Trouble resetting Yamaha DX21

I received a TRS80 cassette cable today and I can’t reset the factory settings. I don’t know what I did wrong. I changed the battery, connected the MIDI in and out, and connected the cassette cable to my amplifier. I keep getting ERR. CASS.

Maybe you can find any hints in this thread? :

Or maybe you have connect MIDI in/out the wrong way?

What has your amplifier to to do with this? Your cassetteplayer is
connected to your DX21 to load settings. Your amp has nothing to do with
it?

It's long ago since I last used a cassette interface, with a DX100 that I
don't own anymore. And even then I hardly used it, because (re-)loading
voicebanks was much faster, easier, and more reliable using a computer,
MIDI interface and SysEx dump software.

The cassette cable should not connect to an amplifier. The connection is between DX21 cassette port (DIN) and cassette player/recorder 3.5mm plug (x2) and possibly 2.5mm plug (x1)

I believe the memory protection setting should be OFF - also.

Unless the backup dump is coming from MIDI rather than cassette, the MIDI cables are not involved.

I must’ve been following a blog. I thought there was something about how to factory reset in the manual which said the same as in the blog. Another possibility is that my cable may not be compatible.

According to the explanation of Test Mode in service manual, external amp (or cassette recorder in stopped recording mode) is used for testing the cassette interface. You don’t need to perform this test, there’s hardly any reason why cassette interface shouldn’t work. That test is rather strange, it needs to set well that gain of the external amp. Probably you didn’t do, so there’s error alert.

If you need only the reset, when you see Test entry on the display, just respond with No. That’s all.

Good luck.

I don't know if the TRS80 cassette cable is the same, but I think (correct
me if I am wrong) the Yamaha cable is the same as a cassette cables used
for MSX computers:

I believe I have used the same for CX5m,DX and CASIO.

There is blurb on the cassette lead and wiring diagram :
