DX7II as a controller for modules (PB, MW, CS1, CS2)
Hi, If the keyboard is having no effect on your module, you may not have them set to the same MIDI chanel. Hit the EDIT button then press button number 32 (MIDI 1) press it again and again until you see "Channel messages" in the right hand side of your screen. Now you can change the Transmit channel "Trns ch". As for CS1 and CS2: While you are in EDIT mode press number 32 (MIDI 1 again) until you see "Controll number" in the right hand side of your screen. Now you can use the left arrrow key to highlight "CS >1" or CS these controll signals. If these controll signals are sent to the DX they will afffect the parameters that CS1 or CS2 are set to affect. There is a problem with using the DX for a controller. Velosity and perhaps other parameters only send values up to 99. The normal MIDI range goes up to 127. If you have a sequencer or another program that allows you to see the MIDI messages that you are sending, you may want to check whether the DX sends the full rannge of Mod wheel and pitch bender messages. It may be a good idea to check the sliders too. I hope you are able to get your setup to work. Digest Number 68(Soundlib)(DX7II editors)
The only DX7II editors that I know, cost money. Unisyn is the editor that I have. People say good things about Soundiver. I think that Midiquest probably edits the DX7II too. Software that was written for the original DX7 may communicate correctly with the DX7II. I think I heard that Yamaha engineered the DX7II to send two packets of data. One packet is compatible with the original DX7. The other packet contains the extra data for the DX7II. This would explain how Soundlib sends DX7 data and ignores the extra DX7II parameters. I hope you find an editor that works. -Nathan

FM Heaven?
4
I've heard of a VSTinstrument called FM Heaven which is supposed to be an emulation of the DX7 + friends. Has anyone had a chance to play with this to stack its sound up against the real thing? I know that emulations are never perfect but any specific quirks or missing features?

Inside DX7
2
Hello I'm new to this list. But not to the DX series. However there is one thing I'd like to ask. I recently did my annual check up of my rig, and whils cleaning the DX inside I found 4 potentiometers which I hadn't seen before. One adjusted the display. One seemed to "Tweak" the oscillators making them more crisp. One I have no idea what it did. And the fourth seemed to adjust the battery level. At it's lowest the battery level read 1.8 V and at it's highest it read 3.2 V This to me is very wierd. Has anyone seen this? What does it really do. And the Third, what does that do? Well, The Dx Rules. Oh, by the way It's an Original DX7 I own. (among others)...

Brian Eno patches.
2
There are four of Brian Eno's favorite patches on the patch sheet section of Keyboard magazine February 1987. Kalimba 2,Tamboura,Glide, Violin 3. I don't have a scanner set up or I'd scan it and send it. Check your local libraries. Don't forget the library of a local university or college. The local university here has a collection of Keyboard from the present to back in the '80s. -Nathan ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! new to list, need help...
7
Hi, I am getting my DX7 delivered tomorrow. I know what to expect. I've never done FM synthesis before but I've studied waveforms and how they interact (data comms at college:) so I understand the concepts involved. I don't have a computer at home but I may be getting one soon. I understand that Vangelis used a DX7 (?). Does anyone know where I can find patches of his sounds. Also, does anyone know if there's any software that can play patches on a PC so I know what they sound like? Or am I talking a lot of crap, you'll have to forgive me... I'm new to this stuff... Thanks, Nick:)

