maybe Zafiri was onto something. Jan didn’t like the tone of her words. Something was wrong with her and she knew it. But to face it was a different matter. She felt fine right now. She had just nodded in agreement with Zafiri. One thing was certain, that summoning circle had been a real bad idea.? Outside the hospital stood two of the Nomad soldiers Jan had met briefly during the impromptu raid.? Wasn’t everything today impromptu?? “Saviors,” Jan intoned. The term one she just made up on the spot. After all Aldecaldo in Latin meant aid crock. The crock part didn’t make sense unless you consider the group as a whole unit together. In her opinion they were the Saviors in deed and in name.? They both raised eyebrows at her word for them. “Aldecaldo,” she explained. “You come to help those in need, hence Saviors. Just trust me.” She couldn’t remember their names. “I’m Jan and this is Zafiri. I need to get home to clean up. Can you help?” In spanglish the taller one replied, “We know you Jan. You stood before the Dragon and split it with thunder and lightning. You are a champion.” He paused, looking embarrassed, “Are you okay?” “I’m fine,” Jan said switching to spanglish. Sometimes she forgot these little things. “My Electro, I left it...” “I am Luis. We have your car in the parking lot. Come I show you.” At the car Jan was very appreciative. She did ask Luis one last question. “Is the boss around?” “He is very busy.” “I believe that.” (TBC) |
Seven Fingers- Calon y M?r (Sara, Henri, Kir, John)
<Sara Merrick> ? Sara smiled at the woman’s description of herself. Fish farts indeed...and did fish even fart Sara thought. With a shake of her head.. ? “Now Bonnie he’s not near as bad as all that. The captain can be rather charming in his own way. You have so much ire towards him you sound like a woman scorn. Did you two have a thing when you both lived? Is he the reason why you’re dead?” Sara said whispering the last part. ? “Otherwise do tell the reason why you despise him so..,unless you really secretly are in love with him and it’s all an act .” She said with a wink. ? <Bonnie, deceased NPC waitress> ? "Oh," Bonnie snickered, "tha' ol' bastard were long dead afore I washed up on death's door. No, 'ee' s just not right, ye ken. There be sumthin' too distinct about 'im is all." She held up her cup.. "take this 'ere grog. I can drink me own grog all day long, but the Cap'n's grog, from 'is cup," she leaned in and whispered, "tis bleedin' real, it tis. No' of the spirit realm a'tall." ? _______________ <Kirschvasser> ? Kir followed along and did her best not to stare. All the spirits that were here in all sorts of forms of death. She heard John talk of how the old town had perished at the end of the seventeenth century. And that they now lie below the harbor. Her eyes drawn to the spirit with half its face gone. She had an idea that it had been a cannonball. ? As they continued towards the harbor Kir wondered what they were going to find. "John? What is it that you are hoping to do? Does this thing need to be set free?" ? ? <John Merriweather> ? “Well, my dear,” the thaumatologist replied, “that remains to be determined. If it is an elemental, as I believe, then something is binding it to this point. Someone has left a binding spell made that should be dispelled. As a licensed, practicing thaumatologist I have an obligation to undo the spell if I can, and report the infraction to the authorities.” “If it is another wizard, well, I shall confront him and advise him to control the forces he’s wielding better lest he cause some form of mayhem.” John shuddered a bit then. “Of course, if he’s belligerent he will probably kick my ass.” ? (Alphonso) ? Alphonso liked his new protégé’ but he needed some time to truly get to know the lil’ one. “You really wanna get close to that breath? You definitely are fearless!” He didn’t try to hold back the laughter as Davis was all but knocked around like a child and too stupid to know he was against one of his betters. ? “Now that is a threat, but we should be fine considering we can smell you coming!!!” Alphonso yelled. ? “Yeah we need to scram my friend.” He said moving out the back, but realizing they might need to become airborne. “The stairs and keep northeast across the rooftops we should see the harbor from up there.” He said pulling Ulrich with him and pushing him up the stairs in front of him, before the coppers showed their faces. ? “You are pretty fun to be with… we need to go though.” He wasn’t sure what he was saying as he didn’t want to leave his young one but he was sure his others would be looking for him. ? ? (Ulrich) ? Following his new ‘alpha’ down the alley away from Pete’s at a dead run Ulrich laughed. Bashing a couple of Capi Barra wererats was the most fun he had had in, well, forever. Since he had been infected at least! He felt like a teenager again, free of pack rules and Captain’s orders. He