N1S 2-10-2

I got one of these a while back , detailed nicely . One area gave me fits tho' , the pilot and big air tank . The clearance to the foot boards was way to skimpy . So I played with it for ever until I figured it out !! The pilot screws to the frame , then screws into that big air tank . OK if ANY of these are stripped threads ? You go thru' the frame into a low profile nut to secure the pilot . Then add plastic to the frame to secure the air tank in place . I did that because the frame and the tank were both stripped out ??? Have fun , eh ??? Henry

I have the boiler, frame extension, decapod chassis and tender but no air tank or other detail parts. I am sure I will never lay my hands on that original Cary air tank but should be able to scrounge the rest.

Do you want me to measure the tank ??? ?Henry ?

I looked at the No.East Rails PRR steam roster pix , that fat tank is doable with your own stuff and skills . Air lines? both sides , ''skinny'' hold down bands ? All possible !! Henry?

Yeah. If you don't mind. That'd be helpful. Did you acquire this as a kit or did you pick up the detail parts separately? Do you happen to have a parts list?

Hey Mr. Jeff ! I don't know if the other post got there BUT , the tank dimensions are 3/8'' by 1'' very close [ 6mm.by 24mm.and 18mm. between the hold down straps . Make the ends ''Plain Jane '' , not a fancy beer keg like Cary did ? Look at the Northeast Rails PRR steam site You'll see. I planto add more details to the front , railings ,walkways ?? You can still get MOST of the Modern PRR details , except the big buda ross generator , it's platform? ?? Old Cal Scale # was 2000 something [ good lick ] . Give me a shout any old time , sorry it took too long !!? ?Henry H.?

Jeff then you have your work cut out for you. You need a big air tank and must build a platform to mount it on,?
?here is one as built with cary supplied parts. it just doesn't have the right front pilot.

Here's another look at the N1sa I made It was just a cabless boiler when i got at a train show. I used a long distance tender and a cab from a bachmann K4 that fell apart. My pilot I scratch built..

A look at my Carry Santa-Fe type PRR N1sa? #1736 front pilot and a view of its long haul Penn-Line tender. You can see the Penn-line plate on the lower terder rear.

Minor matter but Decapod usually refers to a 2-10-0.
The 2-10-2 is more often referred to as a Santa Fe type.? I have heard?
that the Southern Pacific did at some time call the 2-10-2 a Decapod?
but as far as I am aware, this was the only road that had that usage.

The Espee was not about to name any of their locomotives Santa Fe, or for that matter, Northern (Pacific).

Thank you Chuck, my mistake! I posted photos and info on a N1s type loco in a N1s thread and typed in the name decapod. I am definitely not the sharpest tack in the box. At my age I'm just glad to be able to share stuff. Thanks again for the nice way you worded it. Oh by the way deca refers to the number 10. TO not waste a chance to share more here is a photo of a Westside Brass N1sa.

Thanks for sharing these photos. I have many parts for building one of these but still missing a few. The hardest item to find was that big fat air tank on the front but I actually found one for sale from Greenway. Am awaiting it's arrival (sometime in May). They did not, however, have the platform on top of the tank... well... they didn't have one for sale but they said they'd check and get back to me...? Anyway, I am curious about the chassis of this N1. Did you use a Gem N1 for the detail parts and the chassis??

Sorry. Haven't been on here for a while. I just saw your older post about having to scratch build the platform.?

My big air tank can be from any material. Brass plumbing pipe, plastic tubing, wood, card stock tubing. Small pipes are just wire. flat surfaces, plastic. The ladder was something in my parts box.

What is the "atter"?

Walter

Walter, a atter is a ladder when one has missspeled the word and missed putting in the L in a place without spell check to catch the mistakes.
