Re: Bird sighting
Great, Karen. I've had a couple in the Dells over the years. One good thing to watch for is the tendency to cock the tail up while hovering (see Sibley). Cheers, Walt On Sun, Apr 11, 2021 at 4:28 PM Jim O'Neil <jandkoneil@...> wrote:

Bird sighting
About 4:15 p.m., I saw two female hummingbirds come to one of my feeders. One was an Anna's but the other was definitely smaller, with some streaking on the lower, central throat and rufous flanks.? Green back.? I believe it was a Calliope Hummingbird. Karen O'Neil |

Willow Lake
New arrivals at the lake, at least for me, are five breeding plumage American Avocet and two Franklin's Gulls. Right now these birds are in the northern half of the lake between the boat dock and the zoo area.

Barrow's Still at Watson
?3 Goldeneye are visible from the Watson Lake overlook this afternoon, despite the wind.? I believe the two females are Common Goldeneye, but they are diving quite a bit.??

Barrow's Goldeneye
There was a male Barrow's Goldeneye in the central part of Watson Lake this morning at ~10am --- out from the main boat dock.? It was actively diving with several Lesser Scaup and a female Goldeneye that I was not sure of the i.d. It has a very pronounced, crescent shaped white region between the eye and bill, as opposed to the more rounded white spot of a Common Goldeneye.? Also, the back/wings have more black than a COGO.? See attached photos. Steve Burk |

Pelican follow-up
The lone American White Pelican (N09) is the only one I saw this morning on Willow Lake, after ~40 pelicans came and went yesterday (see attached photo).? Be aware, however, that the tags that are very prominent in this photo often can disappear for long periods of time beneath the wing feathers.? I originally notified the research group in Utah about pelican N09 on Oct.19. Steve |

Re: American White Pelicans
Diane and I saw the same 40 pelicans, by count, and when they flew off the lake, two remained. Don't know if one was our resident. All on our ebird report for the lake. On Thu, Mar 18, 2021 at 10:59 AM Walt Anderson <waltandersonAFC@...> wrote:

Thanks, Steve. I saw the loner yesterday. May not be lonely any longer!? An Osprey scared up the mass of shovelers yesterday. w On Thu, Mar 18, 2021 at 10:31 AM Steve Burk <burkstsu@...> wrote:

American White Pelicans
This morning I photographed (from the northside) a group of about 40 American White Pelicans clustered tightly together on the southwest shore of Willow Lake.? Since this is a favorite location of pelican N09 who spent the winter in Prescott, I assume he/she is among this group.? In fact, N09 may be the reason they landed there. Now it will be interesting to see if N09 migrates onward with them.? I'll post a photo on eBird. Steve Burk |

Re: Sandhill Cranes
Sandhill Cranes at Willow? Lake this morning.? Viewed from south shore, cottonwood grove.? Cranes were foraging in a tight group to the west-southwest.? They stood upright when an adult Bald Eagle flew over, but then returned to feeding.? First saw at 11:25, still there at 12:05 when I left.

American Tree Sparrow
Just an update to say that the American Tree Sparrow is still at Badger Springs Wash. This morning, it was in the regularly reported spot, just up the wash from the trailhead, where someone has marked the point in the wash with two crossed sticks.

Sandhill Cranes
I was at Willow Lake this afternoon. The Sandhill Cranes were very visible foraging to the east of Cottonwood Peninsula along the current west shore of the main lake.
Along the trail/road that goes south of the peninsula, there was a porcupine perched in a tree on the west side of the trail. A photographer there said there are actually three porcupines. Brian Nordstrom |
