Anyone have a couple of Varney F Unit front* trucks
*so this is the truck that's geared that is driven off the rear truck via universal shaft.
Mine both; A&B units are spring belt models... gonna mod them to power the front truck too on both. Btw, is it true the front trucks on the Varney switcher and F-units excluding the side frames are the same?
Spring drive, with three grooves, were on the three piece gear boxes, same as the Brute drivers.
The one piece gears boxes with the open bottoms (i.e. Walt Disney or Mickey Mouse) were the same for F units and switchers. Both trucks.
I did not realize that until maybe 25 years ago (My first HO loco was given to me for Christmas 1949 so 25 years is relatively recent) when a friend gave me a Varney eight wheel drive switcher and I didn’t understand why there was so little space between the trucks. My Athearn switcher and my friends Hobbytown/Cary SW1500 had much more space.
Duh, it only took about 10 seconds after looking at each from the underside to see why.
