Modeling NYC Steam, Was Re: RE: Re: The latest issue e of the NKP Modeler¡¯s Notebook is here!
John, Henry, List, I changed the subject to better reflect what we're talking about and I trimmed the post to keep digest readers copacetic.? John, I really like your suggestions below.?? Now that I've had my post-breakfast caffeine, I remembered that the New York Central RR Historical Society has a nice New York Central Modeler publication which covered kitbashing NYC steam engines, including the H5 and H7 Mikados.? NYC's H5 Mikados were sold to or built for many NYC subsidiaries, including the Nickel Plate (an NYC subsidiary until 1916). Link below is to the index page for the NYC Modeler.?? The NYC Modeler's first quarter 2012 edition has an article by Tom Bailey that introduces his models and has a bit about kitbashing an NYC H7 from a Mantua Mikado.?? The NYC Modeler 3rd quarter 2012 continues the H7 kitbash.?? The NYC Modeler 2nd quarter 2013 finishes the H7 saga and has shorter sections about kitbashing an H5 from a John English 2-8-2. Doug, That¡¯s a pretty straight boiler. Some NYC modelers have used the Mantua Mikado¡¯s for NYC¡¯s near straight boilered Mikes. From there it becomes a matter of how detailed you want it. For me the cylinders look heftier than Mantua¡¯s and the H5s have baker valve gear. The sand box would have to changed or much modified. I¡¯m not sure about the steam dome as I don¡¯t a Mantua handy right now. From there it¡¯s a matter of how much of the piping and appliances you want to put on it. Oh yes, that tender¡. John Hagen ? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDoug, Thanks for doing all the stuff I say everyone should do but I didn¡¯t. Like changing the subject and cropping the posts. What I laughingly refer to as my mind seems to get more laughable every day. I do have an official diagnosis of CRS (Can¡¯t Remember Sh¡ Stuff) and it shows. Also for pointing out the NYC Modeler site. I know it exists and have downloaded all of the 2017 issues but you provided the issues that involved kit-bashing die cast models. I am downloading several more issues. I don¡¯t do so much of that anymore (who said retirement slows more time for trains) but I still WANT to do more. And I¡¯m a big fan of Mantua steam probably because my first locomotive was a Mantua Mike given to as a Christmas present in 1949, first year of production. Plus, they are plentiful, rugged and were cheap. Nowadays they have crept up in cost but still are okay for those wanting to kit bash, especially with the cost of new models going out of sight. Just a couple of items regards finding Mantua mikes. They all will work for these projects. But, for the best drives you either have to go for very early or very late production. The first two versions, covering production from 1949 to 1953 uses a DC70 (or DS71, as I said memory..) motor with a driveshaft to an enclosed worm with self aligning bearings. Then came the Tyco when they switched to a smaller motor with the worm mounted of the motor shaft. Still decent runners and there is thousands out there. In late production, under the Mantua name again, they came out with their ¡°Power Drive¡± models that returned to the worm design. John Hagen ? From: yardbirdtrains@... [mailto:yardbirdtrains@...]
