Not-so-dead DX7 Mark I - The saga continues... 22
Hi everyone - Just starting a new thread as the older one hit a dead end; not sure if people are actively checking this forum. Thankfully, my DX7 with E! is no longer dead. I have things partially working - and I think the answer was that the E! needed to be reseated and the contacts cleaned. But now, something else is going on - as the battery replacement seems to have zero effect. When it's been sitting, when I power it up, I get the "RAM is Corrupt!" error message from E! -- and I've lost all the settings. Plus, E! seems to behave a bit erratically with different symptoms each time (no MIDI, missing internal banks 8-10, etc.). If I keep it on and wait for the LED digit to change to "01" (maybe 4-5 seconds?), I can shut it off and turn it on again a second time - and then I won't get the same error message. But then, of course I've lost all the settings as I've said. So I'm thinking that the RAM and E! board may actually be fine, but somehow the first power-up doesn't have enough voltage to get started...and the second power-up then has enough voltage to get things to get rolling...but by then either the backup battery isn't applying enough voltage in there to keep everything stored in RAM - or it's losing the current elsewhere. BTW, the backup battery voltage appeared to be about 4.5V if I remember (as measured by E!), and the CR2032 battery was 3.5V. So I am wondering if the E! board may be fine, but the drop in voltage is screwing up E! with strange results upon rebooting. @aerobaticant - Are you saying that you think the diode may be the reason why it's losing the voltage upon power-down? Thanks to anyone who has any suggestion as to what to test or replace next!

Creating a RAM4 Compatible Cartridge 33
Hi All, I've been looking into the possibility of making a RAM4 compatible cartridge (For the DX7II etc) as it seems to be more popular than the RAM1 style I designed for the original DX7. Is there anyone in the UK (or Europe?) who would be prepared to lend me an original RAM4 cartridge for a few days, with the intention of opening it to study the insides? It would also be possible to glean most of the information I require from an ADP-1 adaptor. The main information I need to establish about the RAM4: Exact dimensions of the cartridge and its edge connector. Functionality of the CT0 and CT1 (cartridge type) pins.I already know from online photos that the connector has 34 pins as opposed to 28 but the pin lengths and spacings appear to be the same as the RAM1. From the DX7II schematic I have the pin-out information. CT0 and CT1 are used to tell the DX7 what type of cartridge is installed. If I could discover whether these pins are connected to (GND, +5V or left floating) in the RAM4 that would help a lot. I suspect that this will be different in the ADP-1 adaptor, the RAM4 cartridge and the DX7II ROM cartridge. As the RAM1 style cartridge will work in an ADP-1 adaptor my design would only need a new PCB outline with the new connector type to work basically. However I believe that the patches stored in the RAM4 cartridge from a DX7II have more information and therefore take twice the storage space. I take it the RAM4 holds 64 patches by default. Original RAM1 (DTC4W): 2 x X2816A devices = 2 x 2048 x 8 bits = 32 kbits = 32 patches of 1k. Original ROM cartridges (DCT8R): 1 x 2764-2 device = 8192 x 8 bits = 64 kbits = 2 banks of 32 patches. My cartridge design: 1 x AT28C256 device = 32768 x 8 = 256 kbits = 8 banks of 32 patches. Original RAM4: 2 x M5M5165 devices = 2 x 8192 x 8 bits = 128 kbits = 64 patches of 2k ? My possible design: 1 x AT28C256 device = 32768 x 8 = 256 kbits = 2 banks of 64 patches. Any thoughts?

MIDI sysex question 4
For the DX7 IIs (v1.3 OS), do these MIDI sysex commands do the following: 1) Parameter Change ($1B = Switch Remote) will "press" the panel buttons? a) Do I set ON (d=127) and then OFF (d=0) ? b) Leaving button ON would allow me to "press and hold" a button while "pressing" another? 2) This "switch remote" method would allow me to do the following: a) Select Voice (button 32) or Performance (button 37)? b) Save internal memory bank (Voice/Performance) to RAM cartridge (several buttons)? 3) Can I "bulk load" Voice/Performance MIDI sysex data directly to a RAM cartridge bank? Or bank needs to be loaded into Internal Voice/Performance memory first then saved to cartridge? I think that cartridge Micro Tuning and Fractional Scaling are supported, but not voice/performance? I did some searching prior to posting this and did not find my answers. But if there is a relevant post, please point me to it. Thanks for reading, Mike