sniffed his own fingers, scenting Trixie lingering perfume on them, and he howled into the night. ? ? (Gavin, Fitch) ? It was the third gambling hall that Captain Draegun and Sam Fitch came to, a place called 'Pete's', that showed signs of their errant werewolf. It was a Capi Barra establishment, organized wererats, but the constables were all over it at the moment. There were injured people milling about, constables asking questions, steam wagons with flashing lights, and several miscreants in handcuffs seated on the curb. ? After making several discrete inquiries Fitch reported back to Gavin. “Well, Cap’n, it seems that there were a bar fight started by a pair of muscular fellows what slipped off a’fore the coppers showed. One o' em was dressed like a sailor and 'ad a German accent. Word from the Capis is it were a pair o’ Lobos. Outsiders, not from the local pack, an alpha and a beta.” ? “Shit,” Gavin replied, “our prodigal wolf has an accomplice.” He reached down and removed the ‘peace tie’ from Gwynrheged, causing the enchanted sword to begin singing her battle song in the back of his mind. “We need to find him before the Admiral catches wind of this.”

Re: The Door Between Two Worlds [Roue and Rabbit] (closed)
(Rabbit)
[Roue] Whatever happened once Roue hit the floor was going to become a big black hole of mystery to him.? His head swiveled as he tried to take stock of the room, trying to figure out just where he was, when his eyes alighted to Roue's and a sense of panic rapidly took over.? He sat up at the speed of light, scrambling backwards until his back hit the sofa's arm and he nearly careened backwards, stopping himself just in time, now looking down at the flood behind him.? He wheezed as he tried to calm himself down, turning back to Roue who seemed to be just as apprehensive.? "<Can you...do you understand what I'm saying?>" Tag Rabbit. |

开云体育(Roue) Though the immediate danger seems to have passed, at least for now, Roue still felt his hackles or the equivalent thereof, the hair on the back of his neck, stand up when a shadow started moving towards him from the corner of his eyes.? It didn't help that the bar was dimly lit so the shape was kept hidden as it continued to increase in size.? Damn, Roue thought, they have really thought of everything.? With a free hand, he began to focus a spell on the tips of his fingers, a light, icy sheen covering his glove though it was hidden by the cape that draped over his shoulders.? If they wanted to go so far as taking him down in this place, well, he was then going to give them a fight of their lives.? If he had the energy to do so. However, the shadow suddenly stopped and seemed to hesitate in its forward movement.? Confused, Roue kept his eyes on the figure as after a minute or so it started moving towards him again.? He felt another sharp twinge in his side but kept his focus forward.? Once the being came closer, the light from the nearby sources revealed his would-be assailant.? His eyes widened as he looked over his greeter, eyes running over his form as he tried to understand what or who he was looking at. In front of him stood a slightly shorter boy, fidgeting in place as he faced Roue directly.? The kind of garb he was wearing was not befitting anything he'd ever seen in Rune Midgard, so he wondered if this was some kind of strange visitor from a land neighboring the country.? He wore a sharp and crisp black-colored jacket over a similarly hued but striped button down shirt, and had a collar fitted across his neck?? A small light glinted over what appeared to be a tiny bell, though he had to squint to see it.? Was this a new trend that he wasn't aware of?? He couldn't tell and had to shake his head because it felt like his vision was going fuzzy. However, what stood out even more is this person's hair and face.? His hair, its color reminiscent of a sunlit field of wheat, falling across his head in several relaxed, but spiky waves, starting short at the top and lengthening as it traveled down, half of it hiding the left side of his face, hiding one eye from view.? The other beheld an amazing azure blue orb, much like the color of Roue's own eyes, yet it seemed to have this unnatural glow about it.? There was only one word to describe him - beautiful, but he must be going mental thinking that right now. Both of them seemed to be frozen in place, locked in each other's gaze, but it was Roue who first broke that connection.? A sharp hiss emanated from his lips as he involuntarily convulsed, stumbling forward but catching himself at the last minute.? He brought his left hand up to his face, going pale at what he saw.? The entirety of his gloved hand was slick with blood,? a rightly sticky mess that covered half his right side, violently staining his vest.? This immediately brought him back to the kunai the assassin managed to throw his way right before the ice wall fully materialized.? He