Arbeter Ring/Workers Circle invitation to measure area interest
----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Larry Broun, The Workers Circle <info@...> To: "yiddishdc@..." <yiddishdc@...> I'm Larry Broun and I live in Washington DC. Like you, I've participated in Workers Circle activities and their programs involving Yiddish culture and social justice. In recent years, much of the Workers Circle activity has been online or, when in-person, located in New York, so I'm reaching out to determine if you have an interest to meet locally in the District-Maryland-Virginia area in support of Workers Circle activism. To explore the possibilities, I hope you'll join me for an online "meet and greet" conversation with Workers Circle members and friends in the DC-area on Thursday, July 29 at 7 PM ET. Whether your interest is to meet socially with like-minded friends, to support Workers Circle social justice activities here in the Nation's Capital, or provide opportunities to share Yiddish culture, we'd like to get to know you and hear from you. We'll be joined by Noelle Damico, Director of Social Justice, to learn about upcoming opportunities to take action together. With our nation's continuing struggle to strengthen our democracy amid attacks on voting rights, the urgency of passing a federal $15 minimum wage, and the moral necessity of protecting immigrants, there couldn't be a better time for us to gather. I hope you'll join us on July 29 from 7-8 PM ET. Please register today so we know you're coming and feel free to extend this invitation to others who seek to share our cultural and social values. Register at : https://theworkerscircle.salsalabs.org/DCAreaVirtualMeetandGreet/index.html

Zoom about Yiddish poet Avrom Sutzkever's prose 4/22
----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Alex Weiser | YIVO Institute <yivomail@...> To: Yiddish of Washington <yiddishdc@...> Sent: Tuesday, March 16, 2021, 12:10:48 PM EDT Subject: Largely unknown prose of Yiddish poet Avrom Sutzkever translated into Englishive on Zoom April 22 Thursday, April 22 | 1:00pm (ET) SUTZKEVER ESSENTIAL PROSE Live on Zoom. Book Talk | Sutzkever Essential Prose brings the largely unknown prose of seminal Yiddish poet Avrom Sutzkever to English readers in new translations by Zachary Sholem Berger. In these works, Sutzkever blurs the lines between fiction, memoir, and poetry; between real and imagined; between memory and metaphor. He offers haunting scenes drawn from a vast imagination and from the unique life he lived—his youth in Siberia and Vilna, his trauma as a partisan fighter and a survivor of the Holocaust, and his post-war life as a Yiddish poet in Israel. Join us for a conversation celebrating this new book with translator Zachary Sholem Berger and scholars Miriam Trinh and Karolina Szymaniak, moderated by Justin Cammy. https://yivo.org/Sutzkever-Essential-Prose In Partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Voices of Hope: Artists in Times of Oppression. Co-sponsored by the Yiddish Book Center.
