New in this group and question
Hello all,
I am new in this group. I have a DX7II and recently bought a Wind
controller. I found a lot of useful information here, for which I thank you.
One question: I would love to find a copy of Sal Gallina’s book ‘Expressive
FM Applications’. I found a number of references to it in this group (&
YamahaDXfiles) and on the Yamaha Musicians forum, but all links to it seem to
have evaporated. I did find Sal's patches and audio examples already, but I would like to read the
explanations behind the programming, which are in the book.
And a paper copy is currently nowhere available (and often not affordable).
Does anyone have a suggestion for me how to get it?

开云体育Hi, Vindor, this is good address, unfortunately less and less used when I compare with traffic few years ago… That’s sad, but it can’t be revived probably. I’ve been using WX controllers since 1989, first WX7, later WX5, and last year I purchased also Akai EWI4000S which I wanted for long time. Still I’m searching the old EWI with analog expander. I have the paper original of that book, but still didn’t find time for scanning it. Few years ago I had an idea to scan and publish old Yamaha AfterTouch magazines, Supplemental Booklets for DX7 II, DX7S, QX3 and some other material to DX and Yamaha community. I could finish this project thanks to the cooperation with some members here who contributed originals as a gift, or sold it to me, and with the great help of our member Rawl Gelinas who also had some material and processed data after the scanning. You can find it on the internet. We still try to get the last two or three missing Supplemental Booklets. Maybe one day I will scan also Expressive FM Applications…? I suppose you could find music examples and SYX files on . ?Daniel Forro

Vindor,
I'd be interested to read it too, but as I understand it, it's quite a short book - more of a booklet, or pamphlet that accompanies the set of patches on the cassette - but people tend to ask a stupid amount of money for it, which I very much doubt it's worth. As far as I can tell, it's still under copyright, but not in print, which presumably explains why there are no scans of it shared publicly, and why no one tends to sell it at it's true value - which I guess would really not be very much, if it was still available new. It seems the publisher that still owns the rights is just sitting on it, and I don't suppose there would be enough volume of sales to interest any others in taking it over. At the moment, it seems the best you can do is hope someone lists it on ebay for a sensible price, or find it on Amazon, and click the "I want to read this on my Kindle" link - though I doubt there's much chance of them ever converting it. I think the gist of it is that some parameters can be controlled by Breath or Aftertouch, especially operator levels and LFO amount.? If you look at his patches with something like the TX81Z editor, or JSynthLib, you can see which ones he used. FWIW, I've tried his patches, and I thought some of the ones that come with the WT11 are better - especially after a bit of tweaking, mostly to reduce the amount of detune, which is a bit overdone in many of them. Martin Tarenskeen converted those to work on the TX81Z - mostly.? A few don't work because they're performance patches based on voice patches in the ROM, and it's not the same ROM.? A lot of of them work well though. - Andy |