thought it just shot by him, maybe ripping a few threads here and there, and cutting off a piece of cape, but he must've been too much in shock and adrenaline to feel its bite until now. Roue looked back at him, feeling quite dizzy at this point? The boy suddenly began addressing him, looking very distressed and fidgeting in place again.? Roue didn't understand a single thing that was coming out that boy's mouth, though he noticed that whatever he spoke was definitely accented, not unlike his own at all.? Nothing seemed to make sense - not the place he found himself in, nor its settings, or the fact that he had no clue what was being said.? Before he could take the time to process all of that though, he felt himself falling forward as pain and exhaustion took over. "<I-I think I'm going to faint,>" he said and collapsed like a ragdoll upon the floor. (Rabbit) Rabbit watched helplessly as the stranger brought up a gloved hand slick with blood, which made him take another step back. The man stared at the blood in puzzlement, as if only now realizing that he was wounded and bleeding.? He said something in a language Rabbit didn't recognize, let alone understand, and then collapsed to the floor. "Oh, sh-shit," stammered the little vampire, staring down at the unconscious patron.? His immediate impulse was to kneel down next to the man, but he didn't want to risk getting close to him with all that blood about.? The sharp metallic tang was already threatening to overpower him and it was taking all of his willpower to resist. But he had to do something, and fast. ? "Klaus," Rabbit hissed urgently.? "N-need some help here."? The muscular barman came over and saw the stranger lying on the floor with blood.? The man knelt down quickly but gave the little vampire a suspicious look. ? "It w-wasn' m-me!" Rabbit said.? "H-honest!? I think he c-came in like this."? People were starting to look their way but fortunately most were not close enough to see the blood and just assumed the man had had too much to drink.? "Can you take him to one of the p-private rooms? I'll go get someone who can h-help." Klaus picked the fallen stranger up and carried him off to one of the private rooms.? After noting the room, Rabbit hurried into the crowd, looking for one of the Dionysus regulars whom he knew could help in situations like this, trying not to think about what this was likely to cost him.? He found her sitting with her usual escort, sipping a glass of champagne. ? "Excuse me, Doctor H-hirono?" Rabbit said, trying to keep his voice down but still be heard over the club noise. "W-we've got a patron who, uhm, kinda needs your help?? If'n you d-don' mind?" he asked, looking hopeful. The lady turned to regard the anxious little vampire with a cool calm gaze, her face reminiscent of a Japanese Noh-mask even with her short dark hair jutting out all stylishly modern.? "Well, well, if it isn't our dear little Rabbit," she said, setting her glass aside.? She let a moment pass, evidently enjoying his discomfiture. "Are you asking for yourself, or for your boss?" "For myself," Rabbit managed, trying not to fidget nervously but failing. "You know I come here to get away from things like that." Her escort, a tall man of indistinct ethnicity but a heavily scarred face, glanced at her as if asking if she wanted him to send Rabbit packing, but she waved him back, keeping her gaze fixed on the little vampire.? "You also know I don't do favors for free." "I kn-know," Rabbit said, swallowing uneasily.? "What d'you, uhm, w-want?" "Why, I want you to pose for me again, dear boy," she said, grinning pleasantly though with her eyes keeping their fixed stare on him.? "I've had an outfit picked out for you that I've wanted to photograph you in for months."? She paused to take a sip from her glass and then set it down again, cocking her head at the little vampire inquiringly.? "So, do we have a deal?" "Y-yeah," Rabbit said, wincing in spite of himself.? "But you need to come n-now.? He's bleedin' pretty bad." He bit his lip, adding "P-please?" "Very well then."? The doctor turned to her escort as she stood up.? "This shouldn't take long, Sab.? Wait for me here." Rabbit took her to the private room Klaus had chosen and stood anxiously just inside the door as Hirono examined the unconscious stranger who was stretched out on a cushioned sofa.? The smell of blood was even worse in the enclosed space and Rabbit didn't want to be any closer than he had to be.? But at the same time, he couldn't help staring at the man's face.? Even pale as he currently was, there was a handsome beauty that lingered there. "Strange," the doctor said after a moment, running her hand back and forth about a foot over the stranger's body.? "Not from around here, I think. But wounded, yes.? Fortunately whatever it was didn't nick a major artery."