Woohoo! TX81Z
4
Wow! I've just got my hands on a TX81Z. I new I was missing something in my setup, and I thought that was a range of analogue gear ... but now I've stumbled accross FM ... I'm amazed. I always thought FM sounded rather weak ... classically 80'esque ... clasically FM soundcard weak. I remember the DX7 had some lovely sounds, but I didn't think they'd stand up to much in todays world of sample based synths and the whole heap of analogue gear which is now trendy. However, I immediately fell in love with the TX81. I'd heard the OS was horrid, and yet I could navigate my way around all the important options within seconds. Setting up the performance/multi- timbral side was easy, I love the basic way of routing sounds to individual ouputs, and the simple way of limiting polophony per part. The display is small, but incredibly clear for its age ... and the sounds (which I suspect are presets) are stunning. I know I can probably get much better out of this once I start playing with my own sounds ... Personally, I tend to write bleepy stuff, almost trancey, almost industrial ... and I'm sure this synth will be just what's needed for all those bleeps and distorted weirdness. - not to mention sub- harmonic basses and phasey pads. FuzzPiano happens to be the exact sound I've been looking for ... and all in a preset :) Anyway, enough enthusing ... I've been searching the web for patches, but all I can find so far are commercial patches for sale. I did find some TX81 patches contained in a few '.mid' files (sysex data) but when loaded into cakewalk and played - all my other gear responds (or at least acknowledges it's receiving midi data) but the TX81 doesn't do anything. Mem protect is off, and the TX will talk quite happily with sound-diver - so the whole midi side is fine. Would anyone happen to know where I can get sound-diver compatable patches for the Tx81Z? Or ... a way to get the synth to respond properly to sysex data embedded in a midi file... ? Any help would be appreciated ... ! Thanks, Steve (who still can't believe he picked up a TX81Z for ?65)

DX alternate Tuning Program?
Just found this on the file section under MISC: DX7 Alternate Tuning program Can anyone tell me anything about it? I am guessing it has to do with (hopefully) the microtunal abilities of the DX7II. I have a DX7S which has Microtuning ability. Is this for the mark I or the mark II? Tim

New DX owner
I just recently purchased a DX21. I like the synth alot, it works great with my W5. But besides all the great things it does I have stumbled across a few problems. #1- I was trying to find a tape drive with the original DIN pin connector, but I am having no luck. With the way my music is going, I feel it isnt wise to program each and everyone of my voices for live us onto the 32 voice ram (I think I would lose it too quick. So anyone know where I can get a tape drive?? #2- I was using Midiyoke to input some patches from this site, but the ones I could load only loaded to the first bank (A1 A2 and A3) the rest were garbled, not really voices at all (they didnt have labels). The patches that wouldnt load were only the patches above 4105 bytes. Anyone know why or how I could remedy this? That's about it, I figure if I cant get a tape drive, maybe someone can actually tell me how to fix these little problems. Thanx Fear http://www.mp3.com/dhivermort

Download troubles
Hi again, I just tried to download the DX7 sounds from the group archive, and it seemed that I can have only 3,3 Mo instead of 7 Mo. Is there any problem with the server ? I usually have no difficulties for downloading.

DX7 - IID problem
Hello! I'm new to this list and wanted to ask if anyone has an idea of what could be the problem with my DX7-IID synth. When I switch on the power I just hear a soft "tick" through my headphones (using lineout connected to a mixer) but the display never turns on and nothing works. My first thought was that this might be a battery problem but it indicates 3 volts (don't know if that's correct). I then checked the fuse next to the power supply and it seems ok. There has never been any problems at all with this synth and just one day it stopped working. Any ideas would be very appreciated. Regards, Johan

DX7 and MIDI Velocity
Hello I'm new to this list, but have been delving into the world of FM synthesis. I would like to know which DX synths do not send midi velocity to 127. I had heard some or most of the DX synths only translate a 100 midi velocity from the keyboard. Any insight on this? I'm also looking very seriously at a Nord Modular, because you can do some sort of FM/DX patch loading or sending- which would be really cool. Thanks for your help! Best Regards Scott Wilson

DX7 & DX7IIFD compatibility
2
Hi ! I'm new on this list. I'm a total beginner with sysex, and I wander if DX7 patches can be used with a DX7IIFD (I'm the lucky owner of this one). I tried once to use a DX7 sysex bank, and my DX7IIFD didn't want it. Is there something special to prepare DX7 banks before using them with DX7IIFD ? Is there a program that do it automatically ? Thanks in advance. Greetings to everyone. Gaarn Ghost.

