Untunable SSB, CW. but AM is OK 9
By fiddling with the I.F. width control I can "almost" resolve speeech on SSB but clearly something is wrong, with my money on a drifted oscillator. I did check the Master Oscillator (30 MHz) and this was slightly low so I corrected this. I then checked the tripler output for 90MHz and it wasn't there - but 30 MHz was! I thought maybe the 30MHz was bleeding through a weak 90 MHz but cant check this at the mo. as my 100MHz scope has packed up. I read Mat's description of his similar fault and cure but was not sure of the location/part number of the trimmer cap he mentioned and ultimately replaced. I did locate the transformer he replaced but I havn't check mine yet. So my question is (mainly for Mat?) "Can you state where I can find that variable cap you replaced? You mention "two tin cans" and I wondered if this was in the VCO enclosure (how do you get the lid off?!!) or is it on the VFO board. Can't quite place you photo. Kind regards Peter G0LQU

FTV901R Transverter mod for FT980 3
hi guys, I have bought this transverter to use with my FT980 and I have seen mention in this group that there is a mod that can be done to it to make it work with the FT980 but my enquiries qith Yaesu UK have proved unsuccessful. They no longer offer this mod and have no knowledge of the details of it. They assure me that there is nothing either on paper or digitally to help them reproduce the mod. So I am now asking the assembled brains here if anyone might know what the mod involves and if so, please pass this information on to me if you are able. In addition to this I will need to buy or make the necessary cable to connect the two units so the TX/RX switching operates properly, so any help with that would be appreciated. Thanks for looking and I hope to hear from you soon. Regards Alan G1BDU

Frequency Error 4
I am curious if there is an adjustment to correct the issue described below. In CW or AM, according to my frequency counter, my carrier is the same frequency as the frequency display. However, in USB and LSB I must tune my FT-980 to 80 cycles higher than the frequency of a station I am talking to in order for said station to sound right and in order for me to sound right to someone who knows my voice. This is on any amateur band. Thanks in advance for any advice you can render. WA5UEK

Replacement trimmer for TC4001 (PLL/VCO Unit) 5
Anyone know where to source these parts in both the correct capacitance range and temperature coefficient? Over Christmas break I repaired several PLL/VCO Units whose OEM trimmers had become intermittent. After initial adjustment, my 20-40-75M '980 has primarily been used on 40-75 (LSB) and when I went to USB last night the VCO wouldn't lock. No amount of adjustment will bring the oscillator into lock range for USB/CW, although LSB works fine. This leads me to believe that the part has drifted in value and/or is of the wrong temperature coefficient for this use. FWIW, the replacements were obtained from Surplus Sales and look to be a high-quality component. 73 - Fred, N8YX

FRB-1 relay problems 5
Gang, I use the FRB-1 relay box to key my amp. I recently redid the cable to the amp at the FRB-1. It keys the amp but for some reason I transmit once and the amp does not fully bring the receiver back. Just switching off the transmit switch on the amp brings back the receive. I have the shield to the common on the relay box and the center wire to the terminal rx as it was before. Any ideas on the problem? I have 3 FRB-1 boxes. 73 Dave K4JRB

Yaesu FIF-232 Available at Cost 5
I picked up a Yaesu FIF-232 at a local hamfest for $10. It comes with the box and instructions, but not the adapter cable (you'll need to supply your own). I purchased it up thinking someone in the group can use it. This is the RS-232 CAT Interface adapter for the FT-980. Just add an RS-232 to USB converter and plug it into your PC. You can buy cheap CAT cables on eBay ... so why use a FIF-232? 1. It matches our rig (paint color and everything) 2. It is opto-coupled and galvanically isolated (reduces PC noise coupling into your rig or antenna system). The eBay cables are not. 3. It has an on-board regulator AND serial converter to provide the correct voltages to both sides (+/-12V for the PC, 5V for the FT-980) instead of relying on blocking diodes and ballast resistors. It is yours for the same $10 plus shipping cost. First come first serve ... -- -Mat Breton, N8TW

A rather Tatty Beginning 10
I have just picked up a Rather Tatty and quite heavily abused Yaesu FT-980 that has not been cared for at all by the look of it, I will upload photos soon, but was after a little advice. The unit was once owned by one of the top BBC engineers of his time, and I’m sure it’s been heavily played with. I know that when Yaesu released this radio it was in that period that I call “Yaesu’s Lost Years’”, yes they released some good radios, such as this model and the obvious FT-ONE, but I personally think that they hit a wall with regards to quality, if you look at the gear that went before even taking into account the FT-101 Series, they really did produce some very good kit, and say 5-10 years after the FT-980, they seem to start using quality parts again, but in between this and when the FT-980 and ONE were released switches and plastic bit seemed tacky and cheap, maybe it’s just me, but I was always steered away from restoring these models due to quality of parts. Anyway, what I’m after here is some advise as to if there is anything that I should check before I apply power to the unit? Are there any good restoration guides available for the FT-980? Thanks in advance for any advice offered. Kind Regards James www.Md0mdi.I’m

