This site exists for the exchange of ideas, advice, technical and general information for the Yaesu Transceiver known as the FT-847. Manufactured from 1998-2005, the Yaesu FT-847 was and is a HF/VHF/UHF all-mode transceiver with DSP originally sold by Yaesu as an "Earth Station". It provides all mode HF / VHF and UHF communications. it also offers outstanding full-duplex operation for satellite operation with synchronous Doppler tracking. Members of this group are generally owners, past owners and current users of this excellent 20+ year old amateur radio transceiver.

Hi, I have an FT-847 that appears to have no TX or RX on any band or mode, but it transmits at much less than a watt. When I put an antenna on it, I could hear myself very low on another radio in my shack. Likewise, when I transmitted with the other radio, I could hear myself on the FT-847, but very low. Any suggestions on what could be wrong?
etantennas@... (2191E NP4ET)Sun, 06 Apr 2025 15:23:58 -0700Re: Early model CAT question

It probably depends on what software (and what version of it) you're
using to drive the radio.聽 If you're using rigctl, there's a
separate radio model for the bi-directional and uni-directional
versions:

$ rigctl -l | grep 847

So, the answer to your question is "yes".聽 Just don't expect to be
able to grab the VFO knob while tracking to make adjustments, since
the software will probably override it on the next real time update.

One of my buddies is selling his 847, but it's one of the unidirectional models. Will I still be able to take advantage of doppler tracking and digital modes with it? Or do either of these require bi-directional CAT control? I'm not too pressed about seeing the frequency on the screen, just about it actually controlling the radio. Needless to say I've been spoiled with USB CAT control with my 7300 for some time now.
ke8hbl@... (Dom The Dorit)Thu, 03 Apr 2025 21:07:58 -0700Re: I want to use a tuner for my ft847!

Thanks Spence. That was absolutely great of you to spend your time explaining that you have come up with similar logic I was thinking, so everything should be okay as you say 鈥渋t has the same socket 鈥 and it is designed for the Yaesu Radio. So why shouldn鈥檛
it work fingers crossed?