? She went silent, lowering her hand to just above where the wound in the man's side was now visible.? As she began chanting, a soft purple mist seemed to flow down from her fingers.? As soon as it touched the man's skin, the wound began to grow smaller as the flesh around it was restored to it's previous state.? Rabbit watched in anxious silence until the skin was completely whole again. "There," Hirono said finally, waving the last of the purple mist away with her hand.? "He's stable now.? Will probably be a bit weak from the loss of blood.? And he will probably have to deal with some discomfort as his body deals with the restored tissue, but he should be okay in a few days." She stood once again, stopping to face Rabbit as she made ready to leave, favoring him with one of her smiles that only made the little vampire shiver.? "I'll let you know when I'm ready to have you pose.? The outfit shouldn't require any refitting." She smirked as she added "I still have your measurements from the last time, after all. But we will have to do something about that hair of yours," she went on, running a hand disapprovingly through his blond locks.? "Yes we will." "Th-thank you," Rabbit managed as Hirono went back into the main club area, passing him without so much as a parting glance, the anxiety he'd been feeling seeming to leave with her.? He then looked back to where the stranger was apparently sleeping quietly.? After a moment's thought, he took a blanket from the room's large bed and spread it over the man.? He then dimmed the lights and left the room quietly, closing the door behind him. A short time later, the little vampire returned, carrying a tray with a mug of broth, a bowl of meaty stew, and a pot of tea, which is set on a small table near the sofa.? Returning to the sofa, he cautiously gave the man's shoulder a gentle touch.? "Uhm, mister?" he whispered experimentally.? "Are you awake?? I, uhm, b-brought you somethin' if'n you're hungry." “But you did, Rain. You chose money and power over all of us and now you act like Brandon and Dad are the villains because they don’t agree with you choices and they are vocal about. I don’t agree with it either. I don’t understand why you would turn you back on family to run with a bunch of ganstas, but it’s your life, Imma let you live it the way you want.” She said with a shrug.

“Anyway. So what’s going on with you and that girl I saw you on insta with.” ? -Rain-

? He glanced at Kirstene, his eyes glinting merrily as he added "We're not royalty, after all." ? Tag - Kirstene |

Though the immediate danger seems to have passed, at least for now, Roue still felt his hackles or the equivalent thereof, the hair on the back of his neck, stand up when a shadow started moving towards him from the corner of his eyes.? ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ Original Message ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ On Friday, January 3, 2020 4:34 AM, Whitt Pond <whittpond@...> wrote:

开云体育It was a busy night at the Dionysus Club and Rabbit scurrying all over the place, tending to all of the patrons, fetching drinks from the long bar and picking up orders from the kitchen.? It was the usual crowd, or at least what passed for usual in a club that was itself highly unusual. A mix of guests from all over the world, all of whom dwelled on the fringes of humanity, the kind mentioned in stories but not really believed in. Not by 'normal' people anyway. ? The young vampire had just delivered a tray of drinks to a group of what he suspected were British female lycanthropes on holiday but couldn't really be sure.? It was an understood rule that staff of the Dionysus did not ask too many questions of the patrons.? People came here to be themselves in comfort and safety, not to have to explain themselves.? He was heading back to the bar when he heard a tell-tale chime go off, indicating that a new patron had entered the club. Rabbit started looking around - it was one of his duties to handle newcomers to the Dionysus - but it was hard to see over the crowd, especially with so many of the patrons being taller than he was.? He finally caught a wave from one of the barmen on duty, Klaus, who then pointed him towards the far end of the bar where a man was half-standing, half leaning against the bar's curved end.? Rabbit nodded to Klaus and hurried over. Up close, the newcomer stood out, even by the club's standards.? Very elegant clothing from a different era, the kind one usually only saw on stage or at costume balls, though in this case they looked like they'd been experiencing some hard wear and tear.? The man's hair also stood out, very obviously blue-tinted even in the club's dimmer lighting. And did the man's... ears? Rabbit tried not to stare, but found it very difficult not to.? He had of course seen pointed ears before, but not like the ones he was seeing now.? These were delicately shaped, coming to points that suggested something out of a high-fantasy story that dealt with aristocratic elves.? And the man's face had a kind of unearthly beauty that the stories always associated with elves.? But elves weren't real, were they?? The young vampire bit his lip, trying not to fidget, before finally remembering that he had a duty to perform. "Uhm, w-welcome to the Dionysus Club, sir," he managed, hoping the man wasn't put off by his momentary fascination.? "Can I, uhm, you know, g-get you anything?"