DX7 not reponding to any button

Hello,

I have a DX7 with some strange problem :
When i turn it on, it shows on display 27 and Memory protect cardridge on , but not button is reponding.
The keyboard works, and i can hear a saw-like sound when i play it , and it also transmits midi data.

I have moved the cables, shaked the case, etc, for a bad connection, but.......nothing.

Any ideeas ?

Thanks.

Try to internal diagnostics for the DX7. The procedure is to hold down the function key and then press keys 16 and 32 simultaneously.

I have allready tryed to do this, but the buttons are not working.
I have checked with a multimeter, and the buttons seem to make contact.

Does it show voice #27? Looks like button #27 is stuck pressed down (like if you were with with your finger pressing it down). This would prevent any other button from working. I would suggest you to check the panel switches.

My thought.

It shows someting like "27" (i believe some digits are not working), but on the screen it shows "Memory protect cardridge on". I have checked the button, but it is not stucked, it works ok. No ideea what could be wrong. I have also checked the connections between the buttons pannel and mainboard, and they seemed to be allright.

I don't know whether the firmware of the DX works without the panel buttons, but it might be worth a try to boot WITHOUT a connection between the panel and the mainboard.

If it starts fine without the panel, you know that the panel pcb is somehow corrupted.

I have started the dx without the connections between the buttons and the moterboard. It's the same, the problem remains. So the buttons panels are ok. Im means that it can be a firmware problem ?

Hello!

I'm curious if this problem was ever solved. I picked up a DX-7 today which I got for free and it has a similar problem. When powered on, it says 88. Memory Protect Cartridge On. It's stuck and none of the buttons work.

Thanks.

Hi,

Do you have a card ? I don't have one inserted, so somebody sugested that I should get one , insert it and play with the protect switch.
You can try this, maybe it will work, I have no access to a card.
For the moment I am just waiting for a technician to be available, more news after 25th of September.

Fixed! Had to replace IC 14, IC 20, and IC 21 Chips. Works great now.

Thanks for the follow-up. For those interested, IC14 is the ROM, while IC20 & IC21 are Static RAM chips.

Hi Jim,

when you say "had to replace ICs" you mean pull them out and put them back in their "stands" ?

Or did you changed them by other, tell me if I'm wrong but does this means to re-program them ? (talking about ROM)

I have this message too, and have a first gen one, so I've a IC15 too...

Thanks in advance
