Is this a factory mod?

Hi Gang,

I am repairing an FT-980 for a friend of mine.? His radio has a relatively high serial number:?3D 010641

I see a multitude of problems with this radio and I wanted to eliminate some "customization" done by the previous owner(s).? I see a strange relay nicely tucked at the back of the ACC-1 connector.? None of my radios, with lower SN, has such relay.? Please see attached photo.? The relay is marked by a dotted line box.?

Could someone confirm if this is a factory mod or should I dig around it?

Thank for reading this and 73,
Wald N4PL

Hi Wald,
I did a search of the Fox Tango FT-980 newsletters and found pages 8348, 8349 and 8352 about keying a Heath linear. Does this seem to be the relay mod? If it is the mod it is a Yaesu approved mod that you had to do yourself with parts supplied by Yaesu.

Suggest searching the Newsletter pdf in the files section when you start checking out the other mods.

Hi Roger,

Thank you so much!? Message on page 8352 (document page 55) describes what I am seeing in this radio.? Now I am at peace with this part and may move on to other areas.

I had to do this with my Henry linear, but I used an external relay box (and used a "solid-state" relay to minimize noise/maximize life, switch faster). Unfortunately can attest that if you don't do this, you can possibly damage the master "T/R" relay on the REG board that controls which changes all the circuitry inside the rig between the two signal paths.

Roger,

How do I get to the files section?

Thanks Roger and Wald.? My original FT-980 was purchased in 1983.? I bought a used 980 from K4DPK who modified it for GEN TX which I used the memories for those 60 meter channels.? My next two were given me by the family of a silent key.? THe one with a relay added is with Wald N4PL.

Back in the early 1990's there was a group of 980 users and I copied the pages of the FOX Tango newsletter with? 980 improvements.? I made 15 copies and last year I only had 2 copies left.? Chip K7JA and I talked at Dayton 1n 1994 and he told me the 980 had the best receiver they ever made (he was VP of Yaesu USA.? Good to see the ole gal now has a reflector.? They made about 600 of the FT-980.?

I've seen two other FT-980 for sale in person: one was at Dayton, and another at Findlay.

Only 600 made (I assume for US market)? I maybe should have bought another one!?

Mat,

Maybe only for USA I know many were sold in JA for their 10 watt rig.? K7JA then at Yaesu sent me the 10 amp board which I used once and sent back replacing it with my 100 amp board.? I also know many were sold in the UK as this is were a lot of boards on EBAY come from.

I currently have four FT-980s plus about half of another in parts. It's my favorite rig, and I've owned a LOT of various models of gear over the years.

The solution to the linear problem comes in the form of an FL-7000. I have one station thusly configured and another '7000 awaiting installation when I redo my shack.

3D 010641 is not a late model, it is number 0641 of the 01 series. One of the first radios produced. The 3D refers to dates. It is in the service manual.