CX5M, Help needed......
2
I am looking into buying a CX5M for live use, but i was wondering if any of you might be able to help me with some questions the reveiw pages would'nt answer. I know this PC does FM Synthesis, but when interfacing with a DX keyboard, what options does it provide?? I mean can I alter all parameters???? Does it have a sequencing program? What does the layout look like? I am so used to cakewalk and Acid that I am afraid to leave them. Does this particular PC already have a floppy disk drive (3.5) or is like the atari where you have to add on everything??? I have a W5 I transfer live programming to when I go to a show, and I run the additional sequences by turning off one channel on the W5 and running the DX off of that, cuz the W5 doesnt use Device Id's like unisyn would if I brought my PC live. Would the CX5M eliminate the need for me to eliminate this one channel on my W5??? Does it use Device Id's?? (I figure it does cuz it is made by Yamaha.) I dunno, I am trying to use as many voices for my live programming, and the sixteen channels I have access to on the W5 are icing on the cake you know? I only get one channel on the DX21, and one channel on my DTX2 (that I feel is worth using since it is just a drum module, and the drums are all on Channel Ten). One more thing before I go, does anyone know what exactly the synthesis on the CS6x is all about? I read somewhere it is using like three types of synthesis: Wave Form, FM, and Sampling, as well as this new Digital Formulation or something like that.. I have too many questions Dont I??? MIDI Quest vs. Sound Diver, others?
5
OK, so here's my deal. I added a bunch of new gear to my home studio, and I'm looking for a good editor/librarian program (for PC). I've played around with MIDI Quest 7.0 and Sound Diver a little, but not thoroughly enough to prefer one over the other. (Although I was getting slightly better results with Sound Diver.) I'm using a DX-100 and 2 FB-01's, and having a difficult time getting everything to work at the same time. If I just hook up one device, editing is no prob, but all hell breaks loose when I hook 'em all up together. I thought that all the channels were correct, but I guess not, if it only recognizes 1 of the FB's. The path was something like this: PC MIDI OUT -> FB-01 IN, FB-01 OUT -> DX-100 IN, DX-100 OUT -> FB-01 #2 IN, FB-01 #2 OUT -> PC MIDI IN. I've tried this several different ways, but this seemed to be the simplest. (One day at work I spent my lunch hour drawing little charts. :) When I figure out how to program all this stuff, I plan to do some live shows, with a QX3 sequencer (which is much easier to set up). Any pointers for my programming dilemma? I'm still new to MIDI, so anything other than RTFM would be helpful. ;) Thanks in advance, Scott

TX81z and SoundDiver users ...
5
Hello, I am new to this group and new to hardware synthesisers altogether. I discovered synthesis through software versions and now i want to buy a TX81z i saw for a decent price ( ?50) I am planning to use it with SoundDiver from Emagic which i got hold of already. I saw on Emagic's site that there is a bug in the TX81 os versions under 1.4 ( not inclusive) which prevents sound editing. Is there anyone using SoundDiver with a TX81z by any chance ? Does sound editing ( sysex transfer ) work with other programs ? The os on the tx i am going to buy is version 1.1 by the way .. I really want to edit the sounds and use ones made by others so i need to know this. I would greatly appreciate any help and comments on this .. Thanks in advance ! PS: Native Instruments (http://www.native-instruments.com ) is going to release a software emulation of the DX7 called FM7. In theory there should be no difference between the sound of the original and its recreation, since i understand a DX7 is a "digital synth". Well of course, the D/A's used to be 12bit, but i don't think my soundcard's 4 extra bits can hurt .. I don't know if they implemented a bit reduction feature to take this into account though Let's wait and .. hear

Yeah, I wish I had more MIDI in's on my PC
I'd love to have some giant MIDI patchbay, but I'm too cheap (hence the DX-100 and FB-01's ;) I've tried it a few different ways, but the computer didn't recognize what I like to call "FB-02" (sorry, I know that's not funny to anyone else ;) I'll give it another try with some of your suggestions. Thanks for the help! Cheers, Scott

How about this?
OK, I've got a new setup idea that might work. How does this sound? PC OUT -> DX-100 IN DX-100 THRU -> FB-01 IN FB-01 THRU -> "FB-02" IN DX-100 OUT AND "FB-02" THRU -> MERGE IN (2 IN, 8 OUT) MERGE OUT -> PC IN * This is what I came up with after reading Summa's reply. If I've got this figured correctly, this should allow send and receive for all devices. Since the MIDI merge box will be receiving a THRU signal, can I also hook up my drum machine from one of its outputs? It looks good on paper, anyway. :)

DX7+midi messgs= Possible??

Not having the manual to my Dx7, i was wondering if the DX7 responds to Breath control, foot pedal, or any other midi controller messages and if i can assign these to different modulation destinations (like FM ammount or something) thanks for any help afforded. -aaron