? Suddenly the little vampire froze as an all-too-familiar scent brushed across his face, causing him to tense as his eyes went wide.? "You.... you're b-bleedin', sir," Rabbit stammered, taking a step back.? He bit his lip, desperately fighting down the instinct to have his fangs emerge.? "Do you n-need help or somethin'?" The Door Between Two Worlds [Roue and Rabbit] (closed)
Roue Windmere was as normal as any other wizard in the magical city of Geffen, a town home to its myriads of mage and wizard guilds.? Its center was punctuated by a looming giant, aptly named, Geffen Tower, a host to Rune Midgard's largest collection of magical tomes and scrolls; a location on every budding mage's to-do list as it also housed the magic academy.? Despite being built on an island in the midst of a giant lake as a measure of safety, it was open to any and all visitors who wished to be surrounded by ancient knowledge and powerful magic.? But Geffen was not the focus of this story.? In fact, it's been 5 years and then some since Roue had stepped foot in the same town that was his birthplace.
Normal as he may have seemed, Roue was an elf and he was on the run for his life ever since he left.? Relentlessly pursued by his maddened parents, there was not a moment where he stayed in one place for too long.? A week or two at the most, always paranoid and looking over his shoulders.? This time was no different.? Yet again, the knights and assassins were hot on his heels as he ran through the streets of Einbroch, the famed city of steel and home to a populous blacksmiths guild.? The Kafra warp brought him here but as soon as his feet touched the cobblestone, he took off like a bat out of hell.? The air was rife with the chocking smog created by the mixture of steel exhaust and the nearby coal plants, so much so that Roue was coughing with every leap he took.? Try as he might to cover his mouth with the fringes of his wizard's cape, it was not enough to mask the smell nor the smoke that filled his lungs.? His eyes wildly looked for a corner, some corner or an alley that he could dive into but where?? He's never been to Einbroch and so wasn't familiar with the layout at all.? So how was he, a wizard who wasn't build for all this running, and heavily wheezing to boot, meant to escape his would-be captors? "Crap, crap, crap! *cough cough*" he coughed out, sliding to a halt in the middle of the city square.? He turned around as his eyes widened as the sight of his unwelcome entourage, like a pack of wild beasts, heading straight for him.? There was no time to think, no time to make a plan and an ice wall was only going to hold them back so long.? Roue was running out of time.? He raised his hand and chanted a quick spell, waving his hand over the area in a horizontal arc in front of him.? A mere second later, the ground rumbled as a water main exploded below the cobbled stone and shot out of the ground in a highly pressured spurt.? Just as quickly, the water began to coalesce into an ice wall, but before it even had a chance to grow tall enough to hide him out of sight, an assassin threw a well targeted kunai at Roue.? The wizard dodged, or at least attempted to, as the sharpened piece of diamond shaped steel wizzed by his side in bullet time.? Luckily, he only felt it scrape his side, but no pain, cutting off a chunk of his cape.? Frowning, but wasting no more time and with the wall hiding him at least temporarily, he turned around and ran into a brown colored cloud of smog that was sliding across the ground. There!? An alley!? He peeked over his shoulders, hearing but not yet seeing his pursuers.? He dipped into the narrow pathway, coughing up a storm, his lungs crying out for mercy.? No, be silent!? For crissakes, stop coughing Roue! he screamed in his head.? He tried to jam some of his cape into his mouth, diminishing the sound of his coughing but not stopping any of it.? He was not just running out of time, he was running out of energy.? Stopping for a second to try and catch his breath, Roue then half stumbled, half ran through the dimly lit pathway, using his arm to hold onto the wall as his eyes tried to adjust to the sudden darkness.? The loosely strewn garbage didn't help any either, threatening to stumble him and that it accomplished as he came upon a stray piece of pipe jutting out of a suspicious looking pile.? Before he could even react, his left leg collided with and caught onto the pipe, and for that brief moment, he