DX-7 hangs up on startup
Hi all,
I have two DX-7's, which both have the same exact problem. Upon turning them on, they both hang up while first loading, and get stuck with the "YAMAHA DX7 SYNTHESIZER" LCD readout and the red numeric readout: "88" both stuck on. They rarely proceed on to the fully loaded stage, where I can play the instrument. Because I have TWO DX-7s with the same problem, I'm assuming that this is a COMMON problem, but I have not found any mention of this ailment in the archives or online. My repair tech was clueless, when I described this problem to him. My power source is just fine, and stable, by the way. Help! If you'd respond directly to "dana@...", I'd appreciate it, as I rarely check this group. Best, ** Announcing a special concert of Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman at the NuMusic Festival in Stavanger, Norway on Sept. 7th, 2007. |
I know this is an old post, but I'm now experiencing this same problem. Any updates or ideas here? Thank you very much.

Hi here,
I'm new to this group, hence the late answer. I actually had a similar issue with a DX7: sometimes it booted up Ok, but most of the time, it hanged with cryptic glyphs on the LCD. To cut long (debug) story short, I monitored the timing between poweron and the /RESET signal (pin 6 on 63B03 = IC60) with an oscilloscope. Datasheet says on boot, it should stay low for 100 ms, but?in my case, it went high after 40 ms. The cause was the 10/16 tantalum close to the battery (in K2 on the schematic); I replaced it, and everything went OK. HTH, cheers Fran?ois |