TX81z issues with saving patches
Hello, Recently I bought an old TX81z, and have problems with saving patches at user bank I. When I press STORE button (and keep pressing) I select the available slot in user bank I, and when I release the STORE button usually nothing happens. The next step would be to confirm the copy with YES button, but I was available to reach that step only once in several dozens attempts. The problem might that some of the front buttons are little "skippy". The rest of the machine functions ok, software editing, sending sysex, battery, all ok. Thanx, Vlado

DX7 ROM Card with 256 x 32 patches 75
Hi everybody, I was fed up to boot the computer each time I wanted to try a new SYSEX...so I designed a ROM card for the DX7 built around a 27C801 EPROM ( 1MB ) and ended up with a perfectly working device able to store 256 x 32 = 4096 patches...whereof to stay awake late in the night before needing to erase and burn the EPROM again.... There's no mystery in my design, based upon the original ROM card circuitry supplied by Yamaha, which I extended the adressing bus with 8 additional lines controlled by DIP switches for highest adress bits, allowing selection of one of the 256 banks. I had to write a ( rough for now ) Python script to extract datas from SYSEXes ( basically to remove the MIDI-dedicated bytes ) and to build the .bin file to be sent to the EPROM programmer. For now, I filled the ROM to the brim with 256 SYSEXes picked up at random ;-) As said, the prototype seems to work very well ( though I didn't test every single patch....) If someone is interested in such a device, I can launch a batch at OSH Park for PCBs and send them once I've received them. I can also supply rightly programmed 27C801 EPROM, or even a complete kit with all the components ( a few indeed ). Let me know ! I attach to this message pictures of the card and the script I used ( in French, sorry....). Chris.

DX7s main board connectors? 7
I need to replace a mainboard connector (J13) on my DX7S. Looking at the service manual parts list, the connectors (J1 to J13) are not listed. They appear to be a JST or Molex type - does anyone know the vendor or part number? I measure 2.5 mm spacing on the pins - which are not square, but a flat blade type. If I can't locate a replacement, I could try a standard header (2.54mm spacing) connector. Thanks for reading! Mike

TX81Z LCD repair? 3
Can the TX81Z LCD be replaced? From the circuit schematic, it looks to be a standard 2x16 LCD. If anyone has done this, could they provide the specifics? i.e. vendor part number, website, etc. Thanks! Mike

DX7s main board connectors? [1 Attachment]
It's pretty unlikely that they are Molex as Yamaha would source locally or make their own. I also don't recognize the blade configuration. If you want to find the originals they will likely be from a Japanese manufacturer. For connectors with fewer than 10 pins you can sub a different connector type even if the pin spacing is not exact for 2.5mm vs. 2.54mm pin spacing. If the connectors are longer then the tolerances add up and this won't work. You would need to change the wire ends too which is a pain. A common and easy to use connector series is the Molex KK .1" (2.54mm). You can get them with a gold or tin plated finish. They are about the the easiest to crimp and insert. You can get them with keys and ramps which prevent misalignment and lock the connectors in place Here is a Digikey link https://www.digikey.com/products/en/connectors-interconnects/rectangular-connectors-headers-male-pins/314?k=molex+KK&k=&pkeyword=molex+KK&sv=0&pv1989=0&sf=0&FV=ffe0013a&quantity=&ColumnSort=0&page=1&pageSize=25 HTH, Dave daved@...

Making a Yamaha ADP1 ?? 3
Hey, I've seen in this mentioned in this topic chat: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/YamahaDX/conversations/topics/18948 has anyone gotten anywhere with making a DIY ADP1 ? I have a DX7S and I'm considering making makeshift one with a riser/donor card. It would be great to own an ADP1 as an example but of course they are rare/expensive. As I understand it there is no schematic available to detail the crossover between RAM1 and RAM4 ? which the adp1 achieves. Any info would be much appreciated? @aerobaticant ?