quite literally flew forward as there was nothing else to stop his momentum.? Except the nice brick wall which he tackled head on. "Argh!...that *cough* really, really *coughcough* smarts," he winced, nearly every word punctuated by his cough.? Disoriented and now in pain, Roue's hand flew up to try and get himself up when it alighted to the dead end's wall.? His eyes widened as his heart sank faster than an anchor in the ocean.? "No, no...no no no no no no!" he half whispered, sitting up as slid his hands over the wall.? As much as he didn't want to believe it, it was as solid as the ground that he was occupying.? In his disbelief, he didn't realize that he stopped breathing and as his lungs forced him to inhale, he started coughing up a storm just as he heard a quite loud "I hear him!? He must in this alley!? This way!" Wasting no time in standing up, Roue pinned his back against the dead end wall, gasping as he tried to think of something, anything.? He was trapped, like a mouse being advanced upon by a pack of rabid cats.? He could hear the vicious assassin's hoarse laugh as they hastened to reach this narrow alleyway.? There was no way out, so he started preparing for a fight he knew would end with either his capture or his last breath.? Just then, he felt the wall behind him recede a bit, an action which caused him to jump back in surprise, turning around to see no longer just a wall, but an ornately carved door where there was only brick.? His eyes, now more adjusted to the dim light could make out some minute details, the carvings of unfamiliar words softly glowing in the darkness.? Was the door always there or was he imagining things?? Was he already dead and this was his purgatory?? Perhaps he was hallucinating now.? His hand automatically moved down, his fingers alighting on a rounded, brass-colored knob that he tried turning, his heart quickening in response.? No movement, so he desperately tried again.? A single hand too weak, he now used both and tightly gripping the knob, turned it further to the left and pushed.? The door groaned and creaked, but it opened and with it came a scented, but fresh breath of air.? Turning his head to inhale, Roue was broken out of his stupor as the narrow path darkened even more as a pack of towering knights entered the alley. "There he is!? Get 'im!"? Time seemed to slow down as the towering giants broke into a run.? Not wasting this chance, Roue turned towards the door, it giving way much easier now and slipped inside, immediately shutting it it behind him, immediately bracing both hands as he prepared to push back.? He felt the door violently vibrate as the knights slammed their armored fists against the frame, shouting something loud but muffled, but the more they did it, the quieter it got and the less and less he felt the door twitch until it all just stopped.? Not one to question his inanimate savior, Roue placed his head against the cool material, taking quite a few deep breaths in an effort to calm himself when the sounds of distant, pleasing music and the loud tinkling of glasses being shuffled filled his ears.? Wait a minute...he turned around and at once received a shock at the sight before him. He stood at the far end of a darkened corner of a bar.? The rest of the space was filled with rounded tabled and equally ornate chairs, some filled with patrons and some with naught but air.? There was light for sure, but it was soft and dim, so as to keep a soothing, sort of muted environment.? Various torches lined the walls which were not wood as he expected but metal worked and stuck into supporting beams? There was no fire inside but within the yellow glass was a shining round orb.? All sorts of smells filled his nose, delicate scents of different types of wines, succulent meats, punctuated by the atmospheric scents of what he thought was pine intermixed with tones of primrose and lilac.? Overwhelmed by where he was, Roue didn't even notice how all the patrons stopped their conversation to turn and look at this new visitor, their conversation changing from previously lively tones to a more hushed discussion.? Suddenly he felt a sharp twinge on his left side, wrapping his right hand around to try and soothe the pain.? It must've been from all the running he did, he reasoned, having been on his feet since the morning.? He stooped a bit more forward, closer to the light of the candles as he spoke to the barhand who was curiously eyeing him as he kept wiping the myriad of glasses in front of his person. "<Wh-where am I?? What is this place?>" he asked the man, but only received a look of confusion and a brief sniff in Roue's general direction.? He was starting to feel slightly light-headed and gripped the bar's edge even harder, his breathing becoming a bit ragged. (Tag Rabbit) P.S. the <> around Roue's words are to indicate he's speaking in a language unknown to the inhabitants of this place. |