DX7IID with E! battery replacement

hi folks... does anyone know if replacing a battery on the DX7IID with E! is difficult? should I do it myself... I'd hate to hurt this wonderful synth that I've owned since new. If you think I should get a tech... does anyone know of a qualified tech in Vancouver BC? cheers Steve

DX7IIFD Floppy question
2
Hi : I own one of these since 1988 ( or it was 87 ? )and once it gets burn ( Literally , by fire ) . I rebuilt it , but I lost the floppy drive . Yamaha Argentina asked for something like U$S 300 for the drive and I said Ok.... No drive. Now I'm wiser about computers and maybe sombody can tell me if a regular drive can do the job and how to connect it . Or... Does exist any program for reading the dx formatted disks and export the data to sound diver or just plain sysex ? regards

Looking for the 'Ian Boddy' voices for DX7
Many years ago, when the DX7 was king, Ian Boddy programmed some superb voices that were available direct from him, or via Sound on Sound magazine in the UK. Does anyone have a copy of these voices. I have checked with Ian Boddy himself, and he doesn't have a copy. -- Richard

MIDI problem with my SB Live Player 5.1
3
Hi everybody..... I'm french, so I hope you won't care of my ugly english writing... Last week, I've bought a SB Live Player 5.1 and have connected it to my DX7... 1st surprise: the keyboard doesn't work in direct play (in MIDI format). Sound seems to be disrupted (when it's short) and continuous (when it's a long sound). I can't use it in MIDI, but I could with my old SB 128 PCI...what happens, I don't know...the only thing I can say is that the link to the gameport is good (because when I connect my RX15 rythmbox, it works very well). And the Synth's of the card works great without using my DX7.... Hope you'll help me, and you have an answer....I'm fed up with re- installing drivers or W98........ Thank you very much and apologizes for my language....

Ears and advice
Hello, My (pseudo)name is Chris Angel. I live in Belgium and write electronic music for about 7 years. I try to give to my songs what, I think, is very important to me in Music : power, melody and feeling. To do this, I've chosen Roland Groove Box (MC-303 and 505), a Yamaha CS-1x and a DX7. I've recently created my artist page on mp3.com (www.mp3.com/chrisangel). I would be very happy if you could take a few minutes to listen to my songs and to give me your comments. Thank you very much, Chris.

Ivan, I'm not sure but I think you can load the patches from the floppy disk into memory banks on the DX7, then use SoundLib to export them as sysex. Jerry ps. your English is fine!

DX7II as a controller for modules (PB, MW, CS1, CS2)
2
Does anyone use the DX7II (i have a DX7IID) as a controller to control other synth-modules ? How do you set it up to send out PitchBend and ModulationWheel messages to the synth-module ? I have a Nord Rack 2, and it is set to receive PB and MW messages, but appearently the DX7II isn't, because it isn't working :) The DX7's PB and MW work on it's own sounds by the way, so it doesn't seem broken any way. p.s. the sliders called "CS1" and "CS2" can be used to send out selectable CC-numbers, or not ? Thanks !

Digest Number 68(Soundlib)

Hi Ivan, I believe that the author of Soundlib programed it with the information he had about the original DX7. The original DX7 didn't have a number of parameters that the DX7II has. For instance: the function of the Mod Wheel was a gobal setting on the DX7. The Mod wheel affected every patch in the same way , until you changed it. The DX7II saves an individual setting for the Mod Wheel in every patch. When a controller is assigned to modulate amplitude (Amod or EGbias), the DX7II (maabe the DX7 as well) lowers the amplitude of all the operators with an Amod setting. So your patches will not sound the same without their controller settings. I made a patch that uses the pitch envelope on the DX7II. On the DX7II you can change the range of the pitch envelope from 8 octaves down to 1/2 octave. When I load my patch from Soundlib the pitch envelope is always set to 8 octaves. I have to change it back to the 1 or 2 octave range. "Performances" were not a feature on the DX7 either. I don't have very much expierence with sysex utilities. A generic sysex utility might work fine with the DX7II. I hope you find somthing that works well. Mabe let us know when you do. -Nathan