Added album MD0MDI's Yaesu FT-980 #photo-notice
James Sawle (MD0MDI) <james@...> added the album MD0MDI's Yaesu FT-980: This is a very Sad looking FT-980 which has maybe had too much attention over it's hard life and is going to take quite a bit of work to get her looking pretty again.

Unusual behavior 3
Yesterday I was in a 40 meter QSO and we needed to move up in frequency a bit. I noticed when I turned the VFO clockwise the displayed frequency decreased and, conversely, when I turned the dial counter-clockwise the displayed frequency increased. I don’t if the operating frequency did the same. I changed to several different bands and it behaved the same so I shut it off and went to my backup rig, a B&W 5100B. When my QSO ended I turned the FT-980 on again and all was normal. This transceiver has never had a thing done to it except battery replacement and that was years ago. I’m an experienced electrical engineer and technician so I am not afraid to delve into it but was curious if anyone observed this behavior before and, if so, what was the cause? I figure a loose or dirty connection is likely. Also, what’s a good source for the panel lamps? The one in the S meter is out. Thank you, Brian Harris WA5UEK

NO RX on my new to me FT-980 23
Hi all 1st of all thanks for any support you may give to get this beautiful radio to RX...it does TX on CW at least haven't tried SSB 1.started by putting fresh 2x AA batteries in the memory backup...they were not installed so no corrosion issues. 2. I reviewed the Basic operation manual for initial settings and confirmed the power up sequence ...goes to GEN 7.000 I hear a speaker pop telling me its getting a DC level at PWR up. Turned up the AF control and nothing not a peep! NOTE: being a skeptic i wonder could the external RX ANT switch be faulty?? so should I contact(DeoxIT) clean it? 3.tried the BFO CVC cap adjustment ....set to 6V USB IF shift set CCW ; but when I went to LSB the DC meter only goes to 5V not down to 3-4 VDC the manual says when I move the IF shift CW next steps check the TX/RX relay?......where is it? in the back cage I imagine. or something else could be the problem? Did DR. Jose Carlos find his RX issue?? 73 David VE3DPC

Assorted '980 ramblings and repairs 16
Figured I'd tickle the list a bit to keep it active. Pulled one of two FT-980s currently inline out of line in preparation for replacement of TC4001 and all the electrolytics on that particular assembly. The other I'm using for my FT8 position - which works great under computer control but after warmup, the main tuning encoder won't change operating frequency when tuned downward. I have a game plan for both of these. The third '980 I own - in the queue for some time now - needs some updates (filters, the Gen TX kit installed) and will become a backup to the other two when done. #4 needs its front panel replaced and ultimately will become a guinea pig for other mods I have planned...including deciphering the Aux Band ROM programming. A TS-930S replaced the first '980. An FL-7000 was connected to the Yaesu and I'll cable the Kenwood up to it as soon as the amp cable I ordered arrives. (Would usually build this stuff but Ye Olde Junque Box is fresh out of 7 pin DIN males.) It's nice to let the rig control the amp for band and tuner changes but I guess I'll live with manual operation for the time being. The '930 was modded pretty extensively a few years ago and I'm pleasantly surprised how well it works on the crowded low bands. Alas, its internal tuner is less than optimal for rapid QSY - which is why an FT-980/FC-757AT replaced it for FT8 duties. Hopefully, the G0 with a '980 problem (on a QRZ thread) shows up here and we can all assist with keeping another one on the air. 73 all - Fred, N8YX

