drum kit differences and workflow advice

Hi Bill,

I don’t know if this helps but there’s a QY100 List Book that lists all of the instruments and hopefully the drum kit by influence.

If it’s not in the file section of the group then it’s probably easy to find on Google by searching for it by name and PDF.

You could also tweak one of the existing drum Kits using the ADR and cutoff resonance… though those settings probably affect the entire track so you might have to split out your drum sounds in that case.

Cheers,
Eric

sounds like there's only one potential cr78 sound, a kind of claves. there's a kind of pitched bamboo sound with it, and the rest are pretty regular accoustic kit.

Yeah. The CR-78 is hard to re-create even if you have good samples because the “latin” sounds are triggered by the internal clock.
I would take the electronic percussion kit and add effects. The main thing about that particular drum mix is a (cheap analog) delay with a sweeping LFO that’s bending the pitch.
Compare with Fun Boy Three’s The Lunatics (Have Taken Over the Asylum).
Ultimately you might want to get those sounds from an external device and just use the QY100 as a temporary rhythm track. That’s why I am adding MIDI to my Rhythm Ace FR6M.

Best wishes,
Ben

Thanks everyone - I found the Data List and printed it out and the differences are very well documented. That's why I deleted my initial post, but I guess it made it through.

Last night I cut up the original Mad World intro drums and pitched them around to compare with the CR-78 samples I have.
I was considering extracting the XG samples from the QY100 and to study/compare them with the Mad World intro to see how close I can get.

But for now I'll try to recreate them to a "close enough" state and not get bogged down in the details.

Excellent! It’s 2023 and the QY100 is doing Mad World. I don’t feel quite so old.

You know “Mad World” is from 1982, ?right? ;) That’s 41 years ago!

just did a search for mad world.mid ;-)

these can be fun. i have some big zips of 'midis'. haven't been in there for a long time.
dropping a midifile on cubase opens it up onto its tracks, and then you can export individual tracks or bits of them.
i took some little bits and imported them to patterns in Orion, assigning them to VSTis.
next part would be to get these into a Style, and i was looking at CASMedit .. ran out of steam at that point having had a look at several 'CASM' freewares.
eg: a Style is like a midi file, but with section headers (something like that..)
i think this was because i hadn't got my head around directly loading *.mid files from the CF card. seem to remember the QYdatafiler software can do that, but the card uses Style format to load into Pattern. - was i being dense, rather than importing onto Song tracks? (haven't used qy100 for a long time :-/ )

lol anyone any good at coding? have a simple little utility for dropping *.mid files onto the 6 sections of a QY style ?

I never imported SMF into the QY100. (in the QY700 it is built in functionality) I think your fastest route is just record the tracks from the sequencer.

Some SMFs can take up a lot of memory?

I often import the entire SMF from a Smart Media Card whilst in Song Mode
Then change to pattern mode and extract the main parts (Intro/Verse/Chorus) from the SMF Song?and paste them into individual pattern/styles: Intro, A, B, Fill in A/B, Fill in B/A and Ending?
I think it is the "get phrase" in Job Menu

Then once you have Intro/Verse/Chorus in say patterns of 8 bars you can assign and Edit a Voice in each track and then create a new Sequence in Song Mode - then delete the original SMF and your new song will take up less memory than the original Midi File and you can lengthen or shorten the Song if required.

Oh nice, I didn't think of looking for a MIDI. I think I might just use it as reference and "transcribe" it into the QY as an exercise.?Looks like I may get this done in time for my group singing lessons.

it's fun listening to those midifile collections :-) had some of the better ones as ringtones at one point.

yes that's it: load an SMF into Song mode, and 'get phrase'/'put phrase'.
or else slave QY to computer and record the midi.

hey: what free alternatives to Cubase, for dropping an SMF onto an arrange page and splitting it out onto tracks?
i'm trying to think of an old midi sequencer, -but it wasn't Krystal Audio Engine, just checked-
or else there was a free cutdown Cubasis that just did midi? (that you don't have to register etc.?)
having a browse to see what's around now...
it's a bit like sampling, take little snippets of midi to recycle.

Anvil Studio, that was it. going to install this 2013 version, see what it's got.

nah, horrible :-) still looking.

"what free alternatives to Cubase, for dropping an SMF onto an arrange page and splitting it out onto tracks?"

Cakewalk.?

This is apparently dependent on the MIDI.

Reaper should be able to do it with relatively few hiccups.

Well, while that is technically true, in reality due to theoretical time displacement (because of the the ever increasing speed of our expanding universe) anyone over the age of 50 would perceive it as only about 10 to 15 years ago.‘

“some exclusions apply, see your local physicist for details”

How can I argue with that!
But we are old, nonetheless?
