FT-847 and Winlink

Steven KC3DOW

Hello,
I am having a problem originating a message.
Before I waste anyone's I would like to ask the following question of the group before proceeding.

Is there anyone who has successfully installed and can run WinLink psp? and Gateway messages without using CAT using a Yaesu FT-847?

Thank You,
Steven/kc3dow

Hi Steven,

Yeah, I'm not sure what the designers of the 847 were thinking when it came to digital operation.? It appears that they tried to have the transmit audio path follow the source of PTT (seems logical), so the two different connectors on the back (HF, VHF) need to be keyed on their respective jacks.? The audio from the other sources is severely muted.? The problem is that when the rig is keyed with CAT, both of the back jacks are muted.? I guess they figured (somehow) that CAT would be used with the hand mike?? Odd.

The back jacks also use different keying methods.? The HF TRS port overloads the Tx audio line (commonly used to key an HT), while the VHF DIN port has a separate PTT pin.

I was able to use CAT with the 847 a few years ago by using a high level audio source to override the muting, but that didn't seem to be a good idea long term.? The 847 does not have VOX, so your choices are to either use an interface box such as the Signalink, or configure things to use a serial port modem line.? Right now I'm using a Raspberry Pi, where, the easiest method is to use Direwolf TNC and a GPIO pin to drive a transistor buffer for PTT, but not all digital mode software understands the Pi's GPIO structure, and not all modes have Pi-compatible versions.

With that intro, here's what I do.? It should be adaptable to other platforms.? I have a cable rigged up to use a modem line (DTR) from an FTDI USB serial adapter board to drive the PTT line.? The module has TTL outputs, so can drive an old TTL inverter chip (7404) to get the logic sense correct, then to a 2N2222 (as an open collector buffer) through a resistor.? The transistor's collector then tugs on the PTT line.? For VHF I use Direwolf as the sound card TNC, , but anything that can be configured to use DTR for keying should work.

In order to enable the rig for both HF and VHF modes (i.e. both of the jacks on the back of the rig), I wired up a cable that connects the audio line on the HF (TRS) port, through an in-line capacitor to the VHF (DIN) port so that the VHF port doesn't key the HF port.? Switches either route the transistor's PTT output through a 2k resistor to the audio line (for HF), or to a separate wire to the VHF PTT line to the DIN port.? Very confusing to wire up, and prone to operator failure in use, but once the switches are set right it seems robust enough.? If you don't need the HF modes, you can skip the switches and DC-blocking cap, and go direct to the VHF DIN port.

Or just buy a Signalink interface...

Good luck!

not exactly the same question??
but I run the TRS connection as my only audio in/out and key line
for HF/VHF/UHF, lots of FT8 during the VHF/UHF contests?
I also run a USB serial thingy and let it trip a small relay which pulls down the PTT line via that 2k resistor or whatever is needed
I run a modded USB sound card (I removed the resistor that puts the DC on the mic line)
never had any trouble, even though it is not supposed to work for VHF/UHF ( I didnt know it wasnt supposed to work when I got my first 847)?
and my second one works the same way

am I confused ?