Replacement rear (fan) panel for PSU/PA heat sink 3
All, I'd indicated in a repair/mod thread last week that I was going to design a mounting plate for an auxiliary cooling fan setup. After a lot of studying and contemplation this afternoon I decided to re-design the entire rear panel for mounting two additional 60mm computer fans over the PSU area. The original PA heat sink fan opening has been given a different look as well. Original panel mounting hole locations were used. The new panel won't quite be "plug and play" owing to the fact that the holes for the fan screws and 4 of 6 plate mounting holes (center and rightmost two, looking at the rear of the radio) must be countersunk in order for things to fit nice and flush. Plan is to use M4 flat head screws for the fan mounts; these will be captively retained by thin M4 nuts and the fans will slide onto them. I managed to locate a gasket/spacer for a 60mm fan which should allow proper sealing and spacing over the captive nuts. I -may- get lucky and not have to countersink the 4 plate mounting screws with this arrangement but at least there are fall-back options. This evening I sat down at the CAD terminal and whipped out a design, then played around with the various online laser cutters to see what kind of prices they'd charge. SendCutSend came in at around $20 for single-quantity 1/8" 6061-T6, with the next available lot size at 5pcs. You'll need to finish the panel after machining is complete; I'd recommend powder coating if you have a shop nearby. You'll also need to source slightly longer mounting screws for the plate. If there's any interest in this effort, I'll upload the DXF to the Files area. I'll get a sample part cut then spec the rest of the hardware and post a list of sources along with an assembly guide. 73 - Fred, N8YX

4.5v for battery backup? 4
In a recent shipment of parts, I got the memory battery trap door from an FT-980. On it was attached a 3-cell "AA" holder. The OEM unit was a 2-cell (3v). Looking at the CPU Unit's RAM (uPD445LC) device specs, I see a max VCC of 7.0v. There are blocking diodes in series with both the 5v supply to the chip and from the battery bank to it, so the max applied voltage looks to be around 4.5v...and around 3.9v when the battery backup is supplying power. Well within safety limits. Consensus on switching to a 3-cell arrangement? If will definitely give longer backup life. 73 - Fred, N8YX

Wanted - Inrad #108 filter switch board, filters
It's a long shot, I know... but does anyone on the list have one or more of these they want to part with? This is the unit which Inrad marketed for the FT-920. I'd like to fit three of my four '980s with the boards; I have the required filters. The other radio will stay "wide" for FT8 use. Also looking for an XF-8.9GA, or the Inrad/Seiwa/Fox Tango equivalent 6KHz B/W filter. Thanks - 73 Fred, N8YX

Title change: Receiver notes
(Splitting out from the "File uploaded..." header) "One thing I found in all the FT-980's I found (5) is the S meter is very scotch. I hate giving a strong signal that only reaches S5 or 6 when I get a 5/9. So raise t5he S meter slightly. I have an older IC-740 I use that is too generous as a standard and usually split the difference." Dave and all, Agreed WRT S-meter. This is a function of meter amp circuit linearity and could probably be addressed by a re-design of said circuit. I spent a bit of time at the bench over Christmas break with 3 of 4 FT-980s and a service monitor w/ calibrated RF generator. Best I can do with the three is S-8 indicated @ 50uV applied, S-9 @ 100uV applied and 40/S-9 @ 10,000uV applied; this at 14MHz. A/B tests with my TS-930S on the same antenna show the '980 tracks within an S unit everywhere; usually they're right on the mark at anything above S-8. FWIW, I can turn the generator to its lowest setting (< .01uV) and the FT-980s still hear it. Another "challenging" S meter setup lies within the NRD-515. Above S-7, those meter circuits and meters track EXACTLY for a 6 or 10dB increase or reduction in applied signal; below that it's Forrest Gump's box of chocolates. Rob Sherwood and I have gone back and forth about the subject at length, and some of that discussion may make its way onto a JRC reflector at some point. In regards to: "Chip K7JA told me at Dayton in 1994 that the 980 had the best receiver of any Yaesu. You just had to ignore the phase noise which I never found a problem. 73 Dave K4JRB" I played around with my 40/75M '980 last night for a bit on the low end of 40. Lots of CW out and about to allow one test the various filtering functions. There was someone whose keyer was stuck on "dah", either intentionally or not. Less than 100Hz away was an S-4 DX signal. 600Hz filter engaged, notch on the offender, APF used to peak the desired signal. I heard an absolutely pure, perfectly readable tone with no hints of interference or modulation from the nearby neighbor - or from anyone or anything else on the band for that matter. Granted, on SSB these rigs could probably benefit from a cascaded filter arrangement (as some of my others employ) but they're great on CW and FSK in terms of interference suppression. A question for the group at large: Does anyone notice "phase noise" with these rigs, and if so under what conditions? 73 - Fred, N8YX

FT-980 CW Filters and Notes ON GEN TX 5
Chip K7JA told me that for best CW use the 600HZ filter and notch/audio filter for best results. Chip is a top notch CW Op and was VP of Yaesu NA at the time. He told me to stay away from the Yaesu GEN Mod. K4DPK made one work on GEN TX but he told me years later it was cut and try to get GEN TX, I made a booklet of the FOX Tango newsletter ft-980 mods in the 1983 and 1984 mods. I gave Wald N4PL a copy. The 980 on my main operating table hears well on 10. 73 Dave K4JRB
