Red-eyed Vireo
Observed this vireo, who has been singing steadily all morning, in the willows and cottonwoods next to the Playa parking lot in Granite Basin.??

Thank you for this info. Yesterday afternoon (05.16.2024), I found the loon out on the lake around here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/5ZT4f8TiL5vbVx4U7.

Carly Taylor of the Natural History Institute reported this bird (with two photos) to me on May 10, so it's been around for a while. Re: White Pelicans
I drove by both the north and south ends of Willow lake at about 4:00-4:30 and did not see the pelicans.? I also checked at Watson Lake and did not see any.? There are a number of boaters/kayakers on the lake and I wonder if that caused them to fly off? -Matt Hinton On Sun, Apr 7, 2024 at 10:05?AM Richard Balland <rballandg@...> wrote:

update: pelicans
I arrived at the parking area near the zoo at 9:35 am and the pelicans were sitting on the water nearby in the cove where they remained until close to !0:00.? Without being disturbed, they then spontaneously took to the air. I estimated there were?about 130. Evidently the?air had warmed?sufficiently?for them to catch a thermal. Steve |

White Pelicans
I can make out a large number (perhaps >100) of White Pelicans from our back patio at the far west end of Willow Lake (at 9:15 am).? I am going to drive over to near the zoo now. Steve Burk |

I'm guessing the friendly man with the Swarovski binocs was Eric Moore, owner of the Lookout. He's probably on this email list and could confirm that guess.? -Matt Hinton On Fri, Apr 5, 2024 at 3:57?PM David Sackett via <dhsackett=[email protected]> wrote:

Green Heroin
Yesterday, Apr 5, I was hiking on the West Watson Lake path, and encountered a tall birder with a cheerful expression and a pair of Swarovski glasses.? He tried to point out a Green Heron he had spotted in the weeds but I couldn't pick it out.? The bird flew out of view and my guide continued north.? I followed the bird south and circled around to get closer,? I eventually spotted it and got a couple of good pictures.? (see attached). I am attaching a picture in hope it will reach the gentleman who helped me.?? If this note is inappropriate, I apologize. Thank you ?dhsackett

I seem to be acting as forwarder lately. This message comes from Ryan Crouse who believes he heard a Gray Hawk at the wildlife pond in Watson Woods just now. He would welcome a confirmation, of course.

Update on Mew Gull
The Mew Gull continues this afternoon at Willow, often drifting on the water near some Ring-billeds.? Again, too distant for photos, but three of us studied it through the scope.? All features seem to match with a 2nd winter Mew Gull.? And, based on the new obs, I have to make a correction -- the gull does seem to have a dark spot or band close to the tip of its yellow bill ---- this also fits with 2nd?year winter Mew.? It seems to be the same size as a Coot. If it stays in the same area:? After parking at south shore, take the main trail to the right, then down to the water's edge. Scope necessary. |

Mew Gull
This morning at about 10:45am I saw what I believe is a Mew Gull sitting in the middle of Willow Lake.? I had parked at South Shore and was scoping the lake from the water's edge.? I got fairly good views through my scope, but was only able to get blurry photos due to the large distance (see attached samples). I was able to use nearby coots and buffleheads to see it was comparable to their size.? The first thing that caught my attention was the pronounced white crescent that separated?the gray back from the black tail. The bill was yellow with a small marking (not black) that I couldn't fully make out. The black tail had small white markings.? When I looked down for a moment at about 11:05am, the gull was gone when I looked back up.? I believe there is a very good chance it is still there. |