Dead DX7 Mark I - Repair questions -- Help! 25
Hi there – Seth here, writing to you from Boston. After 20 years of just letting my DX7 Mark I sit in its case (I purchased back in the ‘80s), for the longest time I've been thinking about bringing it back to life largely as a MIDI controller – as the keybed is just incredible despite the DX7's weight – which would be tough per gigging. I'm hoping to use it like a Hammond B3 as I think the edges weren’t so sharp per waterfall techniques. I’ve pored through older messages in the forum here, I wanted to hear what you all thought as to the best way to go about getting started before I go down the rabbit hole per repairs. As I’m currently very frustrated per repairs with my other dead gear of the similar vintage, I just don’t want to drive myself crazy here – but I also don’t want this to end up in a landfill either. It was my first keyboard and I miss it all these years later. Again, it’s a DX7 Mark I with E! Grey Matter installed. All the DX7 ROM cartridges were lost somewhere in storage and I can’t find them – despite repeated attempts to recover them. When I turn the DX7 on, I get 88 (or a different digit) that shows up, and dark blocks on the upper row of the LCD. I’m assuming that this means that the system isn’t booting? (Alternately – I’m concerned that this means the 9.4265 Mhz crystal may be dead…and I just learned that the company that made replacement crystals is out of business as of 2017!) So, I figured I’d (1) replace the battery (I’m good with soldering, so no problem there) using a fresh battery and an external CR2032 battery holder and then (2) try to check the connections with the E! and clean the contacts before reseating it. But I doubt these two things will fix it - but it's inexpensive enough to try. If that doesn’t work, I figured that next I’d remove E! and try to revert it to stock. But not having the original chips, I figured I’d ask to see if someone has the SER-7 ROM as a .bin file here that they'd be willing to email me; I’ve already ordered a EPROM burner for a totally separate repair so I could give that a go. (I figure that’s the best version EPROM to drop in there, especially per MIDI standards?) Also, if someone knows specifically what EPROM and RAM chip I should order and throw in there, that would be a help. But other than that, I’m out of ideas and I don’t have much money to throw at repairing this right now. Plus, again – I don’t have the DX7 ROM/RAM cartridges anymore, as they’re buried in storage – so I don’t know how I’d initialize the unit even if I could get it to boot - so that's another issue. Any thoughts or suggestions, I’m all ears. Thanks for your help! - Seth

DX7S or DX7II or DX7II/FD Power Supply 6
Hi, I just repaired my dead SPX90 power supply and have had my confidence boosted. :-) Now I am going to tackle my DX7S power supply which is in worse condition. I *think* I have most of the parts needed, but if the transformer is bad, then I'm out of luck. It's a special transformer for the switching supply. ANYWAY, ... has anyone dropped in a 3rd party supply?? If I fail to repair it, maybe there is an off the shelf +5v, +/-12v that will fit. Anyone done this?

What Are You Doing With Your Yamahas? (1st) 2
I've been quietly reading the posts from all you geniuses concerning your various Yahamas. Modifying them, upgrading them, repairing them, discovering new tricks with them, etc. It gradually made me wonder: Once you get your Yahamas fixed and working again, what are you actually doing with them? Besides playing them at your local gigs at taverns, bars, clubs, whenever you can find a place to play (hopefully for pay). Are any of you doing any recording? Original songs or or instrumental tunes. Cover versions of your favorite songs? Other audio experiments with them? If so, mightn’t it be fun for you guys to post (at least some of) your recorded work in audio form here on this site, so the rest of us can hear your talent? Just an idea I thot I'd float to see if any of you were interested, and if it was even technically feasible to do on this site. What are your thots on this idea? Catch ya later. Bye for now. I have not been around in a long time. 5
Dear Group. I am overwhelmed at the response to my inquiry and to amount of sound patches available to download. Its amazing. I am excited but I will start slowly. Only last week I attempted to download some photos from my cell phone to the computer and lost all the photos from both! I have always faithfully opened and looked at the the Emails I have received from the group over the years but the technology has long since passed me by. Therefore I could not not contribute . Sincerely, Fred

I have no been around in a long time. 3
Hi Everyone I got my Mint condition DX7s out of the fight case and fell in love with it again. I cant seem to find a the Grand piano and B3 patches that I got off of a Demo at Guitar center many moons ago. I would like to get some new cool patches. In the flight case was a song list of Elvis songs I did in Vegas back in the day . Ben Weisman, the man who wrote more songs recorded by Elvis than any other songwriter in history also played on this Dx7s keyboard. Can I download or , how do I get some new sounds into this old Gem ? Thanks " Chicago Fred"
